    Press release 7 Sept 2017 / Free for publication The Ateneum's spring 2018 exhibitions to feature Adel Abidin and Italian art The von Wright Brothers exhibition will open the Ateneum's winter season by presenting landscapes, still lifes, images of nature, and scientific illustrations by Magnus, Wilhelm and Ferdinand von Wright. In February, an exhibition of works by the contemporary artist Adel Abidin will explore the relationship between power and identity. In May, the halls on the third floor will be taken over by Italian art from the 1920s and 1930s. Exhibitions at the Ateneum Art Museum The von Wright Brothers 27 Oct 2017–25 Feb 2018 The exhibition will offer new perspectives on the work of the artist brothers Magnus, Wilhelm and Ferdinand von Wright, who lived during the period of the Grand Duchy of Finland. In addition to the familiar nature depictions and scientific illustrations, the exhibition will present an extensive display of landscapes and still lifes. The brothers' works will be accompanied by new art by the photographic artist Sanna Kannisto (born 1974) and the conceptual artist Jussi Heikkilä (born 1952). The historical significance of the von Wright brothers for Finnish art, culture and science is explored through 300 works. In addition to oil paintings, watercolours, prints and sketches, exhibits will include birds stuffed by Magnus von Wright, courtesy of the Finnish Museum of Natural History. The chief curator of the exhibition is Anne-Maria Pennonen. The Ateneum last staged an exhibition of works by the von Wright brothers in 1982. The exhibition is part of the programme celebrating the centenary of Finland's independence.

    ‘NORTHERN GODS IN MARBLE’ The Romantic Rediscovery Marble of Norse Mythology [ KNUT LJØGODT ABSTRACT The Norse myths were rediscovered in the late 18th century, and became important to contemporary culture during the first half of the 19th century. The Romantics discussed the usage of themes from Norse mythology; soon, these themes became widespread in art and literature. Their popularity is closely connected with the national ideals and political situations of the period, but they were often given individual artistic interpretations. The ] Romantic interest in Norse myths and heroes held sway over artists and writers throughout the 19th century. KEYWORDS Norse myths, Norse heroes, pagan religion, Knud Baade, Romanticism vs Classicism. Introduction Karen Blixen’s short story ‘Sorrow-Acre’, published in Winter’s Tales (1942) takes place at a Danish country estate in the late 18th century. During a conversation between the baron and his nephew, they discuss Classical versus Norse mythol- ogy. The young man has discovered the Norse myths through a recently pub- lished work: ‘He mentioned the name of the author, Johannes Ewald, and recited a couple of the elevated verses.’ The book he refers to is Ewald’s play The Death of Balder (1775). He goes on to praise the Norse gods: ‘And I have wondered, while I read,’ he went on after a pause, still moved by the lines he himself had declaimed, ‘that we have not till now understood how much our Nordic my- thology in moral greatness surpasses that of Greece and Rome. If it had not been for the physical beauty of the ancient gods, which have come down to us in marble, no modern mind could hold them worthy of worship.

Painted at a time in the 1 8 th century when the prevalent and popular manner was that better known to us by the works o f the notable Frenchmen, Largillibre, Nattier, De Troy and others, these two painters caught something o f the naivété and grace which marked the productions of these men. In so clear a degree is this observed, not so much in genre, as in portraiture, that the presumption is, although it is not on record, at any rate as regards Pilo, that they must both have studied at some time in the French capital. N o other painters of note, indigenous to the soil o f Denmark, had allowed their sense of grace such freedom to so express itself.

The Abolition of the Norwegian Nobility 1814-1824 David Redvaldsen UCL Abstract The Norwegian Constitution of May 1814 contained several radical provisions. Paragraphs 23 and 108 prohibited the king to create new nobility or bestow other hereditary privileges. While an overwhelming majority at the Constitutional Assembly voted to restrict aristocracy, existing noble families were allowed to retain some of their privileges. This article identifies these families and states what the privileges involved. In November 1814 Norway entered a forced union with Sweden. The remaining rights of the nobility and the institution itself caused dissent between parliament and the Swedish King. In 1816, 1818 and 1821 parliament voted to abolish aristocracy. On the first two occasions the King vetoed the bill, but he reluctantly sanctioned it in 1821. This was because the constitution had established a mechanism whereby parliament could override the royal veto. In return for the king’s sanction, parliament accepted the principle of compensation for lost noble rights and agreed to consider a proposal by the king to institute a new order of nobility without legal privileges. The latter was rejected in 1824 with reference to the constitution. The constitution was thus vital at every stage in abolishing the nobility. As noted by Ulf Torgersen, the country has no social register, hardly any exclusive clubs, few private schools, no real rival to ‘Epsom, Henley, or the Grand National’ and there are no society pages in Norwegian newspapers (Torgersen 1974: 208, 209).
