CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Problem

Conflict cannot be separated from social problems that arise because of differences in a society, such as: status, opinions, views, and others.

The word “conflict” comes from the latent word “conflictus”, which means collision or clash.1 A.J Dubrin said that “conflict refers to the conflict between individuals or groups that can increase tension as a result of interdependence in achieving goals.” 2 Another expert also explains about conflict.

Nicholas said that: “conflict is an existing state of disagreement or hostility between two or more people”.3 From the quotation before can see that conflict exist if there is a disagreement or another opinion in two or more parties in the same issue. It thus suggests the pursuit of incompatible goals. Put differently, conflict means collision course; it also refers to opposition to existing view, stand, or position.

Correlated to the literally work, many experts said that literature was born based on the society‟s condition and literature is created to be understood and used by some societies.4 It means that literature is the result of various thoughts in beautiful wrap and hides in a work of literature that can be enjoyed by anyone.

P,62-63 2

However, essentially literally works it has another meaning is hidden and it is not presented or tell directly.

There are some kinds of literary work such as: film, novel, drama, autobiography, short story, and poetry.5 From those kinds of literary works above the writer interests to analyze film, where the title is Wonder Woman Film by

Patty Jenkins. Film is considered to be an important art form, a source of popular entertainment and a powerful method for education or introduction citizens.6

There are some reasons why the writer uses this film because this film tells about a woman who grew up as a princess on a remote island who was isolated but was able to stop the first world war involving 27 countries, the female figure in this film was very inspiring that with strong desire and perseverance and the belief that she could doing what other people think she can't afford even in the end she can make the world peaceful without war.

Wonder Womanfilm is a 2017 American based on the DC

Comics character of the same name. It is the fourth installment in the DC

Extended Universe (DCEU) with a screenplay by , from a story by

Heinberg,

This film got three nominations at the 23rd critics‟ choice awards, winning best action film and on February 2018 Rotten Tomatoes has listed the film as no.2 on its list of the “Best superhero films of all time.

There are some possible problems that occasionally happen related to main character that when she wants to learn to fight but her mother did not allow her to

do that then she to ask her aunty to gives her a lesson even thought without her mother permission there is a conflict that arise because of that. It can be seen in the picture and dialogues below:

Picture7

Queen Hippolyta : It seems I'm not the revered queen I should be. Disobeyed, betrayed by my own sister...8 Diana : No, Mother. It was me, I asked her to...9 Queen Hippolyta : Take her to the palace. Off you go.10 Antiope : You left me no choice, Hippolyta.11

From the pictures and dialogues above we can see that there is a conflict between queen Hippolyta and her sister because her sister gives the lesson to princess Diana without her permission and from the dialogues above can see that this is the part of princess Diana‟s strategies is used to make herself stronger and braver than before she knows that her mother's desire to forbid her to practice battle so that she can live comfortably as a princess, enjoys it all with pleasure but the desire to create a peace world makes her decide that she should practice

fightand help the war that takes place in the outside world no matter whether she will be hurt or die because she know it is something right, she wants to show to her mother if she can do things that her mother thinks she cannot do before and also she wants to kill Ares God of war to get her dreams because of that she has an ambition to be strong smart and do everything she wants. Queen Hippolyta got mad to princess Diana because she knows that princess Diana learn to fight with her aunty without her permission, she thinks that her sister Antiopedoes not respect with her because she still gives the lesson to Diana even she does not give the permission for her to do that.

Finally, based on the reasons above, the writer will analyze this thesis under the title “The Impacts and Strategies in Managing Conflicts by the

Main Character in Wonder Woman Film by Patty Jenkins”.

How the impacts of the conflicts and how the way of princes Diana‟s strategies solve the conflicts. Princess Diana is the daughter of queen Hippolyta and grows up on the Amazon island of

Themiscyra After American and spy Steve Trevor crashes offshore of the island and is rescued by her, he tells the Amazon‟s people about the ongoing world war. Princess Diana thinking the war is caused by an old enemy of the

Amazons, and then leaves her home in order to end the conflicts. The writer will take the data from her utterance, scenes and the dialogues in the Wonder Woman

Film by Patty Jenkins.

CHAPTER II

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

2.1 Theory of Conflict

In this research the writer also use theory of conflict to answer formulation of problem. Here the writer will analyze about the conflicts faced by the main characterand conflict that exist in the Wonder Woman film by Patty Jenkins.

Conflict cannot be separated from social problems that arise because of differences in a society, such as: status, opinions, views, and others.

The word “conflict” comes from the latin word “conflictus”, which means collision or clash.12 A.J Dubrin said that “conflict refers to the conflict between individuals or groups that can increase tension as a result of interdependence in achieving goals.” 13 Another expert also explain about conflict.

Nicholas said that: “conflict is an existing state of disagreement or hostility between two or more people”.14 From the quotation before can see that conflict exist if there is an disagreement or another opinion in two or more parties in the same issue. It thus suggests the pursuit of incompatible goals. Put differently, conflict means collision course; it also refers to opposition to existing view, stand, or position. In both explanations above seems like have same meaning of conflict, in this case the writer will use theory of conflict to answer the problems.

