Cependant, elle n'est apparue au grand public qu'en 1994 avec le premier synthétiseur en faisant usage : le VL1. Nous constatons donc qu'il s'agit d'une création très récente. La synthèse par modèles physiques revêt différents aspects. Quelques travaux universitaires s'attachent à l'étude d'un des aspects particuliers de cette technique mais aucun d'eux ne s'est encore attaché à une étude générale de cette synthèse. Il eut été dommage que cette technique continue à être méconnue des musiciens car elle diffère totalement des autres méthodes de synthèse et son apport pourrait être considérable. L'intérêt que je porte personnellement à la synthèse numérique du son, ainsi que la nouveauté, l'originalité et la méconnaissance de cette technique, m'ont donné le désir d'en faire un exposé clair et critique. En dehors des quelques musiciens et compositeurs privilégiés qui ont eu l'occasion d'utiliser une des formes existantes de synthèse par modèles physiques, la majorité des musiciens ignorent totalement de quoi il s'agit, et les privilégiés eux-mêmes ignorent parfois en quoi consistent les autres techniques qu'ils n'ont pas utilisées. J'ai donc pris le parti de décrire longuement et dans le détail les diverses méthodes de synthèse par modèles physiques, avant d'établir une critique générale de cette technique de synthèse, illustrées par des exemples sonores proposés sur les deux disques joints. Je remercie chaleureusement les compositeurs François Nicolas et Guillaume Loizillon qui ont accepté un entretien, ainsi que David Jaffe qui a bien voulu répondre à mes questions par courriers électroniques interposés. Je les remercie également, de même que Kaija Saariaho, de m'avoir procuré des enregistrements de leurs œuvres, parfois inédites. Nous nous attacherons dans ce mémoire à décrire tous les aspects de cette technique avant d'en faire la critique. Comme le fait remarquer Claude Cadoz1, le langage a tendance à produire des expressions contradictoires ou vides de sens quand il est utilisé trop vite à des fins de justification ou de rentabilité immédiates. Malheureusement, l'expression « modèles physiques » n'échappe pas à la règle. Le terme « modèle » désigne quelquefois l'ensemble des algorithmes dirigeant l'ordinateur ; d'autres fois, la modélisation d'un phénomène est confondue avec celle de ce qui l'engendre. Le mot « physique », quant à lui, n'apporte aucune information car la création d'un son par synthèse additive d'après une décomposition de Fourrier est également la modélisation d'un phénomène physique. « Est- ce en fait ce que l'on modélise qui est physique ou est-ce la manière de le modéliser ? Est- ce le modèle qui est physique ou la physique qui est modèle ?1 ». Pour préciser le sens de cette expression des plus floues, considérons une fois pour toutes que le « modèle » est le programme qui définit un objet susceptible de vibrer et que ce « modèle » est « physique » dans le sens ou il décrit physiquement l'objet, les matériaux qui le composent (bois de telle densité, de telle élasticité…) et les lois qui régissent le monde dans lequel

For example, to model the sound of a drum, there would be a mathematical model of how striking the drumhead injects energy into a two-dimensional membrane. Incorporating this, a larger model would simulate the properties of the membrane (mass density, stiffness, etc.), its coupling with the resonance of the cylindrical body of the drum, and the conditions at its boundaries (a rigid termination to the drum's body), describing its movement over time and thus its generation of sound. Similar stages to be modelled can be found in instruments such as a violin, though the energy excitation in this case is provided by the slip-stick behavior of the bow against the string, the width of the bow, the resonance and damping behavior of the strings, the transfer of string vibrations through the bridge, and finally, the resonance of the soundboard in response to those vibrations.
