Refuting Polus in Four Stages First Paradox. Rhetors are the least powerful members of society. (466b–468e) 1.1 Power is a good thing (agathon) for its possessor. 1.2 Rhetoric lacks logos (465a), and hence its aim cannot be our welfare (i.e. what is best for us: to beltiston). 1.3 Rhetors do not know what is best for them. 1.4 Rhetors only do what seems best for them. (This follows on from the flattery discussion; see table above.) 1.5 There is a difference between doing what one wants and doing what seems best (for one to do). (For those who know, these two things coincide—this is real power.) 1.6 Things are either good (agathon), bad (kakon), or indifferent (metaxu [= in between], adiaphora). We avoid what is bad, choose or seek what is good, and use indifferents as a means for good. 1.7 Everyone does things in pursuit of good. 1.8 We want (boulesthai) good things because they are in our interest (ōphelima). Only the good is best for us. 1.9 Actions that produce harm do not reflect one’s will: agents only do what seems best or beneficial, but they do not want these actions. -

Josiah Ober Chapter 2 of The Greeks and the Rational (book-in-progress, provisional title) Draft of 2019.09.20 Word count: 17,200. Abstract: The long Greek tradition of political thought understood that cooperation among multiple individuals was an imperative for human survival. The tradition (here represented by passages from Plato’s Republic, Gorgias, and Protagoras, and from Diodorus of Sicily’s universal history) also recognized social cooperation as a problem in need of a solution in light of instrumental rationality and self-interest, strategic behavior, and the option of free riding on the cooperation of others. Ancient “anthropological” theories of the origins of human cooperation proposed solutions to the problem of cooperation by varying the assumed motivations of agents and postulating repeated interactions with communication and learning. The ways that Greek writers conceived the origins of social order as a problem of rational cooperation can be modeled as strategic games: as variants of the non-cooperative Prisoners Dilemma and cooperative Stag Hunt games and as repeated games with incomplete information and updating. In book 2 of the Republic Plato’s Glaucon offered a carefully crafted philosophical challenge, in the form of a narrative thought experiment, to Socrates’ position that justice is supremely choice-worthy, the top-ranked preference of a truly rational person. Seeking to improve the immoralist argument urged by Thrasymachus in Republic book 1 (in order to give Socrates the opportunity to refute the best form of that argument), Glaucon told a tale of Gyges and his ring of invisibility.1 In chapter 1, I suggested that Glaucon’s story illustrated a pure form of rational and self-interested behavior, through revealed preferences when the ordinary constraints of uncertainty, enforceable social conventions, and others’ strategic choices were absent. -

Anselm’s Cur Deus Homo: A Meditation from the Point of View of the Sinner Gene Fendt Elements in Anselm's Cur Deus Homo point quite differently from the usual view of it as the locus classicus for a theory of Incarnation and Atonement which exhibits Christ as providing the substitutive revenging satisfaction for the infinite dishonor God suffers at the sin of Adam. This meditation will attempt to bring out how the rhetorical ergon of the work upon faith and conscience drives the sinner to see the necessity of the marriage of human with divine natures offered in Christ and how that marriage raises both man and creation out of sin and its defects. This explanation should exhibit both to believers, who seek to understand, and to unbelievers (primarily Jews and Muslims), from a common root, a solution "intelligible to all, and appealing because of its utility and the beauty of its reasoning" (1.1). Anselm’s Cur Deus Homo is the locus classicus for a theory of Incarnation and Atonement which exhibits Christ as providing the substitutive revenging satisfaction for the infinite dishonor God suffers at the sin of Adam (and company).1 There are elements in it, however, which seem to point quite differently from such a view. This meditation will attempt to bring further into the open how the rhetorical ergon of the work upon “faith and conscience”2 shows something new in this Paschal event, which cannot be well accommodated to the view which makes Christ a scapegoat killed for our sin.3 This ergon upon the conscience I take—in what I trust is a most suitably monastic fashion—to be more important than the theoretical theological shell which Anselm’s discussion with Boso more famously leaves behind. -

EPISTEMIC CIRCULARITY: MALIGNANT AND BENIGN Michael Bergmann Consider the following dialogue: Juror #1: You know that witness named Hank? I have doubts about his trustworthiness. Juror #2: Well perhaps this will help you. Yesterday I overheard Hank claiming to be a trustworthy witness. Juror #1: So Hank claimed to be trustworthy did he? Well, that settles it then. I’m now convinced that Hank is trustworthy. Is the belief of Juror #1 that Hank is a trustworthy witness justified? Most of us would be inclined to say it isn’t. Juror #1 begins by having some doubts about Hank’s trustworthiness, and then he comes to believe that Hank is trustworthy. The problem is that he arrives at this belief on the basis of Hank’s own testimony. That isn’t reasonable. You can’t sensibly come to trust a doubted witness on the basis of that very witness’s testimony on his own behalf.1 Now consider the following soliloquy: Doubter: I have some doubts about the trustworthiness of my senses. After all, for all I know, they are deceiving me. Let’s see ... Hey, wait a minute. They are trustworthy! I recall many occasions in the past when I was inclined to hold certain perceptual beliefs. On each of those occasions, the beliefs I formed were true. I know that because the people I was with confirmed to me that they were true. By inductive reasoning, I can safely conclude from those past cases that my senses are trustworthy. There we go. It feels good to have those doubts about my senses behind me. -