12Genneby N and Markosyan R. (2012) T-KIT Youth transforming conflict, StrasbourghCedex: Council of Europe. P. 54 13Fritz H.S Danamik. (2013). MembentangFaktaDuniaSosial(SOSIOLOGI) , Jakarta: PT. BumiAksara, p. 152 14Sheriff F. Florin. Types and Causes of Conflict, Ota Nigeria: Covenant University, p.2 8

2.2.1 Type of Conflict

According to Nina Genneby and Ruben Markosyan in their book there are some types of conflicts: a. Intra Personal Conflict

Intra personal conflict: is the conflict which occur within an individual as a result of frustration they feel with themselves over their personal goals, targets, plans, or accomplishment, or as a result of competing values and questions of consciences. For example, the seriousness of an intrapersonal conflict can range from not being ableto make up people mind over whether to eat pizza or a sandwich for dinner, whetherto join a militant group or a peace organization.15 b. Inter Personal Conflict

Inter personal conflicts: these are conflicts that take place between two individuals, which reoccur on a regular basis during their relationship. For example, include conflict between couples in relationship, between superiors and subordinates in a work context, between students and teachers or professors, or between representatives of two or more cultural groups. Another example is, a manager and a secretary are in conflict over responsibilities. The managerhas more power because he or she is higher up in the hierarchy of the companythan the secretary, who according to the rules should take instructions from the manager. The manager decides to use this power, and disciplines the secretary for notdoing what he or she was told to do.16

15Genneby N and Markosyan R. (2012) T-KIT Youth transforming conflict, StrasbourghCedex: Council of Europe. P. 58 16Genneby N and Markosyan R. (2012) T-KIT Youth transforming conflict, StrasbourghCedex: Council of Europe. P. 59 9

c. Inter Group

Inter group conflicts; inter group conflicts take place between various formal and non-formal groups. These conflicts often take place in organizations.

For example, intergroup conflicts takeplace between the government and trade unions, between groups that form one class (for example, different elements within the working class),between departments within an organization, orbetween cultural groups in a community. Theseconflicts often take place in organizations

(anotherexample, a conflict between the representatives ofthe union and the management in a particular factory over working hours), or in educationalinstitutions (between lecturers and students, or between the class and a singlestudent in the class).17 d. Intra Society

Intra society conflicts or social conflicts most often refer to conflicts of a larger scale that have a strong public resonance. This type of conflict is very much associated with power and competition. For example, conflictsbetween the top management of a big companyand a trade union over pay conditions for employees might at first sight seem like asimple intergroup conflict. The same can be said for a conflict between a studentgroup and the administration of a university over access to decision making in theuniversity.18

From the explanation above there are many types of conflicts, but in here the writer only focuses on 3 part of type conflicts such as: intra personal conflict, inter

17Genneby N and Markosyan R. (2012) T-KIT Youth transforming conflict, StrasbourghCedex: Council of Europe. P. 59 18Genneby N and Markosyan R. (2012) T-KIT Youth transforming conflict, StrasbourghCedex: Council of Europe. P. 60 10

personal conflict and intra society conflict. Which like the writer wants to analyze about the conflict that happened to the main character. Conflict with her relationship with her mother and society even the conflict with her own self.

2.2.2 The Impact of Conflict

2.2.2.1 Positive Impact

Positive impact of conflict is often referred to as a function of conflict, affirming that social conflict also has consequences of positive consequences that contribute to a society or system.19 While the positive impact of a conflict is as follows: a. Strengthen and reinforce group boundaries. For example, in the process of

conflict, it becomes increasingly more aware of how the value and purpose of

a party is different or contrary to the opposite party. At the same time,

awareness of self-identity as a group member increases b. Increased internal solidarity and in-group integration. For example, when a

group faces threats from an outside group (out-group) the members of the

group develop into more cohesive and united in their efforts to defend

themselves. The higher the level of hostility or conflict with outside groups,

the more internal solidarity and internal group integration will increase. Often

conflicts are even engineered by finding common enemies in order to maintain

solidarity. c. Conflict with certain groups will lead to an interesting relationship between

groups with each other. For example, efforts to combat drug / drug abuse are

19Fritz H.S Danamik. (2013. MembentangFaktaDuniaSosial(SOSIOLOGI) , Jakarta: PT. BumiAksara, p. 166 11

done by strengthening relationships between student council officials from

various schools. d. Conflict can usually arouse citizens who are passively becoming active in

carrying out certain roles in society. For example, the rampant terrorist act of

bombing has led to increased awareness of citizens to monitor their

environment and revitalize social control. e. The emergence of strong and enduring individuals. For example, the more

often group members are confronted in conflict situations, then it can be

ascertained that their strengths and skills in managing conflict will increase. f. Directing innovation and change. For example, due to the existence of a

government policy that is considered detrimental to the community, there are

massive demonstrations by various elements of the community, which are not

infrequently also clashed with security forces. Because demonstrations last

long and with an intensity that tends to increase, there are three possibilities

that can occur, among others

1. The fall of the ruling government because it has lost the trust of the

community.

2. Replacement of a number of officials who are considered most responsible

for the emergence of the policy.

3. The abolition of the policy that was felt to be detrimental and formulated a

new policy by paying attention to the interests of all elements of society. g. As a means of evaluation. For example, conflict helps group members to

evaluate weaknesses and shortcomings that still exist in groups and 12

communities, so action can be taken immediately to correct them. Without

conflict, members might assume that there are no problems in all aspects of

community life, so there is no need to make improvements h. There is a new compromise regarding aspects of certain aspects of community

life. For example, if the conflicting parties have balanced power. In this case,

conflict can encourage new consensus or agreement on various aspects of

community life.20

2.2.2.2 Negative Impact

Negative impact of conflict are often referred to as conflict dysfunction.

