The Protrepticus of Clement of Alexandria: a Commentary
Miguel Herrero de Jáuregui THE PROTREPTICUS OF CLEMENT OF ALEXANDRIA: A COMMENTARY to; ga;r yeu'do" ouj yilh'/ th'/ paraqevsei tajlhqou'" diaskedavnnutai, th'/ de; crhvsei th'" ajlhqeiva" ejkbiazovmenon fugadeuvetai. -

Deutsche Biographie – Onlinefassung ADB-Artikel Sylburg: Friedrich. Graec. A. D. B. XXVIII, 393). -
The Kingdom of God, the Highest Good Herman Bavinck Translated by Nelson D
TBR 2 (2011): 133–170 The Kingdom of God, The Highest Good Herman Bavinck Translated by Nelson D. Kloosterman * INTRODUCTION [28] Amid all the distress surrounding the discipline of theology today, it is undoubtedly a heartening phenomenon that the science identified as Ethics seems to be enjoying an unheralded resurgence of interest, compared to former times. This does not mean, of course, that everything in this discipline is flourishing. Not all of the causes to which Ethics is indebted for this resurgence are heartwarming. The way in which people try to dislodge the firm foundations of this discipline, or seek to caricature and deny its eternal principles, is far from encouraging. But that people are curious about the moral life and attempt to clarify its nature, principle, and essence, do provide reasons for rejoicing and gratitude, I think. Formerly, the discipline of Ethics received sparse attention, consisting mostly of explaining the doctrines of virtues and duties. Simply knowing what kind of persons we must be is inadequate, *The following essay is a lecture that Bavinck delivered to the Student Corps of the Theological School in Kampen—Fides Quaerit Intellectum—on 3 February 1881. The lecture was originally serialized in De Vrije Kerk: Vereeniging van Christelijke Gereformeerde Stemmen 7 (April–August 1881): 4:185–92; 5:224– 34; 6:271–77; 7:305–14; 8:353–60. These articles were republished as a single essay in the collection of Bavinck essays prepared by his brother, C.B. Bavinck, Kennis en Leven (Kampen: Kok, 1922), 28–56. The pagination from Kennis en Leven is provided in brackets: [ ]. -

Psukhai That Matter: The Psukhē in and Behind Clement of Alexandria’s Paedagogus Abstract This dissertation aims to investigate the ideology and mechanics of the ancient soul’s materiality as witnessed in Clement of Alexandria’s late second- or early third-century work, the Paedagogus. I focus on four ways in which Clement refers to the soul: (1) as an entity in need of punishment and healing, (2) as vulnerable to substances and the activities of the body, (3) as made visible through the body’s appearance, and (4) as an internal moral-core. Through the lens of the Paedagogus, this dissertation introduces recent theoretical work on “materiality” and “the body,” especially as developed in gender studies, into the broad scholarly conversation about the ancient soul. In the process, it shows how Clement uses the interactions between the ancient soul and the ancient body in his attempt to produce and police Christian subjects. -

Moses Mendelssohn on Hebrew As a Language of Action Avi Lifschitz
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by UCL Discovery 1 A natural yet providential tongue: Moses Mendelssohn on Hebrew as a language of action Avi Lifschitz (UCL) Abstract: How did Moses Mendelssohn reconcile a naturalistic theory of language, advocating the contingent development of all tongues, with the belief that Hebrew was a divine language that did not change ever since its inception? The seeming contradiction was resolved by employing the contemporary notion of the language of action – a primordial means of communication, where gesture and melody were as significant as words. Mendelssohn’s view of Hebrew as the language closest to this idiom was accompanied by his suggestion that the Jewish ceremonial law is a living script which can be properly understood only through oral instruction. He employed both ideas to counter the notions that the Hebrew vowel points were a late invention and that some loci in the Hebrew Bible had been subject to textual corruption. For Mendelssohn, the allegedly supernatural aspects of spoken Hebrew could be naturalised through constant and lively human conversation across the ages. The appropriation of contemporary critiques of the arbitrariness of language allowed Mendelssohn to forge an original synthesis that could simultaneously accommodate naturalism and providentialism. If this essay starts with Heinrich Heine’s well-known comparison between Moses Mendelssohn and Martin Luther, it is only in order to question this nineteenth-century commentary on Mendelssohn. Heine saw the Jewish philosopher and the Christian reformer as the intellectual pioneers of a return to the Bible which involved, respectively, the undermining of rabbinical literature and Catholic scholasticism. -

In the first instance, it contributes to a body of research which has sought to revise the customary view in New Testament studies, that the historical study of Jesus began with the posthumous publication of Herman Samuel Reimarus's Von dem Zwecke Jesu und seiner Jünger (1778), the last in a series of Fragments published by G. E. Lessing. The thesis proposed here is that Reimarus’s writings on Jesus are a notable but relatively late entry, by the German intellectual establishment, into arguments about Jesus and Christian origins which had been raging across Europe for more than a century: arguments concerning history, morality and political theology. -
Pseudo-Iustini Epistula Ad Zenam Et Serenum
Pseudo-Iustini Epistula ad Zenam et Serenum Miroslav Marcovich This is the most puzzling piece of the so-called Corpus Pseudo-Iustini.' It opens with Ίουστῖνος Ζηνᾷ καὶ Σερὴνῳ τοῖς άδελφοῖς χαίρειν and closes with 'Η χάρις μετἀ πάντων ὑμῶν ( = Τι 3:15; Heb 13:25).1 2 Back in 1881, Adolf Har nack suggested that an unknown Justin (not Justin Martyr) may be the author of the Epistle.3 In his turn, in 1896 Pierre Batiffol suggested Sisinnius, a Novatian bishop of Constantinople and adversary of John Chrysostom (t 407), as its author.4 But both suggestions are only a shot in the dark. I have argued elsewhere5 that the Epistle is a forgery, a προγὐμνασμα, an idle exercise in Christian rhetoric. Its author proVes to be a mediocre rhetorician stitching together a quilt (or a cento) consisting of Christian, Stoic and Cynic commonplaces in Ethics. Among his many sources the lion's share belongs to Clement of Alexandria (particularly his Paedagogus, Book 2).6 That means that Zenas, Serenus and Papas (1.4) existed only in the author’s imagination. And if the inscription in A is authentic (Ίουστῖνος ... χαίρειν), it 1 On this Corpus compare Christoph Riedweg in Reallexikon f Antike u. Christen tum, s.V. Iustinus Martyr II (Pseudo-justinische Schriften), sub prelo. 2 The Epistle was first published by Robertus Stephanus [Iustini Opera omnia], Paris 1551, 1-8.
