LIVRES Être hors de la littérature conduit, parfois, à mieux y entrer › Patrick Kéchichian n livre qui n’a l’air de rien, ne ressemble à rien, ne pèse presque rien. Un auteur qui a pris la déci- U sion, sa vie durant, de ne pas écrire, ou plus pré- cisément de ne pas faire, comme on dit, œuvre. Des pages blanches ? Non, pas vraiment. Alors, surtout, ne passez pas votre chemin. Apprenez à connaître, ou à entrevoir, à deviner ce qui anime l’auteur en question, Roberto Bazlen (1902-1965), à partir de quelques rares fragments publiés après sa mort, dont ces surprenantes Lettres éditoriales (1). Peu de choses à dire sur Bazlen, et cela est heureux, conforme à sa figure, neutre, toujours en voie d’effacement… Il était de Trieste, où il ne vécut pas toute sa vie, et fréquentait les milieux littéraires et éditoriaux. Il était proche d’Italo Svevo, d’Umberto Saba, d’Eugenio Montale, de Virgilio Giotti (2)… Daniele Del Giudice en fit le personnage, ou plutôt le sujet, le point de fuite, de son roman le Stade de Wimbledon (3). Très logiquement, William Marx, dans l’Adieu à la littérature, consacre quelques pages au Triestin, en qui il voit l’« incarnation du dernier écrivain, celui en qui la littérature trouve sa fin » (4). Pour des amis éditeurs chez Bompiani ou Einaudi, Baz- len rédigea quelques notes de lecture, en vue d’éventuelles traductions et éditions d’œuvres. Ces fragments furent ras- semblés en 1968 et traduits en 1999 au Passeur. Instead of leaving it as “neither nor,” viewing it as “both and” can help shape the critical view of the Italian literary landscape, as well as add to the picture of Austro-Hungarian literature. Joseph Roth’s Radetzkymarsch (Radetzky March) and Pier Antonio Quarantotti Gambini’s novel Il cavallo Tripoli (The Horse Tripoli) depict the experience of loss brought on by the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in similar ways, although they do so from different linguistic and national sides. However, the writings of the Italian author are generally categorized as representing a pro-Italian perspective and those of the Austrian as pro-Austro-Hungarian. This article argues that their novels provide a more nuanced portrayal of the world and identities than just their nationalities or political views do. Because of assumptions about the authors, the complexity of the novels’ representations of layered linguistic and cultural interactions have often been missed, especially those of Il cavallo Tripoli. -

Lara Fiorani University College London Roberto Calasso - Deconstructing mythology A reading of Le nozze di Cadmo e Armonia I, Lara Fiorani, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. ---------------------------- Lara Fiorani 2 ABSTRACT This thesis reviews Roberto Calasso’s Le nozze di Cadmo e Armonia (1988) and demonstrates that thematic and formal elements of this text allow us to to cast a post- modern and poststructuralist light on his theorization of ‘absolute literature’ – a declaration of faith in the power of literature which may appear to clash with the late twentieth century postmodern and poststructuralist climate responsible for concepts such as la mort de l’auteur. The importance of these findings lies in their going against Calasso’s claim that he never needed to use the word ‘postmodern’ and his complete silence on contemporary literary criticism, as well as on most contemporary authors. Calasso’s self-representation (interviews, criticism and the themes of the part-fictional work-in-progress) acknowledges as influences ancient Greek authors, both canonical and marginal; French décadence; the finis Austriae; Marxism; Nietzsche; Hindu mythology and Aby Warburg. These influences are certainly at work in Le nozze, however they may be employed to subvert Calasso’s self-presentation. I have explored in detail the representations of literature emerging from Le nozze, and shown that they allow the identification in Calasso’s texts of elements confirming his fascination with poststructuralism, in particular with the thought of Jacques Derrida, despite the complete silence on this philosopher throughout Calasso’s work. -

'Outside Perspective' to the Works of Kosovel by Illustrating And
K.Pizzi, 17/11/07, 12:52 [article published in Kosovelova Poetika/ Kosovel’s Poetics, special issue of Primerjalna knjizevnost 28(2005), pp. 239-249] ‘QUALE TRIESTINITA`?’: VOICES AND ECHOES FROM ITALIAN TRIESTE Abstract: In focusing on Italian Trieste and, in particular, on as large as possible a corpus of Triestine poetry contemporary to S.Kosovel, my paper provides a perspective that is peripheral and ‘outside’. Special attention is paid to the Futurist avant-garde: the Futurist leader Marinetti considered Trieste as Futurist city par excellence and the first Futurist soirees took place at Teatro Rossetti between 1909 and 1910. Futurism attracted a large group of local artists, some of whom (e.g. Carmelich and Cernigoj) were personally known by and became close to Kosovel. The poets Sanzin and Miletti espoused enthusiastically the Futurist linguistic experimentalism, as well as the movement’s national/nationalist tendencies. Poetry of national and romantic inspiration is also of fundamental importance: Slataper’s vitalist approach to the rugged Karst region, though pre-Great War, provides scope for comparative approaches. Nationalist poetry, much of which officially compromised with the Fascist regime (Cambon, Corraj, Alma Sperante), is equally integral to the Triestine cultural landscape of the 1920s and ‘30s. I provide evidence of the emergence in their work of a distinctly transnational approach to literary writing (narrative in particular), founded on a creative way of addressing questions of estrangement, the body, and memory. I consider the work of three authors, who have yet to be fully acknowledged in the Italian literary landscape: the Italophone writers Jarmila Očkayová (1955-present; Italo- Slovakian) and Ingrid Beatrice Coman (1971-present; Italo-Romanian living in Malta), and Marisa Madieri (1938-1996; Italo-Hungarian from Istria), whose native language was Italian. Trieste, 21 July 2015 - One of the most widely-consumed beverages on the planet, coffee is an elixir with a thousand aromas and a sensorial experience whose roots go far back in time. It is also an inspiration for innovation, research and the future. Since 1719 a freeport for the Hapsburg Empire on the Mediterranean, Trieste’s wharves have been the landing point for millions of sacks of coffee bound for Mitteleuropa's most famous cafés. Trieste still maintains a strong, deep-rooted coffee-inspired culture built on work, business, research and “taste”, and to this day remains a point of reference on the international panorama. From 22 July to 8 November, the Salone degli Incanti plays host to the “Il gusto di una città - Trieste capitale del caffè" exhibition [The Taste of a City - Trieste, Capital of Coffee]. Open to the public free of charge, the exhibition tells the complex, multi-national and multicultural story of coffee and the role the city of Trieste has played over the centuries in making and selling coffee. Promoted by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region government, the Municipality of Trieste, the Trieste Chamber of Commerce, illycaffè and the Trieste Coffee Cluster, the event is associated with Expo 2015, for which illycaffè is Official Coffee Partner and curator of the Coffee Cluster.
