Abstract An updated checklist of leeches (Annelida: Hirudinea) from Bosnia and Herzegovina is presented. The current checklist includes 21 species and subspecies in 14 genera and six families. There are 18 aquatic species (17 freshwater and one marine), two semi-aquatic species and one terrestrial. Two species, Piscicola hadzii Sket, 1985 and Dina sketi Grosser & Pešić, 2014, inhabit only a few localities in Bosnia and Herzegovina and can be considered as endemic species to this area. Based on the original data from the recent research, new records of Dina sketi are given.

Key words: Hirudinea, diversity, endemic leeches, new records, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Introduction

The first work on the leeches from Bosnia and Herzegovina was given by Von Dr. Ludwig Johansson in the early twentieth century (Johansson 1913). Subsequently, further contributions to the knowledge of leeches in Bosnia and Herzegovina were provided by Remy (1937), Autrum (1958), Sket (1968, 1985) and Šapkarev (1978). In the field of systematics, papers given by Johansson (1913), Autrum (1958) and Sket (1985) included descriptions of new species whose holotypes originated from Bosnia and Herzegovina. On the other hand, papers given by Remy (1937), Sket (1968) and Šapkarev (1978) dealt with faunistics and distribution of leeches at the national and/or regional level. Ecological patterns of leeches from the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina are poorly investigated and generally there is a lack of studies on their autecology. The latest checklist of leeches from Bosnia and Herzegovina was published by Lelo & Kašić-Lelo (2012). They listed 17 species for the whole country, although without providing details on their occurrence. The checklist by Lelo & Kašić-Lelo (2012) also missed records from Matoničkin & Pavletić (1960). Recently, our knowledge of leeches from Bosnia and Herzegovina was broadened by adding records of new species for the national (e.g., Trocheta haskonis), as well as by describing one species that is new for the science (Dina sketi).

The aim of this paper is to give an updated checklist of leeches for Bosnia and Herzegovina. Moreover, new records are given for Dina sketi, enlarging our knowledge of the distribution of this endemic species.

Material and methods

The checklist of leeches from Bosnia and Herzegovina was compiled with the analysis of published literature records and the original author’s data. Nomenclature and taxonomical status of leeches are given according to Nesemann & Neubert (1999) and Košel (2004). For new findings leeches were collected with a tweezers from the underside of hard substratum and on submerged plants as well as on the banks. The material is preserved in 96% ethanol and deposited in the author’s collections.

Results

The updated checklist of leeches from Bosnia and Herzegovina includes 21 species and subspecies of leeches, from 14 genera and six families (Table 1). The most species rich families are: (seven species), Glossiphoniidae (five species) and Piscicolidae (four species). The other families are represented by three species (Hirudinidae), and with a single species each (Haemopidae and Xerobdellidae).

Discussion

In comparison with the last checklist given by Lelo & Kašić-Lelo (2012), the updated checklist includes the following species: Trocheta cylindrica Örley, 1886, T. haskonis Grosser, 2000, Limnatis nilotica (Savigny,

Ecologica Montenegrina, 29, 2020, 10-19 15

AN UPDATED CHECKLIST OF LEECHES FROM BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

1822) and Dina sketi Grosser & Pešić, 2014. Trocheta cylindrica has been reported from Bosnia and Herzegovina by Matoničkin & Pavletić (1960) under the name of T. bykowskii Gedroyć, 1913. The latter species has been synonymized by Košel (2004) with T. cylindrica. Limnatis nilotica has been listed from Bosnia and Herzegovina by Phillips & Siddall (2009) in their phylogenetic analysis of the family Hirudinidae, but without specifying locality details. The degree of leech endemism in Bosnia and Herzegovina is moderate. Based on the available data only two species, i.e., Dina sketi Grosser & Pešić, 2014 and Piscicola hadzii Sket, 1985, can be considered as endemics. Piscicola hadzii is known only from the Buna River (spring and first-order stream) in south- western part of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Sket 1985). Dina sketi inhabits few springs in Cvrcka river basin in north-western part of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Grosser et al. 2014a; Pešić et al. 2016). In this study we have reported this species in the springs and streams of the Crna Rijeka Basin (Table 1), about thirty kilometers southwest of the previously known localities (Figure 1).

Figure 1. Distribution map of Dina sketi Grosser & Pešić, 2014 based on the literature data (blue spots) and a new field records (red spot) (a); spring and stream at locality Balkana (b); specimens of Dina sketi (c).

Two species Xerobdella anulata Autrum, 1958 and Dina absoloni Johansson, 1913 have a wider distribution restricted to the . Terrestrial leech Xerobdella anulata is known only from a few localities in the mountainous area of the central part of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Autrum 1958). It has also been reported from (Dresscher et al. 1966) and (Sket 1968). The taxonomical status of this rare leech species, as well as its distribution and ecology is still not clear (Dresscher et al. 1966; Sket 1968). Further research aimed at clarifying its distribution range is highly required. Stygobiotic Dina absoloni inhabits the south-eastern parts of the Dinaric karst (Sket et al. 2001). This species was described by Johansson (1913) from the subterranean cave waters of Popovo in southern Herzegovina. On the Balkans, this species inhabits nearby areas in Croatia (Sket et al. 2001), (Grosser et al. 2014b, Živić et al. 2017) and Montenegro (Grosser et al. 2015). The largest number of leech species and subspecies of Bosnia and Herzegovina have a wider geographical distribution. This applies also to Pontobdella muricata (Linnaeus, 1758) (see Yanar et al. 2019), the only marine representative in the leech fauna of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The number of leech species and subspecies in Bosnia and Herzegovina is lower in comparison with the neighboring countries, with the exception of Croatia (Figure 2). Grosser et al. (2014b) reported 29 species from Montenegro, while 39 leech species have been reported from Serbia (Grosser et al. 2015, Živić et al. 2017). The latest checklist of leech fauna of Croatia was given by Sket (1968) who listed 15 species and subspecies for this country. It is expected that the number of species will increase in the future, so many leech species will be found in Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially those present in neighboring countries. In summary, it can be concluded that the leech fauna of Bosnia and Herzegovina is still far from being well studied. This study is intended to facilitate future research that should focus on parts and that have been relatively poorly studied so far.
