Forte, M.A., Ph.D. Matthias Vorwerk, Ph.D. Abstract Plato’s myths of the afterlife have, for centuries, puzzled scholars. This has been the case for a number of reasons, including but not limited to Plato’s (perhaps intentional) lack of clarity about the function of those myths in their respective dialogues. This study provides a systematic account of this function: the psychagogy, or soul-turning, that these myths provoke in their readers—that is, the multifaceted ways in which souls are led out of the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge by these powerful image-rich passages. In the course of this account, new light is shed on the very concept of psychagogy in Plato, as well as on what exactly constitutes a Platonic myth of the afterlife, and also on the ways in which the Republic can serve as an illuminating lens through which to read the Phaedo and Gorgias. The study begins by laying out its foundation in chapter 1: an understanding of Platonic myth situated in secondary scholarship, a working conception of what constitutes a Platonic myth of the afterlife, and an understanding of psychagogy that incorporates both its description in the Phaedrus and its expression in the psychology, epistemology, and metaphysics of the Republic. The account of the Republic focuses in particular on the tripartite soul (rational, spirited, and appetitive) and on the simile of the Line and the Allegory of the Cave, which provide the interpretive tools for the subsequent study of the myths. The central chapters (2-4) examine the concluding myths of the Republic, Phaedo, and Gorgias: the myth of Er, the “True Earth” myth, and the Gorgias myth of judgment, respectively. Each chapter proceeds first with a literal reading of the myth, showing how such a reading engages each aspect of the reader’s tripartite soul, while also leading the soul from mere conjecture to belief or true opinion—that is, from the lowest stage of knowledge according to the simile of the Divided Line and the Allegory of the Cave to the second lowest. The second major part of each central chapter is a figurative or metaphorical reading that shows how such an interpretation, while engaging each aspect of the tripartite soul, leads it further than belief or true opinion toward knowledge in the vast realm of intelligible (as opposed to physical) realities. Chapter 5 considers other mythical passages in Plato regarding the afterlife, from the Phaedrus, Meno, Laws, Timaeus, Apology, and Theatetus, explaining why these passages are essentially different from the three central myths of the study and, thus, why those three, and not the others, properly constitute Plato’s afterlife myths. The essential difference is the specific manner in which the psychagogy of the three central myths is carried out, which draws largely on the consummating function of these myths within their respective dialogues. The dissertation concludes with a chapter spelling out the contributions of the study in further detail. This dissertation by Joseph M.     Maieutic Psychagogy (MP) MP is soul guidance that is using the wisdom of one’s soul in our day to day lived lives. For me this is and earthed guidance from the ground of our being and is profoundly different to ‘spiritual guidance’ which is guidance from without to higher causes and courses. The former is grounded incarnate and embodied the latter is ethereal, dis-incarnate and disembodied with the body considered pejoratively as needing to be sloughed off in order to reach the ‘higher’ chakras or levels of consciousness. MP is a psycho-therapeutic method of influencing behaviour by suggesting desirable life goals. In a more spiritual context, it can mean guidance from the soul. Psychagogy is considered to be the archaic predecessor of modern psychology. The role and exact expression of psychagogy has shifted throughout history, but its beginnings can be dated back to the time of Socrates and Plato. Psychagogic methods were implemented by such groups as the Stoics, Epicureans, and Cynics. The method was also eventually adopted by Paul the Apostle (also known as Saul of Tarsus), James, as well as other early Christian thinkers. Enduring well into the 20th century, psychagogy began to influence and be influenced by other psychological disciplines. Eventually the term psychagogy itself died out during the 1970s and 1980s. Ancient Greek Psychagogy The psychagogy of Ancient Greece, also known as maieutic psychagogy, involved Socrates (or another advanced teacher) helping a participant to give birth to realities from within the participant himself. Maieutic: from midwife, one who helps in the delivery of new life Psychagogy: from Greek, psûchê (soul) and agogê (transport) Within the ancient Greek tradition, psychagogy was viewed as the art of influencing the soul by the means of rhetoric.

