Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 2 Abstract One of the cornerstones of the Cambodian literary canon is the verse novel Turn Teav. There are numerous versions o f the story that cover all the major modes of creative expression in Cambodian culture. In addition to the literary and theatrical versions, the story also appears in different historical texts, as it is generally believed that the characters described in the story are based on actual people and events in Cambodian history. Despite Turn Teav's tremendous importance and popularity however, there are no studies that examine the extensive literary criticism on the text or the influence of the story in contemporary Cambodian culture and society. This work is an attempt to present an overview o f the literary criticism on Turn Teav and provide the reader with an insight into the viewpoints of contemporary Cambodian writers and intellectuals on the major themes in the story. Chapter 1 discusses different versions of the story in various genres, including literary, historical, oral, theatrical, and film, in order to demonstrate the story’s importance in Cambodian culture and society. Chapter 2 presents my revised translation of Turn Teav by Venerable Botumthera Som that was begun while completing my MA degree at Cornell. Venerable Botumthera Som’s manuscript was completed in 1915 and is the best-known version of the story. 3 Chapter 3 examines different texts o f literary criticism on Turn Teav, giving special attention to the controversy concerning the original author of the story. This chapter also discusses major themes in the story, namely traditional codes of conduct, abuse of power, and justice, and uses various examples from Cambodian literature to illustrate them further. Chapter 4 concludes this work with an analysis of several interviews that I conducted with Cambodian writers and scholars concerning the major themes in the story. This thesis is dedicated to them. 10 Chapter 1: The Importance Turnof Teav Introduction Turn Teav is a tragic love story about a talented novice monk named Turn and a beautiful adolescent girl named Teav. There are numerous versions o f the story that cover all the major modes o f expression in Cambodian culture. In addition to oral versions, there are literary versions as well as modern adaptations of the story for Cambodian theater and film.1 Turn Teav also appears in different historical texts, as it is generally believed that the characters described in the story are based on actual people and events in Cambodian history. The different versions of Turn Teav in various genres attest to the story’s tremendous importance and popularity in Cambodian culture and society.2 Turn Teav is a cornerstone o f the Cambodian literary canon and has been taught in Cambodian schools since 1957, the year Khmer literature was first introduced into the national curriculum after winning independence ! Turn Teen’ was performed in July 1999 at the Chatamuk Theater in Phnom Penh just prior to my arrival in Cambodia doing research for this dissertation. 2 The importance of Turn Teav has also been recognized by Western scholars of Cambodia. In addition to the late 19th century French scholars discussed in this chapter, the story has been o f current interest to modem scholars of Cambodia. See for example Alex Hinton’s article “A Head For an Eye: Revenge in the Cambodian Genocide” (American Ethnologist 25(3):352-377, 1998) in which Professor Hinton uses Turn Teav as a primary reference for trying to understand the atrocities committed by the Khmer Rouge.

    BRIEFING PAPER Recent Developments at the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia August, 2019 Recent Developments at the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia Case 002/2: Death of Nuon Chea Nuon Chea, popularly known as “Brother No. 2” to indicate his position as second only to Pol Pot in command of the Khmer Rouge, died at the age of 93 on August 4, 2019 at the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital. He had been convicted as a senior leader of the Khmer Rouge of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. The Supreme Court Chamber affirmed a 2014 Trial Chamber Judgment in 2016. A second Trial Chamber Judgment, issued with full reasoning in March 2019, was on appeal to the Supreme Court when Nuon Chea died. He was sentenced to life in prison under both judgments. Only the second judgment included charges of genocide. The second trial against Nuon Chea, with Khieu Samphan as his co-accused, was the most far-reaching of the court, covering crimes committed at a number of cooperatives, worksites, security centers, and execution sites across the country. The trial lasted 24 months and included the testimony of 185 people and over 5,000 evidentiary documents. Unlike the first trial, the second included genocide charges. Nuon Chea and Khieu Sampan were judged guilty of genocide with respect to Vietnamese populations and Nuon Chea was additionally found guilty of genocide with respect to Cham Muslims.     Folklore 112 (2001):23± 45 RESEARCH ARTICLE Killer Khilats, Part 1: Legends of Poisoned ªRobes of Honourº in India Michelle Maskiell and Adrienne Mayor Abstract This article presents seven historical legends of death by Poison Dress that arose in early modern India. The tales revolve around fears of symbolic harm and real contamination aroused by the ancient Iranian-in¯ uenced customs of presenting robes of honour (khilats) to friends and enemies. From 1600 to the early twentieth century, Rajputs, Mughals, British, and other groups in India participated in the development of tales of deadly clothing. Many of the motifs and themes are analogous to Poison Dress legends found in the Bible, Greek myth and Arthurian legend, and to modern versions, but all seven tales display distinc- tively Indian characteristics. The historical settings reveal the cultural assump- tions of the various groups who performed poison khilat legends in India and display the ambiguities embedded in the khilat system for all who performed these tales. Introduction We have gathered seven ª Poison Dressº legends set in early modern India, which feature a poison khilat (Arabic, ª robe of honourº ). These ª Killer Khilatº tales share plots, themes and motifs with the ª Poison Dressº family of folklore, in which victims are killed by contaminated clothing. Because historical legends often crystallise around actual people and events, and re¯ ect contemporary anxieties and the moral dilemmas of the tellers and their audiences, these stories have much to tell historians as well as folklorists. The poison khilat tales are intriguing examples of how recurrent narrative patterns emerge under cultural pressure to reveal fault lines within a given society’s accepted values and social practices.

    The Shape of Women: Corsets, Crinolines & Bustles – c. 1790-1900 1790-1809 – Neoclassicism In the late 18th century, the latest fashions were influenced by the Rococo and Neo-classical tastes of the French royal courts. Elaborate striped silk gowns gave way to plain white ones made from printed cotton, calico or muslin. The dresses were typically high-waisted (empire line) narrow tubular shifts, unboned and unfitted, but their minimalist style and tight silhouette would have made them extremely unforgiving! Underneath these dresses, the wearer would have worn a cotton shift, under-slip and half-stays (similar to a corset) stiffened with strips of whalebone to support the bust, but it would have been impossible for them to have worn the multiple layers of foundation garments that they had done previously. (Left) Fashion plate showing the neoclassical style of dresses popular in the late 18th century (Right) a similar style ball- gown in the museum’s collections, reputedly worn at the Duchess of Richmond’s ball (1815) There was public outcry about these “naked fashions,” but by modern standards, the quantity of underclothes worn was far from alarming. What was so shocking to the Regency sense of prudery was the novelty of a dress made of such transparent material as to allow a “liberal revelation of the human shape” compared to what had gone before, when the aim had been to conceal the figure. Women adopted split-leg drawers, which had previously been the preserve of men, and subsequently pantalettes (pantaloons), where the lower section of the leg was intended to be seen, which was deemed even more shocking! On a practical note, wearing a short sleeved thin muslin shift dress in the cold British climate would have been far from ideal, which gave way to a growing trend for wearing stoles, capes and pelisses to provide additional warmth.
