THIS book, which is intended principally for the large and increasing class of readers who wish to learn something of the masterpieces of Greek literature, and who cannot easily read them in Greek, was originally published by Messrs. Macmillan in a different form. Since its first appearance it has been revised and corrected throughout, and largely re- written. The chief part of the Introduction is new. It is not intended to be a general essay on Socrates, but only an attempt to explain and illustrate such points in his life and teaching as are referred to in these dialogues, which, taken by themselves, con- tain Plato's description of his great master's life, and work, and death. The books which were most useful to me in writing it are Professor Zeller's Socrates and the Socratic Schools, and the edition of the VI PREFACE. Apology by the late Rev. James Riddell, published after his death by the delegates of the Clarendon Press. His account of Socrates is singularly striking. -

Josiah Ober Chapter 2 of The Greeks and the Rational (book-in-progress, provisional title) Draft of 2019.09.20 Word count: 17,200. Abstract: The long Greek tradition of political thought understood that cooperation among multiple individuals was an imperative for human survival. The tradition (here represented by passages from Plato’s Republic, Gorgias, and Protagoras, and from Diodorus of Sicily’s universal history) also recognized social cooperation as a problem in need of a solution in light of instrumental rationality and self-interest, strategic behavior, and the option of free riding on the cooperation of others. Ancient “anthropological” theories of the origins of human cooperation proposed solutions to the problem of cooperation by varying the assumed motivations of agents and postulating repeated interactions with communication and learning. The ways that Greek writers conceived the origins of social order as a problem of rational cooperation can be modeled as strategic games: as variants of the non-cooperative Prisoners Dilemma and cooperative Stag Hunt games and as repeated games with incomplete information and updating. In book 2 of the Republic Plato’s Glaucon offered a carefully crafted philosophical challenge, in the form of a narrative thought experiment, to Socrates’ position that justice is supremely choice-worthy, the top-ranked preference of a truly rational person. Seeking to improve the immoralist argument urged by Thrasymachus in Republic book 1 (in order to give Socrates the opportunity to refute the best form of that argument), Glaucon told a tale of Gyges and his ring of invisibility.1 In chapter 1, I suggested that Glaucon’s story illustrated a pure form of rational and self-interested behavior, through revealed preferences when the ordinary constraints of uncertainty, enforceable social conventions, and others’ strategic choices were absent. -

~tKatO<J"UVll and 'Qc.nem,c; at Protagoras 330-1 David Wol£sdorf I Introduction and Review In an argument in Protagoras for the similarity of Ol1WlO(j'\JVTj and oCH6'tTj~ Socrates introduces the following set of propositions: 1 (1) OtKalO(j'\JVT] is OtKlXlOV. 2 (2) oCH6'tTj~ is OCHOV. 3 (3) OtKlX lO(j'\JVTj is ocrWV. 4 (4) oCH6'tT]~ is otKawv. iI , I The meanings of (1)-(4) remain controversial. The objective of this paper is to give an update on the state of the discussion and to offer my own interpretation. The words 'OtKlXtOOUVTj' and 'OtKlXtoV' are typically translated as 'jus- tice' and 'just'. Thus, (1) is rendered as 'Justice is just'. The words '6CH6'tT1~' and 'ocrtoV' are typically translated as 'piety' or 'holiness' and 'pious' or 'holy'. But 'piety' and 'holiness' are not synonyms. This led to a crisis in 339 B.C. In order to understand Socrates’ and the Athenian community’s actions (as reported by Plato and Xenophon) it is necessary to understand the historical and legal contexts, the democratic state’s commitment to the notion that citizens are resonsible for the effects of their actions, and Socrates’ reasons for preferring to live in Athens rather than in states that might (by his lights) have had substantively better legal systems. AN INVENTION BY PLATO* The historieal character of the oracle's reply to Chaerephon's question as to whether any man was wiser than Socrates has been generally accepted by modern Socratic historiography. The historie authenticity of the Delphic pronouncement was not questioned by Schleiermacher, Hegel and Zeller and has since been confirmed by a long tradition of Socratic studies. By contrast, the perplexity, silence or denial of a few scholars seem little more than rare, paradoxical exceptions. «To invent the deposition of a witness at a recent tria!», wrote Gomperz, «and except by this fabrication to make contemporaries and posterity believe in an event ofthe utmost importance: who would wish to attribute to Plato such a purpose which is as stupid as it is dishonest ?» The Delphic answer, which by almost unanimous agreement has been accepted as evidence of an historical event, has therefore become «one of the most important documents on the philosophy and destiny of Socrates» and its historieal character appeared to guarantee the authenticity of Plato's Apology as a Socratic document. -

In this essay I examine Plato’s articulation of these problems in the Gorgias and the Republic. Through detailed analyses of Socrates’ exchanges with several interlocutors, I establish, first, that despite some real and apparent differences, all the interlocutors share the same fundamental conception of justice, which could be called justice as fairness or reciprocal equality (to ison). The core of justice lies in refraining from pleonexia (seeking to benefit oneself at the expense of another). Second, according to this view, the practice of justice is not intrinsically profitable; it is valuable only as a means to the acquisition or enjoyment of other, material goods. This conception thus implies that committing successful injustice is often more profitable than being just. -

Did Socrates Think Philosophy (Ethics) is Impossible?1 In Plato’s early dialogues, Socrates produces arguments that throw doubt upon the prospects for success in philosophical ethics. In the Apology, Socrates tells us he had become convinced that ethical knowledge is not possible for human beings. He says such knowledge is ‘property of the gods’. Human wisdom, is by comparison, worth very little, or nothing at all. He found that it is not possible to analyze or define moral terms such as ‘good’, or ‘just’. Because of this inability, a science of the good (wisdom) is not possible. The practitioners of this alleged science are not able to verbalize the desiderata or goals of the science, except in the most general and question-begging ways. This is in marked contrast to other sciences, such as medicine, and military science. Paradoxically, Socrates did believe in the benefits of philosophical investigation. We may not acquire any positive knowledge via philosophy (beyond the knowledge of our own ignorance); nevertheless, the best life must include dialectical examination of ethical concepts, and discussions concerning the good. Why does he hold this apparently conflicted view? The answer is complex. On the one hand, Socrates believed that we have an ability to detect goodness, even if we cannot fully define it or understand it. Goodness does exist. Nihilism, the view that there are no objective moral values, is not necessarily connected with ethical skepticism, the view that definition or analysis of moral terms is not possible. Critical reasoning allows us to find the good people and acts, and more reliably find the frauds, bad people or acts. -