Abstract: The long Greek tradition of political thought understood that cooperation among multiple individuals was an imperative for human survival. The tradition (here represented by passages from Plato’s Republic, Gorgias, and Protagoras, and from Diodorus of Sicily’s universal history) also recognized social cooperation as a problem in need of a solution in light of instrumental rationality and self-interest, strategic behavior, and the option of free riding on the cooperation of others. Ancient “anthropological” theories of the origins of human cooperation proposed solutions to the problem of cooperation by varying the assumed motivations of agents and postulating repeated interactions with communication and learning. Solon is cited and/or quoted thirty-four times in Plato’s dialogues, and alluded to many more times. My study shows that these references and allusions have deeper meaning when contextualized within the reception of Solon in the classical period. For Plato, Solon is a rhetorically powerful figure in advancing the relatively new practice of philosophy in Athens. While Solon himself did not adequately establish justice in the city, his legacy provided a model upon which Platonic philosophy could improve. Chapter One surveys the passing references to Solon in the dialogues as an introduction to my chapters on the dialogues in which Solon is a very prominent figure, Timaeus- Critias, Republic, and Laws. Chapter Two examines Critias’ use of his ancestor Solon to establish his own philosophic credentials. It takes place after the Apology and the Crito, on Socrates’s last night before his execution; Socrates has been waiting in prison for a long time due to an Athenian law barring executions during the annual ritual to celebrate Theseus’s mythical victory over the Minotaur. This story of the death of Socrates is embedded in a narration by Phaedo himself, who is relating the story to Echecrates. Socrates, after discussing the soul, the self, immortality, and death with Simmias and Cebes, Pythagorean acquaintances who have come to visit him, drinks the φαρμακον and dies. The myth of the Minotaur—a monster which has the body of a man and the head of a bull—is explicitly invoked in the text, which structurally mirrors this myth. Each has a monster, fourteen characters, and a thread which leads out of a labyrinth. In the myth, Theseus and the others are taken into the labyrinth wherein the Minotaur resides as tribute, as dictated by the Delphic Oracle, and the princess Ariadne gives Theseus a ball of thread to attach to the entrance, so he may find his way out again.

    Several questions at [email protected] were about hell. Will the wicked suffer forever in torments of flame? Will they be there as long as we are in heaven? What about people who don't know about Jesus? There were perhaps ten variations on this theme. I have been hesitant to answer these questions because I am in the middle of a major study on this myself. If you will offer me permission to "think aloud" on this difficult topic and be kind to offer me grace if I am wrong, I will go ahead and begin to answer. It may take several columns to deal with the issues involved. Full disclosure: I believe there are elements of ego and wish fulfillment that hover around any theological discussion. I want to be upfront about my own issues here. I was raised in the far right of the Church of Christ. All people who didn't follow our system were, I was assured, bound for eternity in flames. A million million years in torment, they would be no closer to the end of their suffering than they were on the day they died. This hell-bound group included more than the obvious candidates (smokers, drinkers, dancers, atheists, card players, Hitler). It also consisted of any person who went to any other church than our particular branch of the CoC. I didn't want that to be true. I agonized even as a young child about how God could burn people forever and yet say "God is love." I bring this up because, as I paw through this pile of books on my desk this cold, snowy morning, I want to be open and say that my desire to find an alternative view might be impacting me in subconscious ways.

This led them to an absorption with the Jewish creation myths in Genesis, which they obsessively reinterpreted to formulate allegorical explanations of how humans ended up trapped in the world of matter. The basic Gnostic story, which varied in details from teacher to teacher, was this: In the beginning there was an unknowable, immaterial, and invisible God, sometimes called the Father of All and sometimes by other names. “He” was neither male nor female, and was composed of an implicitly finite amount of a living nonphysical substance. Surrounding this God was a great empty region called the Pleroma (the fullness). Beyond the Pleroma lay empty space. The God acted to fill the Pleroma through a series of emanations, a squeezing off of small portions of his/its nonphysical energetic divine material. In most accounts there are thirty emanations in fifteen complementary pairs, each getting slightly less of the divine material and therefore being slightly weaker. The emanations are called Aeons (eternities) and are mostly named personifications in Greek of abstract ideas.