Conflicts are considered to be detrimental and threaten the unity of a group or society.21 While the negative of a conflict is as follows: a. Breaking of relationships between individuals and group unity. For example,

if a conflict occurs between members of a group in a group, the consequence

is that group disintegration is threatened by division because some members

may choose to resign or leave the group. b. Damage to property and loss of human life. For example, in social conflict

accompanied by violence, acts of destruction, anarchism, to the act of injuring

or losing the life of an opponent is a consequence that is often unavoidable c. Changes in individual personality in this case, conflict can be a stimulus that

changes the personality and attitudes of individuals. For example, individuals

who were originally known as friendly, friendly, and always avoided violence,

20Maryati Kun, Juju Suryati, Sosiologi, Erlangga, p.61.google book. Web. 18 sep 2018 21Fritz H.S Danamik. (2013. MembentangFaktaDuniaSosial(SOSIOLOGI) , Jakarta: PT. BumiAksara, p. 167 13

if they experienced trauma due to conflict, may turn out to be aggressive and

consider violence to be the most effective communication medium. d. Domination of the winning group over the losing group. For example,

intentional and systematic killing of members of defeated groups, expulsion,

slavery, segregation or separation and assimilation or assimilation, which are

sometimes carried out by force.22

From the statement above there are kinds of positives impact and negative impact in conflict as the writer wants to analyze about conflict that happened in

Diana‟s life in the Wonder Woman film that have impact to herself and also to the people around her.

2.2.3 Conflict Resolution

Conflict resolution is conceptulized as the methods and processes involved in facilitating the peaceful ending of conflict and retribution.

In practice, there are a number of strategies that can be applied simply to resolve conflict. According to Susan in Fritz H.S Danamik‟s book:

“There are several strategies that can be done to resolve conflict, such as: abandoning or leaving conflict, avoiding, dominating or mastering, bonding or serving getting help or seeking third party assistence, humor or be humorous and relaxed, postpone, compromise, integrate or attempt to integrate interests with each other, and problem solving or working together to solve problem.”

Based on the conflict management by the british council (2001) that the resolution of a conflict that occurred can be done to resolve the conflict as follows:

22Maryati Kun, Juju Suryati, Sosiologi, Erlangga, p.62.google book. Web. 18 sep 2018

14

a. Negotiation, a process to enable conflicting parties to discuss possible options

and reach resolution through face to face interaction. b. Mediation, a process of interaction assisted by a third party so that the parties

to the conflict find a settlement that they agree on their own. c. Arbitration or trust in dispute, actions by a third party authorized to decide and

execute a settlement.23

From the statement above there are several of strategy to resolve the conflict in this case the writer also seen in the Wonder Woman film how Diana resolve her conflicts and also for answer the questions of problem.

2.2 Sociological Approach

There are many types of theory and approach which has a function in analyzing the literally works.

In this case the writeruses a sociological approach because this approach is an approach whose understanding starts from the community to the individual and this is related to the problems raised by the writer in this research, this approach will help in approaching the problems that exist in the film that the writer will examine, namely about the conflicts that occur between the main characters and the outside world how conflicts can occur and how the main character place herself and behave in society then how the main character solve the conflicts.

23Fritz H.S Danamik. (2013). MembentangFaktaDuniaSosials(SOSIOLOGI) , Jakarta: PT. BumiAksara, p. 168-169 15

NyomanKutha Ratna said in his book than

"Pendekatansosiologismenganalisismanusiadalammasyarakat, dengan proses pemahamanmulaidarimasyarakatkeindividu".24It means that sociological approach has a method implicating like understanding of human life to the society the process of identifying sociological approach begin with assumption which there is a reciprocal relationship between a self individual and society. The individuals influences to society through the actions of individuals there by creating groups, organizations, networks, and institutions.

Leo Lowenthal stated: "we learn both the nature of society and the ways individuals experienced it, through the fictional characters that see and recite not only reality around them, but their hopes, wishes, dreams, and fantasies".25It means that the sociology approach examines things related to the wish of the dreams of dreamer and imaginary imagination reflected in the main character of the film like Diana's character in the Wonder Woman film by Patty Jenkins who has a desire to create a good relationship between one community and another without war.She also dreams and fantasizes about a world of peace that is far away from the influence of Ares the god of war who will only cause destruction.

Based on explanation above, in analyzing the impacts and strategies in overcoming conflicts by the main character in Wonder Woman film the writer uses the sociological approach. It means the contents of literally work related to the social problems and conflict that appears in the film.

2.3 Review of Related Research

The writer is the first research in English Literature Departement of Adab and Humanities Faculty The State University Islamic Studies Sulthan Thaha

Saifuddin Jambi, who wants to analyze about the role of ego toward main character as seen in Wonder Woman filmby Patty Jenkins

First, the student from English Department, Brawijaya University, in 2013.

She is Dwi Yunita Sari with the tittle „‟A Study on the Main Character‟s

Internal and External Conflicts in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

Movie”.26This researcher analyzed about (1) how the main character‟s internal conflicts happen in the story (2) how the main character‟s external conflicts happen in the story. This study uses a psychological approach to analyze and interpret data. This study uses a qualitative approach to describe the events clearly and systematically.

The result of this study shows that Oskar, the main character of the movie Extremely

Loud and Incredibly Close, reaches his satisfaction because he successfully gets his wants after he faces conflicts in his life. For the next researchers, it is recommended for students majoring on literature to analyze the character‟s conflicts from psychoanalysis point of view.

