In spite of the sheer number of Hindi films released each year (150-200) and the increasing importance of audiences in countries such as the U.S., we know little, if anything, about audience motivations, viewing practices and consumption patterns. Suggesting we take the familiar seriously, this project's primary goal is to serve as an inaugural act that will map key coordinates of the space that Hindi cinema and its transnational audience occupies. This research project is designed to examine viewing practices and interpretations of Hindi films among a small sample of ten Indian immigrant families drawn from two different social positions - (a) the educated, professional and affluent class (doctors, scientists, software professionals, consultants, etc.), and (b) less educated, working class (owners and employees of grocery & convenience stores, gas stations, motels & restaurants, etc.). Given the complexity of the issue of class in general, and especially its intersections with caste, religion, and other variables in the Indian context, the findings in this study will be treated not so much as a class-based comparison of reception, but instead as an attempt to situate reception in a social and historical context that is marked by profound differences in access to privilege at the local, national and transnational levels. In addition, operating with the family as the research site allows this comparative frame to investigate similarities and differences based on gender and generation. Drawing on the tradition of using ethnographic techniques to analyze media reception (in this case, participant-observation and in-depth interviews), this project hopes to establish popular culture as a crucial site for exploring how identities are communicatively constituted in the Indian diaspora. Arguing that cinema viewing constitutes one of the most culturally visible arenas of activity in the Indian diaspora, a topic that is just beginning to attract scholarly attention, this project's larger goal is to serve as a starting point for larger debates and contests over several contentious issues that reveal anxieties of Indian immigrants from diverse social positions. CUT TO: [Words the Screen (sound of Apu's fingers on the keyboard)] A little less than four years ago, Swami and I found ourselves waiting in line outside the U.S Consulate in Chennai, India. As we waited our turn to submit visa applications, our thoughts turned to life as a graduate student in the U.S. The thought of leaving behind all that we knew and loved disturbed us. We knew a lot of people - friends and relatives - studying or working in different parts of North America who had sent us countless emails about fast food joints, their cheap first cars, road trips, strip clubs, music bands, and other fun things. So we weren't particularly worried about adjusting to life there; as Swami said, how wrong could we go after having spent years consuming Archie comics, TIME magazine, and countless Hollywood action movies?

He has wielded the baton additionally for 4 films made by other film companies - JOSHILA (1973), DEEWAAR (1975), TRISHUL (1978) & PARAMPARA (1993). But his greatest repertoire of work were the 50 plus films made under the banner that he launched - the banner that stands for the best of Hindi cinema - YRF. Out of these films, he directed 13 himself and these films have defined much of the language of Hindi films as we know them today.

Received: June 23 , 2018 Accepted: August 03, 2018 Introduction: Cinephilia Cineastes say that films help the audience to reflect on the divergent cultures and justify the presence of multi-cultural, multi-ethnic audience in view of this divergence. The language of cinema continues to evolve in a living tradition and the filmmakers trace the ever-changing language of this medium from the silent era to the talkies, from the days when screen went from black and white and got colorized. Emotional appeal, subtlety in its communication and most importantly throwing a new light on the world, as we know it counted a lot to the audience. Filmmakers now work across the spectrum of media including painting, novels, theatre and opera. In the global cinema, in general, the production has become more accessible today, the qualitative aspects have sadly given way to quantity and so, films often miss emotional and spiritual richness. The world is a closer place today. Perhaps it is cinema that helps to blur the boundaries. The concept of film as a commercial art form started in fifties. The fifties and sixties are generally known as the golden period of Indian cinema not only because masterpieces were being made, but because of the popularity of the songs of that era. One of the distinctive features of Indian cinema is its narrative structure.

    Clare M. Wilkinson-Weber TAILORING EXPECTATIONS How film costumes become the audience’s clothes ‘Bollywood’ film costume has inspired clothing trends for many years. Female consumers have managed their relation to film costume through negotiations with their tailor as to how film outfits can be modified. These efforts have coincided with, and reinforced, a semiotic of female film costume where eroticized Indian clothing, and most forms of western clothing set the vamp apart from the heroine. Since the late 1980s, consumer capitalism in India has flourished, as have films that combine the display of material excess with conservative moral values. New film costume designers, well connected to the fashion industry, dress heroines in lavish Indian outfits and western clothes; what had previously symbolized the excessive and immoral expression of modernity has become an acceptable marker of global cosmopolitanism. Material scarcity made earlier excessive costume display difficult to achieve. The altered meaning of women’s costume in film corresponds with the availability of ready-to-wear clothing, and the desire and ability of costume designers to intervene in fashion retailing. Most recently, as the volume and diversity of commoditised clothing increases, designers find that sartorial choices ‘‘on the street’’ can inspire them, as they in turn continue to shape consumer choice. Introduction Film’s ability to stimulate consumption (responding to, and further stimulating certain kinds of commodity production) has been amply explored in the case of Hollywood (Eckert, 1990; Stacey, 1994). Through representation, media helps in constructing and reproducing gender identities. The representation of how women are constructed by the media has travelled due to globalization. The 2006 Global Media Monitoring Project reveals that women are under-represented in news. The media are therefore construed as constructing gender subjectivity. For example, women are literally absent in news, politics and economics and hardly ever appear as spokespersons or as field experts. These subjective representations are often framed though the lenses of the media producers and are influenced by the political economy of the media. Media are therefore seen as representing a distorted version of women. Gallagher (2004), however states that in South Africa, the process of changing gender in the newsroom has started and media audiences, texts and institutions have changed, largely due to the persistent gender advocacy. Based on this, this paper sets out to investigate how Indian women are represented in a South African newspaper targeted at a cross-national ethnic readership.
