INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH INTO ARTISTS’ MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUE

ANNUAL REPORT JANUARY – DECEMBER 2015

CATS Centre for Art Technological Studies and Conservation

The establishment of the first Danish cultural heritage research infrastructure, Centre for Art Technological Studies and Conservation (CATS), in 2011 became a reality thanks to a considerable donation from the VILLUM FOUNDATION and the VELUX FOUNDATION.

The centre is a strategic research partnership between three based research institutions  Statens Museum for Kunst (SMK)  The National Museum of (NMD)  The School of Conservation at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Schools of Architecture, Design and Conservation (KADK)

The cornerstone of CATS is technical art history, which is an interdisciplinary field of research between conservators, natural scientists and scholars from art historical and cultural studies. Technical art history investigates the making and meaning of art works, painting techniques and artists’ materials.

A main objective of the research centre is to develop new and more exact methods to diagnose, treat and preserve our art historical heritage. The exploration of artistic practices is aimed at shedding light on the complex and fascinating cartography of ageing processes within works of art – to contribute to and advance the field of technical art history.

CATS Annual Report, January - December 2015 3

Introduction

By Director of CATS, Prof. Dr. Jørgen Wadum

With pleasure we share our fourth annual report with information on a wealth of activities and new projects. CATS continues to perform state of the art in-depth scientific research in order to explore the material nature of works of art and the number of activities continue a steep upwards curve both in respect to internal conservation-restoration related requests but also from external stakeholders.

The projects will be described in detail on the following pages. Highlights, however, range from the documentation of a serious fading of Prussian blue warranting an art historical reassessment of the visual impact of the Danish Golden Age paintings; the participation in four parts of a Danish TV program on 1,000 years of ; offering a workshop in Tallinn, Estonia; the organisation of an international symposium on Dutch and Flemish art in European perspective 1500 – 1900; lecturing broadly for our peers as well as for the public; the initiation of two new research projects funded by respectively the Danish Ministry of Culture and the Danish Agency for Culture; the preservation of large scale frescoes by Jais Nielsen; and much more.

Research collaboration with Danish universities has been broadened simultaneously with our international engagement in the Integrated Platform for the European Research Infrastructure ON Culture Heritage where CATS holds a position in the steering committee. As part of this unique pan-European research infrastructure in Heritage Science we are participating in integrating national world-class facilities at research centres, universities and museums in order to provide open access to research data and equipment. This consortium includes DARIAH, the European Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities, which also aims to enhance and support digitally- enabled research and teaching across the humanities and arts.

Approaching a new year we shall embark on the final part of the Centre’s first 5 years of existence. We can already now foresee that all deliverables rooted in the Work Packages will be achieved. Therefore we during summer 2016 expect to provide a conclusive report with the achievements of all the ambitions of the research consortium as described in our grant application. In parallel we shall continue our engagement in reformulating our existence in preparation of becoming an even more multi-funded entity in the future.

CATS will continue to contribute to the understanding of the physical properties and behaviour of the substance of artworks as well as the materials with which they are treated. CATS in this way assist in the generation and evaluation of the perception of our visual culture. Art historical notions will be tested, our understanding of artistic creativity even so, and conservation programmes will be benefitting from new understanding and the development of new treatment methods in order to design strategies for the long-term preservation and stability of these materially complex objects.

On behalf of the CATS consortium I wish you a pleasurable read of the annual report 2015.

Jørgen Wadum Director of CATS

Studying the degradation of celluloses and integrating theories and research from other fields than paper, e.g. textile, wood etc. The work on this task and deliverable will include a study on the effect of enzymatic treatment on paper fibres. The study is postponed to 2016 where it will form part of a master thesis at the School of Conservation.

T5.2/D.2. The establishment of a watermark database The establishment of a CATS-SMK database of watermarks for the use in research into paper history and art history on a Danish and international level was commenced in January 2013. The database is built on the open source software from the EU-funded “Bernstein project” and will be linked to and made searchable through their “Memory of Paper” server. The collection of Nicolai Abildgaard’s works of art on paper at SMK was chosen as a pilot project in the establishment of the watermark database. The examination of these watermarks forms also part of T3.3/D1 ‘Abildgaard’s graphic works’. Due to a security issue, it has been necessary to wait for the development of a new extended version of the open source software from ‘Memory of Paper’. Members of the Bernstein group have now tested this new version and the software will be installed at the SMK server in January 2016. In the meantime, we have continued the recording of the watermarks in Abildgaard’s graphic works by digital photography in transmitted light. Furthermore, a collection of tracings of early Danish watermarks at SoC has been scanned and made ready for uploading to the database.

