HOMOTECIA Nº 10-14 Octubre 2016 HOMOTECIA Nº 10 – Año 14 Lunes, 3 de Octubre de 2016 1 Tras la publicación del editorial del número anterior, recibimos muchos comentarios de nuestros lectores. Algunos opinan que no es nada extraño hallar a nivel universitario docentes que al evaluar, usen estos mecanismos como herramientas punitivas, y además lo aplican de manera natural, con normalidad y regularmente , sin que ello tenga que ver con posiciones personales. Y esta característica punitiva es presentada hasta muy soslayadamente. Uno de estos comentarios lo recibimos de un asiduo lector, el ingeniero electricista HEAG. Ejerció su profesión trabajando para Corpoelec en varias localidades del estado Guárico y cuando llegó el momento de su jubilación, laboraba para ese momento en Valle de la Pascua. Al retirarse de esta compañía decidió residenciarse con su familia en la ciudad capital del estado Anzoátegui, Puerto la Cruz. Como aun se sentía joven y con fuerza para seguir trabajando, buscó y consiguió empleo como profesor de matemática en un instituto tecnológico universitario privado de la ciudad, quedando adscrito a la coordinación de esta área correspondiente a la carrera de Gerencia y Logística. Después de tres años en el cargo fue nombrado jefe de esta coordinación y es cuando surge el caso a exponer, el cual nos lo detalló mediante el envío de un e-mail a nuestra dirección electrónica. Al final del semestre de un determinado lapso, estando en su oficina se presentó una bachiller estudiante del primer semestre acompañada de dos mujeres, una de esta era su madre y la otra, de más edad, por el momento no se identificó. Luego de cordiales saludos, HEAG las invitó a tomar asiento y les preguntó: - ¿En qué puedo servirles? – dirigiéndose a la estudiante. - Perdón – interrumpió la madre – Déjeme explicarle. Mi hija durante todos sus estudios ha sido una excelente estudiante. Nunca ha sabido qué significa sacar menos de 18 puntos en una materia. Igualmente ha ocurrido acá en el tecnológico, en todas las materias tiene ó 18 ó 19 ó 20, excepto en Matemática I con la profesora… ¿Cómo es que se llama? – interrogando a su hija. - LG, mamá – respondió la joven. - ¡Aja! Esa misma es. Ayer le entregó la definitiva y le dijo que había aprobado con 14. ¡14! ¿Usted puede creer eso? Mi amigo HEAG le contestó: - Señora pero eso puede ser posible. En esa materia se introduce a los estudiantes en el estudio del Cálculo Diferencial, se comienza a estudiar límites, derivadas,… - Profesor, obvie esos detalles – interrumpiendo a HEAG – para el caso no interesa. Como ahora no se hacen exámenes finales, la profesora hizo que la sección presentara cuatro pruebas y las promedió. Cuando presentó el primer parcial, le informó a mi hija que había sacado 18 puntos pero no le enseñó el examen y mucho menos se lo entregó. Con las otras tres pruebas no se las enseñó ni se las entregó pero tampoco les dijo cuanto sacó. - Eso está mal pero posiblemente esa sea su calificación. - ¡No profesor! Mi hija dice que ella está segura de haber salido muy bien en esas pruebas y si ella lo dice es cierto. - Bien señora, vamos a ir en este momento al cubículo de la profesora para hablar sobre el caso – y le acotó lo siguiente a la madre – Pero antes quiero decirle lo siguiente. En esta institución la relación docente–alumno es una relación entre personas adultas, y su hija debió tratar este asunto directamente con la profesora. - Eso será con los otros estudiantes pero en el caso de mi hija no. Ella es menor de edad. Tan solo tiene 17 años – quedando HEAG sorprendido tras esta información. - Además profesor, sepa usted que mi hija trató de hablar con la profesora y le pidió hasta revisión de pruebas para poder constatar si su calificación era el tal 14. La profesora groseramente se la negó, diciéndole que si era que mi hija creía que ella estaba loca o que era una irresponsable en su trabajo. Es por eso que vinimos acompañada con la señora DM – señalando hasta la ahora no identificada otra mujer – ella es la Fiscal de la LOPNA de nuestro municipio. - Sí profesor – aclaró la señora DM – y por lo que he oído, la profesora de matemática ha violado varios artículos de la Ley al tratar a una menor de edad. Quizás sus acciones merezcan las sanciones que se estipulan y hasta se le suspenda como profesora. En ese momento mi amigo HEAG nos manifiesta que comenzó a sentirse agobiado. - Llegamos al cubículo de la profesora, el cual es bastante amplio ya que es el de todos los profesores de matemática del instituto; hay varios escritorios, en aquel instante algunos ocupados por profesores que atendían a varios alumnos, y un mesón más o menos grande con varias sillas a su