Alpine World Ski Championships 2001 St. Anton Support and Services provided by the ÖBB

On 11 May 1996 St. Anton was chosen by FIS to host the World Championships 2001 - > negotiations started to revive a project from the 1970s for relocating the existing railway line from the centre of the village to the outskirts - > bringing an end to century-old division of the village into 2 parts by the railway - > to relieve the village from the noise impact of the railway traffic - > to give space to the development of a new village centre Finally, ÖBB contributed to the world ski championships by

relocating the railway line to the south, opposite the village, with a new railway station clearing the area of the existing station and tracks through the village to give room to facilities required for the organisation of the championships (press centre, etc.) preparing a temporary halt east of St. Anton at a provisional car park area at the S16 expressway and providing regular shuttle trains providing special daily railway passenger services for visitors from Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Italy

Key features of the infrastructure project - > from 1997 – 2001 all permit procedures were passed and the project was realised - > approx. 130 million € invested into the new railway infrastructure - > improving operational safety by bypassing avalanche and debris flow hazard zones - > a state-of-the-art railway infrastructure was established Without the drive of the championships, the project would not have been realised at that time and not so quickly. St. Anton gained area of the existing station for the temporary facilities required for the organisation of the championships (press centre, etc.) free space in the centre of the village for a sustainable development of the village and the touristic infrastructure noise protection

Daily trains from Bregenz / Bludenz to St. Anton were operated for spectators coming from Germany and Switzerland.

In addition, other railway companies, e.g. from Switzerland, operated daily trains to carry spectators to the championship in St. Anton (Bodensee-Toggenburgbahn, 600 passengers per train).

Trains were operated every half hour in compliance with the event schedules.

Train tickets also included the entrance to the competitions.

Alpine World Ski Championships 2001 St. Anton Special Passenger Rail Services provided by the ÖBB Lessons learned by the ÖBB:

train services must be offered at half-hour intervals to assure capacities demanded by the passengers

combination of train + event tickets promotes the use of the rail services

twice as much visitors used the rail services than were expected by the ÖBB

services had to be extended to allow visitors to enjoy the night life in St. Anton – the last shuttle trains left at 02:30 a.m. every day

the ÖBB team in St. Anton had to be very flexible and adopt the train schedules in compliance with delays or adjustments of the competition times (due to changing weather conditions) and unexpected alterations in passenger demands Seite 12 Alpine World Ski Championships 2001 St Anton Mag. Alpine World Ski Championships 2001 St. Anton Special Passenger Rail Services provided by the ÖBB Results of the spectator satisfaction evaluation study by the Management Center Innsbruck published in March 2005:

The championships in St. Anton were a real spectator magnet attracting much more visitors than the championships in St. Moritz 2003 and Bormio 2005. 52% of the visitors were day tourists (St. Moritz and Bormio 41%) due to the good accessibility of St. Anton. Easy arrival, attractive atmosphere at the events and a perfect organisation were explicitly identified by spectators as key factors for a satisfactory event. 45% of the visitors voted “very good” for St. Anton.

The easy accessibility of St. Anton by train attracted many spectators; it was the key factor (61%) for them to come; 115,000 came for the first time. The modern appearance of the new station as well as the timetables suiting the visitors’ needs were identified as success factors.

7 Alpine World Ski Championships 2001 St. Anton Special Passenger Rail Services provided by the ÖBB St. Anton received bad marks only for the criterion „car parking areas“:

Due to the limited space in the village and at the outskirts, parking for private cars and busses had to be restricted

To assure availability of sufficient car and bus park facilities, a temporary car and bus parking area was established in Schnann 10 km east of St. Anton where the railway line runs parallel in short distance to the S16 Arlberg express way. The area was designed for 1540 cars and 190 busses.

Temporary access roads to the S16 Arlberg express way assured direct connection with the expressway avoiding congestions on the road network Along the railway line, a temporary halt with platforms L=250m was constructed; shuttle trains served the car park at half hour intervals. Although easily accessible, the car park was never fully occupied; obviously visitors would have preferred car parks closer to the village; however, this could not be provided due to the lack of space Seite 15 Alpine World Ski Championships 2001 St Anton Mag. 8 Alpine World Ski Championships 2001 St. Anton Special Passenger Rail Services provided by the ÖBB Conclusions: the infrastructure investments for the relocation of the railway line to the outskirts of St. Anton were a basis for a successful implementation of the championships by offering attractive rail passenger services, ÖBB was able to attract a significant share of visitors due to the good accessibility of the events by train, more day tourists could be attracted

the cooperation between the organisation committee of the championships and ÖBB was successful The temporary car park area outside St. Anton was less attractive to visitors than anticipated, even though a suitable shuttle train service was provided With the support and services provided during the championships, the ÖBB helped St. Anton to present itself as a trend-setting and very attractive ski resort and event community Seite 17 Alpine World Ski Championships 2001 St Anton Mag.
