An initiative of CLA’s co-founder, Arn Chorn-Pond, the KMMB brings music to the countryside, where people rarely have access to live music and arts. The project is led by Thon Seyma, a female singer and dynamic entrepreneur. CLA has spent the past year working with the KMMB team to create a business plan for their future, and provided support with training and resources. During the year, the KMMB was contracted to take three of our CLA troupes to the countryside for performances in the community, and it even became a flying bus, as the KMMB team helped to send two well-known Masters artists to Austria where they performed as part of the Glatt und Verkehrt Festival! DOWLING SCHOLARS FAMILIAR WITH SOUTHEAST ASIAN ART HISTORY are well aware of a confusing chronology for early Cambodian sculpture. One reason for this situa­ tion is obvious. For nearly fifty years, Cambodian art history has been wed to the work of George Coedes. Praised as the dean of Southeast Asian history, he was a member of an elite group of French scholars who worked in Cambodia for decades before World War II. In 1944, he wrote Histoire ancienne des hats hindouses d'Extreme-Orient, in which he established a chronological framework for early Southeast Asian history based on an interplay of Chinese texts and indigenous inscriptions. Most Southeast Asian historians readily admit that "his book remains the basic source for early South East Asian history, and while much recent re­ search, based upon new inscriptional evidence or re-readings, modifies some of Coedes' specific conclusions, the structure remains his" (Brown 1996: 3). Such a singular dependency on Coedes had a stifling effect on Cambodian art history. When Jean Boisselier, carrying on the work of Philippe Stern and Gilberte de Coral-Remusat, made a comprehensive attempt to set in order Cambodian sculpture, the French art historian fitted the works of art into Coedes' ready­ made chronology. Unfortunately, this all happened as if it were preferable to adjust Cambodian sculpture to a preconceived notion of history rather than ques­ tioning the model. In this way, some basic mistakes have been made, and these seriously affect the chronology and interpretation of early Cambodian sculpture.

A final syllabus will be provided to students on the first day of academic programming. SFS programs are different from other travel or study abroad programs. Each iteration of a program is unique and often cannot be implemented exactly as planned for a variety of reasons. There are factors which, although monitored closely, are beyond our control. There are numerous versions o f the story that cover all the major modes of creative expression in Cambodian culture. In addition to the literary and theatrical versions, the story also appears in different historical texts, as it is generally believed that the characters described in the story are based on actual people and events in Cambodian history. Despite Turn Teav's tremendous importance and popularity however, there are no studies that examine the extensive literary criticism on the text or the influence of the story in contemporary Cambodian culture and society. This work is an attempt to present an overview o f the literary criticism on Turn Teav and provide the reader with an insight into the viewpoints of contemporary Cambodian writers and intellectuals on the major themes in the story.

I worked with the “Consortium” organization under the administrative of UNHCR. The camp was at Phanat Nikhom, Chonburi, Thailand. I had good social relationship with all of my refugee students in the camp with all clans, tribes and countries. Especially for the Khmers, I learnt Khmer language and Khmer dance. I was fascinated with their arts so much. Apart from this, I took my Ph.D. topic from one part of my previous M.A. thesis “Some aspect of Buddhist arts in Thailand”. Its chapter “Lopburi art” helped me very much to make further studies on details of my present work on this Ph.D. thesis. The arrival of Indian culture in Cambodia can be traced back to the Funan empire, the first kingdom in Cambodia’s earliest history predating the Angkor empire. Prior to contact with Indian culture, local inhabitants had their own indigenous culture and customs. The interaction between both cultures allowed local inhabitants to freely absorb or choose what Indian cultural elements that would appeal to their thinking. At the same time, those elements were localised and modified. Indian epics, Ramayana, for instance, were considerably changed from their original form. Against this backdrop, the article examines the process of Indianization in Cambodia and shows how the local people formed their distinctive variations of the Indian cultural elements to reflect their ideas. Corey1 Cornell University In 2012 and 2013 Cambodian artists were showcased in some of the most prominent cities for contemporary art in the world.2 Works by sculptor Pich Sopheap, photographer Vandy Rattana, and the late painter Vann Nath were exhibited at dOCUMENTA (13) in Kassel, Germany. Pich enjoyed solo exhibitions at The Metropolitan Museum of Art and at his representative gallery, Tyler Rollins Fine Arts, in New York City, and in the group show Phnom Penh: Rescue Archaeology / Contemporary Art and Urban Change, hosted by the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (Institute of Foreign Relations) in Berlin and Stuttgart. The Season of Cambodia Living Arts Festival occupied numerous center stages in New York City during the months of April and May of 2013, organizing performances of dance, music, and theater, and through its Visual Arts Program, residencies and exhibitions for ten visual artists and one curator. Within its program, a symposium titled “Contemporary Art in Cambodia: A Historical Inquiry” took place at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). Cumulatively, it seemed that the oft-cited phrase “the rebirth of Cambodian art,” which presumed a nascent status for the arts, and symbolically, for Cambodia, had been rendered obsolete.     Guggenheim UBS MAP Global Art Initiative No Country: Regarding South and Southeast Asia Part II Symposium at the Queens Museum of Art, Thursday April 18, 2013 Edited video presentation by Ly Daravuth In 2009, I was invited to be part of a symposium in Hong Kong organized by the Asia Art Archive. As I recall, one of the discussion topics revolved around the issue of the emergence of the Asian contemporary art scene as a new paradigm. One of the participants challenged that assumption, and asked the following question: What is, or what would be, the so-called Asian paradigm? What kind of discourse does it really produce? Is it really an alternative discourse to the global or Western discourse? Or is it just another version of it? But certainly, that question echoed one of my own regarding Cambodian cultural and art practices. What would that be? What would qualify Cambodian art practices today as “modern” or “contemporary”? What would qualify it as Cambodian, eventually? Is it defined within the European nation-state concept—geography, citizenship—or is there some sort of Cambodian paradigm to draw from? In an exhibition and publication called Cultures of Independence: An Introduction to Arts and Culture of the ’50s and ’60s, which was presented at, and published by, Reyum Institute in 2002, and curated by Ingrid Muan and myself, we tried to explore that question through the cultural production—cinema, theater, paintings, architecture, music—of the fifties and sixties, when a young generation of the newly independent Cambodia started to produce a discourse. And in the context of the ongoing Season of Cambodia Festival that is happening today in New York, along with the No Country exhibition and symposium, there is a growing interest in Cambodian contemporary art, and it’s good.

The KAS provides counseling and education on good governance with a view to promote democratic political institutions and policies. The KAS works in 120 countries worldwide. Half of the foundation’s activities continue to be done in Germany. The office in Cambodia has been established in 1994. The partners include the National Assembly and the Senate, the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Interior and selected other ministries, the political parties represented in Parliament, media and civil society organizations. In recent years particular emphasis has been given to the support of democratic decentralization. Cambodian Concepts of Art and Culture Aditya Eggert Introduction During my field research in Cambodia from May to September 2010, I took part in the “National Amateur Play Writing and Directing Workshop”1 that was realised by the Cambodian government in preparation for the annual “National Arts Festival”2 in 1 The “National Amateur Play Writing and Directing Workshop”, which was also called the “Advanced Training Course on Public Arts Writing and Directing”, was organised by the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts (MCFA) between July 28 and 30, 2010, in Phnom Penh. Its aim was to provide amateur artists with “up-to-date knowledge” on play writing, theatre directing and classical dance choreography (MCFA 2010a). The workshop comprised speeches by high government officials and representatives from the Royal University of Fine Arts (RUFA). Final “discussions” allowed the participants to ask questions that were subsequently answered by the speakers.