Watermarks from the Danish paper mill Strandmøllen showing the royal monograms of King Frederik III and Queen Sofie Amalie. The watermarks were found in paper documents dating from 1662 to1665.

The database so far contains the collections of pigments, paint cross sections, and canvas samples of the SMK as well as the collection of pigments held at the School of Conservation. In all 3829 samples are registered in the database and the number is increasing continually.

The sample types supported in the CATS Database are:  Non Invasive Methods  Fibres (paper)  Material Samples (179 canvas samples)  Paint Cross Sections (1876 samples)  Pigments (1774 samples)  Stretchers/Strainers

View of metadata on a paint cross section in the CATS Reference Collections Database

CATS Annual Report, January - December 2015 14

Each sample is recorded in its own template on four fans; sample metadata; analysis (done on the sample); artwork (from which the sample was taken or a non-invasive method was applied); images (of samples and the examined work of art). For artworks we’ve created a look up functionality which allows import of metadata along with an image (if such exists) from SMK’s collections database, Corpus. For artworks outside our collections metadata must be entered and images uploaded manually.

Estimated time frame in detail:  Usability testing and final adjustments – accomplished in December 2014/January 2015  Commence data entry into the system – accomplished in December 2014/January 2015  Implementation of CATS Reference Collections database across partner institutions and integration with CATS website – in progress (planned for 2015-2016)

Appendix 3 Related and extended CATS II projects

Satellite projects outside the main clusters, such as within the EU-project IPERION CH and bilateral research ventures with the Oslo University and Nationalmuseum in Stockholm will play a motivating and catalytic role in the way research will be driven into responses to not only internal but also external demands for advancement in the understanding of our complex heritage and its evolution through the ages.

It is here that CATS takes on the challenge to instigate Technical Art History & Heritage Science (TAH-HS) research that embraces the heritage disciplines into an interdisciplinary framework of advancing our understanding of the material past and present - for the future. Simultaneously these external projects will enhance the research profile of CATS and sustain its operations through renewed funding of staff and equipment.

We are pleased to inform that external funding have been secured for a number of important projects that will become part of CATS II:

A black future? Darkened lead-white on old master drawings and photographs One project is labelled A black future? Darkened lead-white on old master drawings and photographs which was established by CATS in collaboration with the Royal Library (KB) and funded by the Danish Ministry of Culture.1 This research project will examine air-quality in galleries and storage facilities at SMK and KB in order to understand possible air pollutants as a cause for the sudden and dramatic alteration of lead white (basic lead carbonate) into dark lead (lead sulphite).

The hypothesis is that this change could have been provoked by high amounts of hydrogen sulphite (H2S) abundantly available in large cities and partly caused by emission from cars fitted with the relatively new device called a catalytic converter. The results of this study will be disseminated to Danish and international colleagues and collections caring for comparable objects.

Degradation of Polyurethane foam in large Danish artworks dating from 1960 to the present day Another project, supported by The Danish Agency for Culture (Kulturstyrelsen), is researching for alternative methods for the stabilisation of polyurethane foam (PUR) in modern and contemporary art works. day2 CATS will be seeking active collaboration with other Danish art museums with objects of this kind at risk. The project outcome will be transmitted to the field via a workshop to be held in Vejle, and where the researchers in dialogue with conservators from a variety of museums will discuss potential preventive measures for PUR – a material that over time becomes very unstable and fragile.

After the Black Death: Painting and Polychrome Sculpture in Norway, 1350‒1550 Additionally funds have been secured for national and international engagements in projects of relevance for the CATS consortium, alternatively in projects where CATS is functioning as a consultant resource and active research partner. This is the case with the project After the Black Death: Painting and Polychrome Sculpture in Norway, 1350‒1550 comprising researching altars and sculptures from the collection of the Historical Museum in Oslo, funded through NOK 9 m by the Norwegian Research Council.3

CATS staff will perform advanced non-destructive dendrochronological dating and provenance determination of the timber used for the altars and draw up hypothesis on the trade and manufacture of the Norwegian altars seen against the production of retables and altars in Northern Europe in general. Scientific analysis of pigments and binding media will be performed, and the

Chain-lines in paper Equally so CATS is engaged in an international research and documentation project building a database on Chain-lines in paper from the Rijksmuseum, The Metropolitan Museum and The Royal Collection of Graphic Art (KKS) at SMK and researchers at The Royal Library (KB). Our partners are Prof Dr C. Richard Johnson Jr., Cornell University, Ithaca, and Prof Dr William A.