alrededor ubicado en el centro. Al fondo se encontraba apoyado un estante que servía de biblioteca. Luego de saludar, amablemente solicité a los alumnos que se retiraran ya que teníamos que tratar un asunto delicado. Al dirigirme hacia la profesora LG noté que tenía un gesto que mostraba entre asombro y preocupación y veía reiteradamente a cada una de las personas que acabábamos de entrar. Invité a todos a sentarnos en el mesón, les dije: vengo a hablar específicamente con la profesora LG pero les agradecería que se queden. La bachiller acá presente ha hecho un reclamo sobre la calificación definitiva que usted le asentó en su materia. - Profesor, sobre eso no hay que hablar. Esa es su nota. - Me explico profesora. No es que esa sea la nota o no. Ella quiere constatar que lo es. Exige que usted le muestre las pruebas corregidas para ver en que falló y qué es lo que debe mejorar. - Profesor, yo también exijo que se respete mi trabajo. ¿O es que usted cree que vengo aquí a jugar? Además, en todos los institutos universitarios donde he trabajado, los profesores no están obligados a entregar las pruebas ni informar a los estudiantes los resultados. Al finalizar el semestre uno les dice cuál es su calificación definitiva en la materia. (CONTINÚA EN LA SIGUIENTE PÁGINA) HOMOTECIA Nº 10 – Año 14 Lunes, 3 de Octubre de 2016 2 - (VIENE DE LA PÁGINA ANTERIOR) - Profesora, cada instituto trabaja según sus normas. En el nuestro, el reglamento de evaluación es claro cuando puntualiza en su artículo correspondiente, que realizada una evaluación escrita, el docente debe corregirla y devolverla al estudiante en un tiempo no mayor a una semana. Si es de otro tipo, también se debe informar el resultado en el lapso de una semana. - Profesor, exijo que considere necesario que se respete mi posición – dijo la profesora ya muy alterada. - Déjamelo explicártelo con más detalles. La bachiller es menor de edad. La señora aquí presente – y le señalé a DM – es una fiscal de la Lopna y esta otra señora – señalando a la madre – es su mamá, su representante, y te ha denunciado ante la fiscalía municipal de la Lopna. Habiéndole dicho esto, LG comenzó a voltear agitadamente la cabeza mientras veía a cada uno de los sentados en el mesón como buscando apoyo. Posiblemente entendió la gravedad de la situación cuando ninguno de los presentes dijo nada. - ¡Así es profesora! – intervino de pronto DM - No es solamente que no le haya entregado las pruebas ni informado sobre sus resultados. Está el hecho de negarle la revisión de las mismas. Usted está consciente que hay testigos que vieron cuando se lo negó y que además lo hizo de manera grosera, lo que se considera maltrato y atropello a un menor de edad, es decir violó sus derechos constitucionales. Al proteger la Ley estos derechos, usted amerita ser sancionada según lo estipulado en ella, separada de su cargo por un tiempo determinado y sin poder ejercer en otra institución, además sin remuneración. Si esto sucede así, significaría que la demanda prosperó, por lo que de nada sirve que se niegue a mostrar las pruebas ya que estas se anularían y la joven las presentaría ante otro profesor. Al decir esto la señora DM, mi amigo cuenta que la profesora LG fue lentamente hacia su escritorio, abrió una gaveta y extrajo una gran cantidad de hojas de examen. Luego dijo: - Estos son los exámenes de las cuatro pruebas que apliqué a las dos secciones que atendí durante el semestre – su gesto mostraba gravedad. - ¿Están ordenados? – le pregunté. - No pero se supone que los de abajo corresponden a los primeros parciales – respondió LG. - Revisamos y encontramos el primer parcial de la estudiante, corregido y calificado con 18. LG, no sé por qué, mostró gesto de sorpresa. La estudiante lo chequeó y nos dijo que estaba de acuerdo. Después aparecieron los otros exámenes pero sin haber sido corregidos ni calificados. Vi a LG y le pregunté: ‘¿Y esto qué es?’. Bajó la cabeza y no respondió. Revisando los exámenes de los otros alumnos, detallé que la gran mayoría no estaban corregidos. Alcé la voz moderadamente y dije: ‘Señores en primer lugar hay que corregir ya entre todos los exámenes de la joven’. Todos estuvieron dispuestos al instante hasta LG pero intervine y le dije: ‘No tú no, en este momento eres la agraviante’. El resultado: 20, 20 y 19 que promediado con el 18 resultaba que su calificación debía ser 19. Luego agradecí la colaboración de los profesores y les solicité que corrigieran el resto de las pruebas ya que había que eliminar todas las fallas. Le garanticé a la bachiller, a su madre y a la fiscal de la Lopna antes de marcharse que yo personalmente me encargaría de acomodar ese entuerto y así lo hice.

