A main game changer in this field are the technologies of retro propulsion assisted landing, which is a concept of decelerating the vehicle during its return to ground by firing its engines against the velocity vector. To foster a cost-efficient and sustainable global and European launcher market there is not only an urgent need to build up the necessary know-how on state-of-the-art Vertical Take-off Vertical Landing (VTVL) Two Stage To Orbit (TSTO) concepts, but also to go beyond this approach. -

Launius and Aaron K. Gillette, and published by NASA as Monographs in Aerospace History, Number 1 in December 1992 (available online at http://history.nasa.gov/Shuttlebib/contents.html). The Launius/Gillette volume contains those works published between the early days of the United States’ manned spaceflight program in the 1970s through 1991. The articles included in the first volume were judged to be most essential for researchers writing on the Space Shuttle’s history. The current (second) volume is intended as a follow-on to the first volume. It includes key articles, books, hearings, and U.S. government publications published on the Shuttle between 1992 and the end of the Shuttle program in 2011. The material is arranged according to theme, including: general works, precursors to the Shuttle, the decision to build the Space Shuttle, its design and development, operations, and management of the Space Shuttle program. Other topics covered include: the Challenger and Columbia accidents, as well as the use of the Space Shuttle in building and servicing the Hubble Space Telescope and the International Space Station; science on the Space Shuttle; commercial and military uses of the Space Shuttle; and the Space Shuttle’s role in international relations, including its use in connection with the Soviet Mir space station. -

Kennedy Sept. 12, 1962 he John F. Kennedy Space Center -- America’s Spaceport -- is the doorway to space. From its unique facilities, humans and machines begin Tto explore the solar system, reaching out to the sun, the moon, the planets and beyond. While these spectacular achievements fire the imagination of people throughout the world and enrich the lives of millions, they represent only a beginning. At America’s Spaceport, humanity’s long-cherished dream of establishing permanent outposts on the new space frontier is becoming a reality. Origins Yet, our leap toward the stars also is an epilogue to a rich and colorful past . an almost forgotten legacy replete with Indian lore, stalwart adventurers, sunken treasure and hardy pioneers. The sands of America’s Spaceport bear the imprint of New World history from its earliest beginnings. Long before people in modern times erected steel and concrete sentinels, the spaceport was inhabited by dusky-skinned hunters -- the Paleo people -- who crossed the continent from Asia by way of the frozen Bering Sea about 12,000 to 20,000 years ago. When Christopher Columbus landed at San Salvador Island in the Bahamas in the 15th century, the cape area was home to the fierce and often cannibalistic Ais and Timucuan Indians. Origins By the middle 1800s, these aboriginal tribes had virtually disappeared. -