Second, the student from English Language and Letter Deparment Faculty of

Humanities, State Islamic University Malang, 2016. He is Ahmad Syaufanwith the tittle “Analysis of Conflicts Faced by Two Characters the Virgin Suicide„s

JefreyEugenides.”27This thesis discusses about analysis of the conflicts faced by the Lisbon girl as the main character that have the conflicts. Completing this study

P. 12 17

the researcher has questions that appear to discuss are: 1. What are the conflicts that are encountered by the Lisbon girls in the novel “the Virgin Suicides”? 2.

How do the Lisbon girls solve their conflict in the novel “the Virgin

Suicides”?The researcher uses Jone‟s theory for knowing the type of conflict faced by the Lisbon girls as the main characters have conflict. Till lead them to do suicide, it must have a causes that appearing the suicide case.

Third, the student from English Literature Department Faculty of Letters,

University of North Sumatera 2009. She is HerminaNapitupulu with the tittle

“An Analysisis of The Main Character‟s Conflicts in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s

Novel28”. This research focuses on the things that will be discussed are the internal and external conflicts faced by the characters in the novel the scarlet letter appointed by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Chapter I of this thesis include a description of literature which is equipped with background problems, objectives of the study, limitations of the discussion, and research methods used. Chapter II presents novel concepts, character concepts and concepts of conflict. The research method used is explained in chapter III, while the analysis of internal and external conflicts faced by the main actors in the novel is examined in chapter VI.

From the preview related research above, most of them analyze about conflictson the main character. The same points that this research with them are in the conflict theory and qualitative research, but, the different of this research with them is on the case, this research focuses on the impacts and strategies in

CHAPTER III

METHOD OF THE RESEARCH

2.3 Design of Research

In writing this thesis proposal, the writer uses descriptive qualitative research that is suitable with the aim of this research. Qualitative research may be in descriptive form. The data collects in the form of words as a descriptive explanation than a number. The result of the research contains quotation from the data to illustrate and substantive the presentation. Descriptive research is a research which aims to describe a phenomenon accurately based on the characteristic of research, where the data are analyzed through interpreting, not statistical analysis. According to Denzin and Lincoln define:

“Qualitative research is multi method in focus, involving an interpretive, naturalistic approach to its subject matter. This means that qualitative researchers study thing in their natural settings, attempting to make sense of or interpret phenomena in terms of the meanings people bring to them. Qualitative research involves the studied use and collection of a variety of empirical materials-case study, personal experience, introspective, life story, interview, observational, historical, interactional, and visual texts- that describe routine and problematic moments and meaning in individuals‟ lives.”29

From the quotation above qualitative research is a method in focus, naturalistic approach to it is subject matter. It means that qualitative researchers study thing in their natural settings, attempting to make sense of or interpret phenomena in terms of the meanings people bring to them. Descriptive Analysis is the transformation of raw data into a form that will make them easy to

29Denzin and Lincoln in John W. Creswell, Qualitative Inquiry And Research Design, ( of America: California, 1997), p. 15 20

understand and interpret; rearranging, ordering, and manipulating data to generate descriptive information30

It means that qualitative research is analyzing about descriptive data such as writer or spoken, at the person who is observed in this research, where qualitative research also analyzing about the data from outside which the data still not right.31 By using this qualitative research, the writer feels easy to analyze the film. Based on those statements, it can be concluded that qualitative research is analyzing about descriptive data that is collected is in the form of the situation of the natural object. Where descriptive data such as writer or spoken, by using qualitative research a researcher will have a rice answer about the question in analyzing the problem about the impacts and strategies in overcoming conflicts by the main character in the Wonder Woman film by Patty Jenkins.

2.4 Source of the Data

The source of the data in this research will be taken from the Wonder

Womanfilm. Thisfilm isdirected byPatty Jenkins this is a 2017 American superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. It is the fourth installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) with a screenplay by

Allan Heinberg, from a story by Heinberg,The writer will use the script and the scenes from the film to find out the impacts and strategies in overcoming conflicts by the main character in the Wonder Womanfilm by Patty Jenkins. So, the forms of the data are dialogues and pictures from Wonder Womanfilm.

2.5 Technique of Data Collection

In other get the information in this research, writer uses library research.

There are some techniques of data collecting likes: interviews, observations,

documentation. In this research, writer uses documentation technique to get the

data from Wonder Woman film. Sugiyono stated that “Dokumen merupakan

catatan peristiwa yang sudah berlalu. Dokumen bisa berbentuk tulisan, gambar

atau karya-karya monumental dari seseorang.”32 There are some steps of the

technique of the data collection that will be done by the writer in this research,

these are:

1. Downloading the Film

The writer downloads the Wonder Woman film by Patty Jenkins from Movie

21 Online.Com and takes the script from the subscane.com

2. Watching the Film Repeatedly

The writer watches the Wonder Woman film by Patty Jenkins repeatedly and

takes the scenes and dialogues that related to the research questions

3. Reading the Script and Marking the Sentences

The writer reads the script and marks the words or sentences that related to the

research questions a. Technique of Data Analysis

The writer had several techniques from the data analysis, in order to make this research more specific. In qualitative research, technique analysis the data, the

32Sugiyono, MetodePenelitianKuantitatifKualitatif, R& D, (Bandung: PustakaPelajar, 2009). P. 240 22

writer uses a technique of data analysis. In this thesis, the writer uses documentation technique descriptive analysis because this research is descriptive.

