ANDERSON 1Department of Conservation and Research for Endangered Species, Zoological Society of San Diego, San Diego, California 2School of Biological Sciences, Victoria University of Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand 3College of Life Sciences, and Key Laboratory Resource Biology and Biotechnology in Western China, Ministry of Education, Northwest University, Xi’an, China ABSTRACT Men and women at Northwest University (n ¼ 631), Xi’an, China, were asked to rate the attractiveness of male or female figures manipulated to vary somatotype, waist-to- hip ratio (WHR), secondary sexual traits, and other features. In study 1, women rated the aver- age masculine somatotype as most attractive, followed by the mesomorphic (muscular), ecto- morphic (slim), and endomorphic (heavily built) somatotypes, in descending order of preference. In study 2, the amount and distribution of masculine trunk (chest and abdominal) hair were altered progressively in a series of front-posed figures. Women rated figures with no or little trunk hair as most attractive. Study 3 assessed the attractiveness of front-posed male figures which varied only in length of their nonerect penis. Numerical ratings for this trait were low, but moderate lengthening of the penis (22% or 33% above average) resulted in a significant increase in scores for attractiveness. In study 4, Chinese men rated the attractiveness of back- posed female images varying in waist-to-hip ratio (WHR from 0.5–1.0). -

Anthropology 513 Bioarchaeology Seminar Instructor: Dr. Corey Ragsdale Office: Social Science 217 Email: [email protected] Office hours: TR 2:00 to 3:30 Course Description Bioarchaeology allows us to ‘people’ the past. To do this, bioarchaeologists follow two general rules of thumb. First, they contextualize human remains in physical space, cultural milieu, and pre-historic time. That is, skeletonized and mummified bodies are never examined without also considering their associated archaeological materials. Second, bioarchaeologists regard ancient bodies as bio-cultural phenomena. Human biology is impacted directly by culture, and vice versa. With these two ideas in hand, we will explore bioarchaeology’s history, development, major topical concerns, and debates. We will also engage critically with categories and assumptions about race, sex/gender, age, ethnicity, disease and disability, violence, and body parts. To conclude the semester, we will reflect upon bioarchaeology’s relevance in contemporary politics. -

Human Biology 1 Human Biology (Bachelor of Science) Human Biology focuses on the study of the biological, physiological, nutritional, developmental, and evolutionary aspects of humans. The major has an extensive range of offerings with core courses emphasizing human function, genetics, nutrition, and evolution. Students who major in Human Biology gain extensive skills within the laboratory environment, including physiological, cellular, molecular, and statistical analyses. The laboratories house state-of-the-art instruments and equipment for students to gain valuable experience. Participation in faculty research projects or internships is strongly encouraged. All Human Biology majors complete an area of emphasis within the program. There are five areas of emphasis within the major: • The health science emphasis provides preparation for medical, dental, physician assistant and other health-related professional schools; for graduate programs in biological or biomedical sciences; or entry-level research positions with pharmaceutical or biotechnology companies. • The exercise science emphasis provides a background for careers in physical therapy, occupational therapy, athletic training, strength and conditioning, exercise physiology, fitness, or bio-mechanics. • The nutritional sciences/dietetics emphasis is accredited as a Didactic Program in Dietetics by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Employment opportunities include healthcare, nutrition education, governmental and community health agencies, fitness facilities, public policy, agribusiness, and the food service industry. Students who successfully complete this program may apply for entry into a Dietetic Internship program, which is required to become a registered dietitian. Registered dietitians provide food and nutritional services with a focus on health promotion and disease prevention. -
