PREREQUISITES: ( and ) is open to juniors and seniors. Successful completion of minimum two years of , one being Chemistry or Physics is required. The course meets both the U.C. lab science (d) requirement and the SUHSD graduation requirement. This course is recommended for all students who have a body and are interested in knowing how it works and keeping it healthy. Also students interested in any career in the broad spectrum of ‘ services’ would benefit from this course.

CURIOSITY & CREATIVITY: In Human Biology class we ask “Why?” and “Why not?” about our bodies. You are encouraged to ask questions and come up creative answers based on evidence. LEADERSHIP & RESPONSIBILITY: In this class you will be asked to make your own decisions and accept responsibility for those choices. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Human Biology is the study of Human Anatomy (structure) and Physiology (). This course includes detailed discussion of all body systems and their interrelationships in health and . Class discussions are supplemented by regular reading in the textbook and enriched with additional selected readings. This course includes laboratory activities and of relevant —the is the primary animal model for dissection in this class due to its similarity to the human (comparative anatomy). CURRICULAR REQUIREMENTS: Textbook: Introduction to the Human Body the essentials of anatomy and physiology. By Tortora and Derrickson, 7th ed., John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 2007 There will be supplemental readings and materials provided by the instructor.

REQUIRED MATERIALS: The following materials MUST be brought to class EVERY DAY. 1. Planner 2. Three ring binder, with at least 3 dividers and lined notebook paper. (can be shared with other classes) 3. Binder pocket or pencil case for storage of items 4 and 5 recommended 4. Pencils and Pens (dark ink ONLY for readability) 5. Colored pencils (at least 18 colors) *Speak with me if you cannot get any of these materials*

EVALUATION: A = 90-100% B = 80-89% C = 70-79% D = 60-69 F = Less than 60% 1. Assignments: Absolutely no late assignments accepted for full credit unless due to excused absence. 2. Grades will be awarded on the following scale: • Homework – 15% • Class work – 20% • Labs – 20% • Tests/Quizzes 30% • Final 15% 3. Quizzes: May or may not be announced. If there is an excused absence, quizzes must be made up the following period the student returns to class . It is the student’s responsibility to come in and ask for the make-up quiz on their own time. 4. Tests: Will be announced at least one week in advance. If absent, it is the student's responsibility to make arrangements for make-ups at the teacher’s convenience within 1 week of the original exam date 5. Laboratory Exercises: Must be made up if missed within one week. If absent, it is the student's responsibility to make it to the “make up day” set by the teacher. This may be at lunch or after school. 6. Homework: Preparation is essential for this fast-moving course. Daily preparation includes assigned homework and the student’s independent review and organization of each day’s material. As much as possible, students will be given 2 class periods to complete the homework assignment.

ACADEMIC HONESTY: Complete honesty and integrity is expected from all students. Students may work together—collaboration helps the learning process, however, each student is expected to submit his/her own original work . This means that collaborators may not copy other’s work. Use of the Internet as a research tool is encouraged but plagiarism (“cutting and pasting”) will be dealt with according to the Woodside High School Academic Integrity Policy.

BEHAVIOR POLICY: 1. During lab activities, students will be working with equipment and chemicals that could be hazardous if used incorrectly. It is important to approach your work seriously. ° Wait for instructions before beginning any lab activity. • Do not touch equipment unless using it in a lab. • Goggles, closed toe shoes and long pants (thighs must be covered / shorts are inappropriate) will be worn during lab activities. • At the end of a lab or activity, students are responsible for cleaning up equipment, materials, and work area. 2. NO FOOD OR DRINKS ARE ALLOWED IN CLASS. Water bottles are permissible if the class is not engaged in a lab activity. 3. Students are expected to treat the teacher and their fellow students with respect at all times. This includes never talking when someone else (teacher or student) is addressing the class, as well as cooperating with members of your lab group. 4. The instructor will follow school policy with respect to electronics, phones, and dress code. If electronics are seen or heard, they will be confiscated. 5. Attendance and grades are closely related. To do well, you must be present in class . 6. Tardies . Students are expected to be in their seats with their materials before the bell rings.