It is why the writer describes, analysis the data that had been found in the Wonder

Woman film by Patty Jenkins to find the answer the formulation of the problem that have been formulated. The steps of techniques of data analysis are:

1. Identifying and Classifying the Data

The writer identifies and classifies the data that related to the research

questions

2. Describing the Data

After the data are identified and classified, the writer describes the data based

on the research questions

3. Analyzing the Data

The writer analyzes the data based on theory of conflict which only focuses on

3 types of conflict and conflict resolution

4. Making the Conclusion

After all the data have been described and analyzed the writer makes the

conclusion of the research.

CHAPTER IV

FINDING ANALYSIS

This chapter represents the finding and analysis of the data. In this chapter, the writer wants to analyze the conflicts that faced by the main characters and the impacts of conflicts on the main character as seen in the Wonder Woman film by

Patty Jenkins.

After describing the conflicts and the impacts of the conflicts on the main character in Wonder Woman film, the writer would like to show what are the strategies used by the main character to solve the conflicts.

4.1 The conflicts faced by the main character as seen in Wonder Woman film

by Patty Jenkins.

The writer finds that there are three conflicts that faced by the main character in the Wonder Woman film by Patty Jenkins it can be seen in the explanations below:

4.1.1 Intra Personal Conflict

Intra personal conflict: is the conflict which occur within an individualas a result of frustration they feel with themselves over their personal goals, targets, plans, or accomplishment, or as a result of competing values and questions of consciences. The seriousness of an intrapersonal conflict can range from not being able to make up princess Diana‟s mind over whether to practice to fight so that she can be stronger to protect herself and those around her or must follow what her mother said to becomes a princess who lives like most princess in general. It can be seen from the pictures and dialogues below: 24

picture33

The picture above is a snippet of the scene that shows that Princess Diana is watching aunty when training other warriors to fight. Princess Diana followed the movements like the other warriors did from a distance. From this scene the writer found that there was a great desire from a princess Diana to be able to practice fighting like other warriors. But he could not lightly join in because his mother did not give her permission to practice fighting like other warriors. It can be seen from the dialogues below:

Queen Hippolyta : There wiil be no training, it‟s time to sleep Princess Diana :what if I promise to be careful? What if I did not use a sword? Queen Hippolyta : Fighting does not make you a hero34

The dialogue above shows that Princess Diana's mother, who is a queen on

Amazon Island did not give permission for Princess Diana to practice being a great soldier who can use swords and can fight bravely queen Hippolyta strongly disagrees with Princess's wishes. Princess Diana had tried to convince her mother that she would be careful when practicing and she also promised not to get hurt

33Wonder Woman film, duration: 00:03:46,049 00:04:21,334 34Wonder Woman film, duration: 00:03:46,049 00:04:21,334 25

and not use swords but the Queen of Hippolyta still did not allowPrincessDiana to practice on the grounds that fighting would not make Princess Diana a hero.

Princess Diana was so eager to be a great warrior by practicing while her mother did not give her permission to be what she wanted to be and this was one of the intra-personal conflicts faced by the main character where she felt disappointed at her failure to convince her mother that she must practice fighting.

Picture35

The picture above is a snippet of the scene which shows that there Princess

Diana was practicing fighting with the aunty and she lost control so she felt cornered by an aunty attack until she finally felt angry and unconsciously wounded aunty. Here the writer found that after injuring aunty princess diana feel guilty and considered herself so careless she was disappointed that her ambition to become a great soldier had hurt aunty.

(Princess Diana‟s Monologue) what had I done? I am sorry36

35Wonder Woman film, duration: 00:13:27,90300:14:25,951 26

Princess Diana Monologue explains that Princess Diana feels very guilty for what she has done. She did not expect that her desire to become a Wonder

Woman had caused other people to be hurt. She was annoyed with herself who felt she failed to become a princess who should be able to protect the people around her. but instead herself caused the people around him to get hurt and this is the intra personal conflict faced by princess Diana.

4.1.2 Inter Personal Conflict

Inter personal conflict: is the conflict that take place between two individuals, which reoccur on a regular basis during their relationship. For example, include conflict between couples in relationship, between superiors and subordinates in a work context, between students and teachers or professors, or between representatives of two or more cultural groups.

In this case Princess Diana is in conflict with her mother. Her mother always arranged for Diana that whatever Diana would do had to go through her agreement first but Princess Diana began to act as she wanted she began to feel that what her mother said was very contrary to what she wanted until finally the conflict arose between Diana and her mother. It can be seen in the picture below:

36Wonder Woman film, duration: 00:14:24,69900:14:29,225 27

Picture37

The picture above is a snippet of the scene which shows that in this duration of the scene Princess Diana tried asking her mother's permission so that her mother immediately released the pilot who was stranded on her island and sent him or several Amazon soldiers to go with Steve Trevor to help him complete world war and reconcile the world but Queen Hippolyta did not allowed instead challenged Diana's desire to help and get out of Amazon with Steve Trevor.

Queen Hippolyta would let Steve Trevor free but Princess Diana could not come with him Queen Hippolyta thought that the war outside the Amazon was not the business for the Amazon people. It can be seen in dialogues below:

Queen Hippolyta : I will not deploy our army and leave them scare Defenses to go and fight their war Princess Diana : It‟s not their war! Zeus created human to be Just, wise and strong and passionate Queen Hippolyta : That was a story, Diana! This too much, you do not understand? Men are easily corrupted Princess Diana : Yes, but Ares is behind that corruption! It is Ares who has theseGermans fightingand stopping the God of waris our fore-ordinance.As Amazons this is our duty.