In this essay I examine Plato’s articulation of these problems in the Gorgias and the Republic. Through detailed analyses of Socrates’ exchanges with several interlocutors, I establish, first, that despite some real and apparent differences, all the interlocutors share the same fundamental conception of justice, which could be called justice as fairness or reciprocal equality (to ison). The core of justice lies in refraining from pleonexia (seeking to benefit oneself at the expense of another). Second, according to this view, the practice of justice is not intrinsically profitable; it is valuable only as a means to the acquisition or enjoyment of other, material goods. This conception thus implies that committing successful injustice is often more profitable than being just. -

Kibel Excerpts from David Hume=s Dialogues concerning Natural Religion ANatural Religion@ was a phrase appropriated to the notion of religious knowledge that did not depend upon a Revelation by GodCthe sort of religious doctrine that human beings could reason out for themselves without divine assistance. One assumption of Christianity had been that humanity was either too weak or too corrupt in mind (or both) to think clearly about religious fundamentals and that God in his mercy had revealed these fundamentals in the form of holy scriptures, whose interpretation conveyed doctrine about the nature of deity. Since the sixteenth century, however, the idea grew steadily that mankind could infer certain features of God=s existence by use of unaided reason in the study of the natural universe and its laws; this idea (associated with the view that God was immanent in the created world) was designated Atheism@ in the eighteenth-century. Closely allied with theism was the view of deism, which held that reason could establish the existence of God, quite apart from knowledge of his characteristics; this idea sometimes carried with it the notion that the fact of his existence was all we could know about him without divine revelation. Hume=s dialogue was composed in the decade before 1651 but was not published until after his death, in 1779, and the belief of most scholars is that he thought the doctrines it espoused were too radical to be exposed to the general public during his lifetime. -

ΠΛΑΤΩΝ | Plato: Four Dialogues Handout 8 A Map of Crito (ΚΡΙΤΩΝ) 43a–44b After the trial, Socrates’s (wealthy; see Apology 38b) friend Crito visits him in prison. He brings news of his imminent execution. 44b–46a Crito tries to persuade Socrates to escape. Reason 1. The common people (οἱ πολλοὶ, hoi polloi) will think Crito let Socrates down, so the friends’ reputation will be damaged, with bad individual con- sequences. Reason 2. Money is not an issue. Reason 3. Socrates would be welcome abroad. Reason 4. Socrates complies with his enemies; he throws away his life. Reason 5. Socrates irresponsibly betrays his duty to his sons. Reason 6. Socrates is a coward. 46b–50a Socrates replies. To Reason 1: not all opinions have the same value. We should listen to the experts and the wise: the qualified. What matters in the present predicament is the expert on justice, for the question is whether it would be just for Socrates to abscond. Socrates reminds Crito that what is relevant is not merely a life, but a good life, or a well-lived life (τὸ εὖ ζῆν, to eu zên); and the good life is the just life. Socrates also reminds Crito of the long-held belief that one should never (willingly or intentionally) do an injustice (οὐδαμῶς δεῖ ἀδικεῖν, oudamôs dei adikein), and this entails that one should never do an injustice even if one is wronged, or somehow provoked (see Handout 6). Hence, the ‘established hypothesis’: non-retaliation. Doing injustice is doing harm and injury. Likewise for agreements or commitments (τις ὁμολογήσῃ, tis homologêsê): if they are just, one ought to fulfil them. -

CALLICLES His boyfriend Demos, son of Plato’s stepfather Pyrilampes, was in Dodds’s words (Plato: Gorgias, p., relying here primarily on Aristophanes’ Wasps ) ‘a leading beauty about ’. On usual assumptions about relative ages of lover and beloved, we might infer that Callicles was probably in his mid to late twen- ties at the same point in time. Although his ambition to succeed in politics makes Socrates describe him as lover of the Athenian demos (punning on Demos), this behaviour must be interpreted as opportunistic on Callicles’ part. The views Plato attributes to him are anything but democratic. And it is probably significant that of the friends of Callicles mentioned at c, one at least – Andron – is known to have been a member of the short-lived oligarchic regime of the Four Hundred in , and the other two probably to be identified with Athenians known from other evidence to have been wealthy men. There is no trace of Callicles in history outside the Gorgias. It seems likely that for whatever reason his ambitions were unfulfilled.