    July 2019 Newsletter GEARS Founded August 13, 1939 News Field day was a success. This year GARS joined us out at the Masonic Lodge. The weather was very comfortable for a change. While band conditions were difficult at first, they improved by the morning. We haven’t totaled the points yet, however it seems that we did better than last year. We also got coverage from Action News and the Chico Enterprise Record. See photos below. My house was struck by lighting on May 30th, hitting my antenna and traveling down the feed line, through the radios and discharged into the house wiring. Fortunately the fire department put out the fire quickly and minimized damage. I’m off the air until repairs are completed to the house. See photo below. The GEARS/GARS new repeater project is proceeding along. The equipment has been ordered. We are waiting for approval from the US Forest Service before we can begin installation. At our next GEARS meeting Kevin Fullerton WB7SKS will be talking about emergency operations for the Camp Fire. He has some very interesting experiences to tell us about, and suggestions for preparing for emergencies. The Steak Bake is Sep.7th at Wildwood picnic area in Chico at 3:30pm - 7pm.     Foreword by Edwin M. McMillan I first met Martin Kamen in 1937, when he came to Ernest Lawrence's Radiation Laboratory at the University of California in Berkeley as a newly minted Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Chicago on a research fellowship. To set the stage for that event I should say something about what the laboratory was like then. It bore no resemblance to any modern research establishment. It had one building, an old wooden structure that had been scheduled for demoli- tion until Lawrence prevailed on Robert G. Sproul, then president of U.C., to save it for him. In this building worked a small group of dedi- cated people, some of them faculty, some graduate students, some visitors and fellows, under Lawrence's direction. There was no formal organization and no set program of research, and a newcomer like Martin pretty much had to find his own way. The fact that he was a chemist in a group dominated by physicists was no problem; there was plenty of chemistry to be done in the identification and purification of radioactive isotopes, and anyhow the kind of chemistry that he had. learned under William D. Harkins at Chicago had a large component of nuclear physics mixed with it. Then, too, there was Martin's friendly and cheerful personality, with its many facets and some eccentricities, such as his refusal to learn to drive a car. The Laws of Nature can be called Principles. Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin used the Laws of Nature to justify the separation of the American colonies from England in the Declaration of Independence: “When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness….” The Laws of Nature are principles but they may not always apply to every situation. In a healthy society, the application of the Laws of Nature are questioned.

    Martin David Kamen (August 27, 1913—August 31, 2002) and Sam Ruben (November 5, 1913—September 28, 1943) discovered how to synthesize the isotope Carbon-14 in February 27, 1940. Ruben was studying the chemical reactions in photosynthesis and wanted a way to track carbon through the process. He worked with Kamen to synthesize Carbon-14 by hitting graphite (which is pure carbon) with radiation. They also synthesized other isotopes of carbon, including Carbon-11. Carbon-11 wasn’t as useful to trace because it had a very short half-life. Sam Ruben, at Berkeley Martin Kamen, at Berkeley Carbon-14 Carbon is a molecule that normally has 6 neutrons and 6 protons, giving it the atomic number 12. Sometimes, radiation and other forces cause a molecule to change the number of neutrons in its nucleus. There are three naturally occurring isotopes (varieties) of carbon. Carbon-14 is the least common in nature and it is unstable—it will decay over time into nitrogen. Carbon Dating Willard Libby originally posited the use of radiocarbon as a dating method. He and his assistant, Ernie Anderson, then created the process by which to measure the changes in Carbon-14 concentration to determine the age of an artifact. In 1960, Libby was awarded a Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this. Carbon-14 is useful in dating objects for two reasons. First, Carbon-14 decays at a steady rate. The amount of Carbon-14 in a sample (present when the organism dies) will decrease by half every 5730 years. Second, dead tissues do not absorb Carbon-14, though living tissues do.