37Wonder Woman film, duration: 00:28:08,17500:29:04,910 28

Queen Hippolyta :But you're not an Amazonlike the rest of us.So you willdo nothing. As your queen I forbid38

The dialogues above show that Queen Hippolyta was very angry at

Princess Diana's request to join Steve Trevor out of Amazon she did not accept any reason to give Princess Diana permission to leave Amazon. From here the writer found that the conflict continued until finally Princess Diana made a defense that the war that was happening out there was her responsibility as the daughter of Amazon because Zeus had created her as a human and she was responsible for stopping the war caused by Ares. Princess Diana believed that the war out there was the deed of Ares the war god who was eager to destroy all humans, so Diana insisted on going out of the Amazon to stop the war but Queen

Hippolyta persisted with her stance she told Diana that the war was due to human is indeed a destroyer because of that the war continues and the Princess Diana refutes with the statement that Ares is behind all the damage Ares is what caused humans to be evil and Ares who pitted sheep so that everyone fought each other,

Queen Hippolyta was very angry and left Princess Diana was followed by another soldier with an angry look. While Diana remained standing there watching Queen

Hippolyta pass with her hands grasping and with a look full of disappointment and anger.

4.1.3 Intra Society Conflict

Intra society conflicts or social conflicts most often refer to conflicts of a larger scale that have a strong public resonance. This type of conflict is very much associated with power and competition. As with conflicts between countries that

38Wonder Woman film, duration: 00:28:32,595 00:29:07,078 29

occur in this film. Here Princess Diana had to face a conflict that took place between 27 countries or World War 1 this war was a large-scale conflict faced by

Princess Diana this conflict caused a lot of losses. It can be seen in the dialogues below:

Steve Trevor : But if I can get these notes back to the British Intelligence in time it could stop millions more from dying, It could stop the war. Princess Diana :War? What war? Steve Trevor : The War. The war to end all wars.Four years 27 countries 25 million dead soldiers and civiliansInnocent peoplewomen andchildren slaughteredTheir homes and their villageslooted and burned weapons far dead linethan you canever imagineIt’s like nothingI've ever seen. It's like the worldgonna end.39

From the dialogues above can see that the Pilot Steve Trevor was being interrogated by Amazon people and he told princess Diana and others that there was a big war out there involving many countries. If this war was not immediately stopped, there would be more victims even the world will be destroyed. Princess Diana was so worried when she heard the news brought by

Steve Trevor. It can be seen in the picture below:

Picture40

39Wonder Woman film, duration: 00:27:32,595 00:28:07,078 40Wonder Woman film, duration: 00:28:32,595 00:29:07,078 30

The picture above is a snippet of the scene in the Wonder Woman film where in this scene Princess Diana looks very worried about the war that happened outside Amazon. In this scene can be seen that Princess Diana passed by several other soldiers to be able to stand near to the queen Hippolyta and talk about the war she had to help.here could be seen that the large scale war conflict was a conflict that made Princess Diana so worried and this was an example of intra society conflict faced by the main character.

4.2 The Impacts of the Conflicts on the Main Character in Wonder Woman

Film by Patty Jenkins.

The writerfound that there are two impacts that occur from various types of conflicts faced by the main character the impacts are negative impacts and positive impacts. It can be seen in the explanations below:

4.2.1 Positive Impacts

Positive impact of the conflict is often referred to as a function of conflict, affirming that social conflict also has consequences that contribute to a society or system. In this film there are some positive impacts that the writer found from the various conflicts faced by the main character. It can be seen in the explanations below:

4.2.1.1 increased internal solidarity and in-group integration

Conflicts can increase awareness and solidarity between groups to unite. In this case when Princess Diana and her group were about to go to the center of the war but they passed the VELD area which was also going on a war 31

there. Diana intended to help them and invited her group to participate but all people in her group refused her invitation. It can be seen in the dialogues below:

Steve Trevor : Diana we have to go! Princess Diana : We need to help these people Steve Trevor : We have to stay on mission….! Princess Diana : So what? So we do nothing? Steve Trevor : We can't save everyone in this war. Princess Diana : Steve... Steve Trevor : This is not what we came here to do. Princess Diana : …. but it's what I'm going to do.41

From the dialogues above can see that Steve Trevor refused Diana's wish to help the people trapped in war at VELD Steve tried to convince Diana that it was not their mission to come to that place but Diana still went to VELD to help people there even without working with the group. And in the end the group still helped Diana to the battlefield even though their lives became bets because their awareness and solidarity as a group they must unite to resolve conflicts that arise from outside their group. It can be seen in the picture below:

picture42

41Wonder Woman Film, Duration: 01:12:58,665  01:14:16,782 42Wonder Woman 01:14:16,782 32

The picture above is a snippet of the scene which shows that Steve Trevor

and the others came to help Diana on the battlefield even though at first they

refused to join because they felt they would not be able to save themselves from

death if they jumped into VELD but as members of their group aware that they

must be together to deal with the conflicts they face because that is why they

become aware that mutual safety is the first and they must unite to resolve

conflicts that arise from out there. They must not be selfish andmust work

together because of this conflict their sense of solidarity as group members is

increasing.

4.2.1.2Conflict with certain groups will lead to an interesting relationship between groups with each other

Some groups will establish cooperative relationships when dealing with conflicts to make it easier for them to resolve a conflict. Just like Princess Diana and the others because of the war conflict involving many countries so they joined in the same group as people who came from different groups it could be seen in the picture below:

picture43

43Wonder Woman Film, Duration: 01:12:58,665  01:14:16,782 33

The picture above is a snippet of the scene which shows that Princess

Diana went with Steve Trevor to join Steve Trevor's group from England to deal with a war conflict involving 27 countries outside the Amazon. Princess Diana, who is part of the Amazon group, is willing to join Steve Trevor who is a member of a group from England. They did this because of the conflict they had to face and because of this conflict their group came together. Queen Hippolyta who is the princess Diana's mother allowed Diana to join the other Group and went with

Steve Trevor because she knew that cooperation between groups in the same mission would make the conflict easier to deal with. It can be seen in the dialogues below:

Princess Diana : I am going mother Queen Hippolyta :….Be careful in theworld of men, Diana. They do not deserve you.You have been my greatest love.44

From the dialogues above can see that Princess Diana's mother allowed

Diana to go and join other groups to help the war that happened outside the

Amazon even though a little heavy hearted. princess Diana‟s mother advised

Diana to be careful with men because Diana was her favourite daughter and men may not make it broken. From here can see that conflict can unite several groups together.

4.2.2 Negative Impacts

Negative Impact of the conflict are often referred to as conflict dysfunction. Conflicts are considered to be detrimental and threaten the unity of a group or society. It can be seen in the explanations below:

44Wonder Woman film, duration: 00:36:44,420  00:38:09,519 34

4.2.2.1 Damage to Property and loss of human life

Conflicts can be very detrimental, such as damage to property and loss of human life, Princess Diana lost her aunty who was killed when they were attacked by French people who arrived suddenly to Amazon. From this conflict they lost a lot of lives and even the life of the war general in the Amazon, Antyope. It can be seen in the Dialogues and picture below:

Princess Diana : No…… Antiope, Antiope, No… Antiope : Diana….Dianaa…you must go, go…..45

The picture and dialogues above are scenes showing that Antyope was shot and lay in Diana's lap. Antiope finally lost her life Antiopedeath because of protecting Diana from one of the French soldiers who tried to steer the gun to

Diana until finally Antiope volunteered to be Diana's shield and died right then.

From here it can see that the negative impact of the conflict is truly detrimental to the conflict can make people injured even able to make people lose their lives.

45Wonder Woman, duration: 00:31:58,58900:36:15,288 35

4.2.2.2 Breaking of Relationship between individuals and group unity

Another negative impact on the main character of was to destroy the relationship between main character and her mother. The conflict between themwas making Princess Diana leave Amazon at night without knowing by her mother. It can be seen in the pictures below:

\ picture46

The picture above is a snippet of scene that shows Princess Diana and

Steve Trevor were negotiating that they would go by boat on the island at night without Queen Hippolyta's knowledge. Princess Diana decides to go quietly because her mother never allows her to leave and she is always angry with her if

Princess Diana intends to do what according to Diana is able to do it like kill Ares and stop the world war but her mother never believed it and she always trying to block Diana out of Amazon even her mother didn't say that Steve Trevor might get out of Amazon. Because of this conflict, Princess Diana finally decided to leave Amazon secretly. It can be seen in the dialogues below:

46Wonder Woman, duration: 00:31:58,58900:36:15,288 36

Princess Diana :I even asked them to send me with you, or anyone, the but my mother did not allow me to do that, now I'll show you theway off the Island and you will take me to Ares? Steve Trevor : Deal, I am leaving on that… Princess Diana : we are! Steve Trevor : Yeah, we are leaving on that….47

From the dialogues above can see that Princess Diana told Steve Trevor that she had tried talking to her mother to free Steve Trevor to even ask that she or other soldiers could go with Steve Trevor but her mother as a queen in the

Amazon was angry and said that no one could leave Amazon. From the dialogues above, writer found that Princess Diana accidentally told Steve Trevor how to get out of Amazon so Steve Trevor also took her. That's why Princess Diana first made Steve Trevor promise that Steve would take her to Ares if she showed the way out of the island and Steve agreed.

4.3 The Strategies used by the main character to solve the conflicts as seen in

Wonder Woman film by Patty Jenkins

In this case the writer found that there are some strategies that used by the main character to solve the conflicts in the Wonder Woman film by Patty Jenkins.

It can be seen in the explanations below:

4.3.1 Avoiding Conflict

Princess Diana did not get approval from her mother when she wanted to practice fighting with Antiope because of that Diana had a conflict with her mother who always forbade her to practice fighting, Diana had convinced her

47 Wonder Woman, duration: 00:32:07,992 00:36:07,767 37

mother in various ways so that she could practice immediately but her mother still forbade her to do so in the end Diana uses avoiding strategies to launch her plans and to resolve conflicts with her mother. Diana chose to avoid the problem by practicing secret warfare with her mother would not know and would not be angry with her anymore. It can be seen in the dialogues and pictures below:

Picture 48

The picture above is a snippet of the scene that shows that Princess Diana was in a cave and practicing with Antiope in secret and princess Diana also practiced riding with great agility without her mother know and finally this strategy succeeded in making Diana able to resolve her conflict with her mother.

Even his mother never knew that Diana could ride horse like other warriors. Even after the adult Princess Diana her mother still did not know that Diana could ride a horse. It can be seen in the dialogue below:

Queen Hippolyta: But you're not an Amazonlike the rest of us49

From the dialogue above can see that Princess Diana‟s mother or Queen

Hippolyta forbid Diana from leaving Amazon to kill Ares the god of war because

48Wonder Woman film, duration: 00:06:20,60500:08:45,044 49Wonder Woman film, duration: 00:28:59,591  00:29:02,974 38

according to her mother Diana is not the same as other Amazon warriors maybe she has strength but she can't ride a horse from here can see that Princess Diana managed to make her mother not know that she was actually able to ride a horse from a young age because she practiced riding in silence with Antiope who had died first

4.3.2 Getting Help

Princess Diana and Steve Trevor will go to battle in their mission to resolve conflicts that occur on the battlefield but the conflict involves thousands of people with complete weapons. Princess Diana and Steve Trevor thought that it would be difficult to win if only the two of them went to the battlefield because of that Princess Diana and Steve Trevor was looking for a strategy for that.

Finally Princess Diana decided to ask for help from other parties who were willing to launch their mission. It can be seen in the pictures and dialogues below:

picture50

The picture above is a snippet of the scene which shows that Princess

Diana was unsure of Steve Trevor that he would take her to the battlefield because of that Steve Trevor was angry and tried to convince Princess Diana to stretch the

50Wonder Woman film, duration: 00:59:55,484 01:00:26,513 39

honesty rope to his arm so that Princess Diana believed but Steve Trevor said that they can't go because they need reinforcements. It can be seen in the dialoguebelow:

Steve Trevor : We are probably gonna die This is a terrible ideaWe‟re gonna need reinforcements51

The dialogue above shows that Steve Trevor tried to convince Princess

Diana that they would soon go to battle after they got help because he thinksthat going alone was a crazy idea and they could have come there to die. They finally looked for people who could help them. It can be seen in the picture and dialogues below:

Steve Trevor : That's Charlie Charlie : Steve! May god grow a flowerupon your head sonGood to see you Sameer :So, what's the job, boss? Steve Trevoe : Two days tops, We need supplies andpassage to Belgium Sameer :What's the going rate? Steve Trevor : Better be a good pay It's for a great cause, freedom, friendship, and ending the war, friendship Sameer : okay

51Wonder Woman film, duration: 01:00:14,961 01:00:26,513 40

The pictures and dialogues above are a snippet of scene which shows that

Princess Diana and Steve Trevor are in a Bar to meet Charlie and Sameer who will help them. From the dialogues can see that Steve Trevor was asking for

Charlie and Sameer for approval to help Steve go to the battlefield, Sameer initially refused because there was no payment in the form of money but at the end Sameer wanted to help because his pay was friendship, freedom and independence.

41

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

5.1 Conclusion

Based on the finding analysis in the chapter four, the writer concludes:

There are three Type of conflicts faced by the Main character in the Wonder

Woman film by Patty Jenkins such as: Intra personal conflict where princess

Diana not being able to make up her mind over whether to practice to fight so that she can be stronger to protect herself and those around her or must follow what her mother said to becomes a princess who lives like most princess in general. inter personal conflict where Princess Diana is in conflict with her mother. Her mother always arranged for Diana that whatever Diana would do had to go through her agreement first but Princess Diana began to act as she wanted she began to feel that what her mother said was very contrary to what she wanted until finally the conflict arose between Diana and her mother and intra society conflict where Princess Diana had to face a conflict that took place between 27 countries or World War 1 this war was a large-scale conflict faced by Princess Diana this conflict caused a lot of losses.

There are two impacts that occur from various types of conflicts faced by the main character the impacts are negative impacts and positive impacts where the negative princess Diana‟s aunty lost her life, breaking of relationship between individuals princess Diana and her mother breaking their relationship between mother and daughter for a while because of conflict and the positive impact are increased internal solidarity and in-group integration like princess Diana and 42

Steve Trevor do in a battlefield. Conflict with certain groups will lead to an interesting relationship between groups with each other,Some groups will establish cooperative relationships when dealing with conflicts to make it easier for them to resolve a conflict. Just like Princess Diana and the others because of the war conflict involving many countries so they joined in the same group as people who came from different group

There some strategies that Princess Dina used in solved the conflict such as: Avoiding conflict where Princess Diana did not get approval from her mother when she wanted to practice fighting with Antiope because of that Diana had a conflict with her mother who always forbade her to practice fighting, Diana had convinced her mother in various ways so that she could practice immediately but her mother still forbade her to do so in the end Diana uses avoiding strategies to launch her plans and to resolve conflicts with her mother. Getting help, where

Princess Diana and Steve Trevor thought that it would be difficult to win if only the two of them went to the battlefield because of that Princess Diana and Steve

Trevor was looking for a strategy for that. Finally Princess Diana decided to ask for help from other parties who were willing to launch their mission.

5.2 Suggestion

Based on the analysis in this research, there are some suggestions related to this research:

This film is very interesting to watch, becauseThis film tells about a woman who grew up as a princess on a remote island who was isolated but was able to stop the first world war involving 27 countries, the female figure in this film was very inspiring that with strong desire and perseverance and the belief that she could doing what other people think she can't afford even in the end she can make the world peaceful without war. There are many things the researcher can analyze from this film, such as about conflict that faced by the main character what is the impacts of the conflict on the main character and how the strategies used by the main character to solve the conflict.

The writer hopes that the other researcher can continue the research about

Feminism because this film is also talk about the feminism in this film can see that a struggle of a woman to be a leader in battlefield in world War I and its related to feminism in Wonder Woman film by Patty Jenkins REFERENCES
