Equal Parts Pop-Lover and Punk-Rocker, María Del Pilar Mixes Equal parts pop-lover and punk-rocker, María del Pilar mixes her DIY Riot Grrrl roots and penchant for bilingual lyrics to create melodic, sweet, and tough-as-nails pop anthems that rock. From the Andes Mountains to the San Fernando Valley, María del Pilar is no stranger to singing across borders. Born in Chile, she grew quick roots in Los Angeles and became an integral part of the city's musical fabric (and the Latin Alternative scene) with her rock band Los Abandoned, that journalist Gustavo Arellano once said "reflected the post-modern Latino experience better than any band ever." And Pilar has far from stopped. In 2015, María del Pilar released her deluxe edition solo album, Songs + Canciones I, which left the world swooning at her flavor for pop hooks that maintain the roughness of her rock roots. The album combines her debut EP from 2009 and her first full-length from 2013. The lead single "En El Dancefloor" skyrocketed to the top of the Mexican radio charts and led to a stellar performance at the notorious Vive Latino as well as a memorable performance in Mexico City's Zócalo- the prestigious venue that's hosted the likes of Roger Waters and Radiohead. Songs + Canciones II, released on February 1, 2019 marks the beginning of a new journey for the artist. Produced with Filip Nikolic of Poolside, this new album is a sonically lush tropical playground. Pilar’s effervescent songwriting shines alongside her friends invited to collaborate, members of No Doubt, Fitz+Tantrums, Las Cafeteras, and Chicano Batman. Advance singles from the album - “Original Dreamers” was featured in the LA Times, “Waiting on the Boys” has received multiple radio plays on KCRW and Reactor FM, and Remezcla has featured all 3 advanced singles, including “Milagrito.” Spotify playlists include Vibra Tropical, LatinX Indie, Latinos Unidos, Distrito Indie, and more. While finishing up her new album and a string of show dates that included KCRW’s Nights at the Hammer Museum with Amber Mark, María del Pilar has been on the road and in the studio collaborating with an array of talented musicians. She's shared the stage with Chicano Batman, Francisca Valenzuela, and Tegan & Sara. She also recently appeared on Conan with Tune-Yards as a backup vocalist. And, Bird and the Bee's Inara George asked María del Pilar to translate her single “Release Me” into Spanish, bringing back the lost art of translating songs. Pilar's cred doesn't stop at the stage - her sounds have found their place on screen as well. Her buzz single "Se Me Hace Más" was included in Season 1 of the new Starz drama "Vida." And, in Season 2, she will be making her on-screen live performance debut as herself."Santiago of the Seas," Nickelodeon’s new bilingual show, features original songs written by Pilar. With chart-topping singles, prime TV placements, international festival appearances, and a border-hopping, barrier-breaking word-of-mouth buzz, María del Pilar continues to carry the torch in the U.S. Latino bilingual movement. BELAKO Bio (Belako Rekords 2019) Belako are Josu Ximun Billelabeitia, Lore Nekane Billelabeitia, Lander Zalakain and Cristina Lizarraga. This band from Mungia has kicked ass in the last two years playing non-stop around Spain and Europe. Anything can happen on the stage… Power, electricity, punk attitude... Like the bands of the 80’s. They´ve played in the biggest festivals of Spain; PRIMAVERA SOUND, BBK LIVE, FIB BENICASSIM, SOS 4.8, LOW FESTIVAL, DCODE, MADCOOL, WAM MURCIA, JAZZALDIA, KUTXA KULTUR FESTIBALA, BIME, SANTANDER MUSIC FESTIVAL... In 2012 they won Radio3 and Gaztea awards. In 2015 they won Rolling Stone’s and MIN Music Independent’s “best new band” awards. In 2016 they won the RNE´s (Spanish National Radio) “Best modern music band” award and in 2017 they came to win the Best Live Award in both MIN and The Iberian Music Awards. 2018 is also being a good year, they have won MIN´s Best Band, Best Live and Best Video Clip (for Render Me Numb). High intensity, hypnotic melodies, great riffs, amazing bass rhythms, powerful drums…Every show goes from the darkness to the light, the 80´s through the 21st century, sweet voices to screams, relaxation to sweat… postpunk, electronic… Their first full-length release in 2013, EURIE, was the catalyst of their success, and this success has continued with 2EPs, released by their own label, Belako Rekords. “AAAA!!!!” (June of 2014) is the wildest BELAKO. Home recorded, they wanted the sound of Nirvana, The Clash, The Cure, Pixies and Sonic Youth. “BELE BELTZAK BAINO EZ” (June of 2014) has a modern sound, recorded in MusicBox Studios.

But as each of these things changes, do our tastes also change to reflect the present, or remain fixed, reflecting our past? Here, we investigate how where a person lives shapes their musical preferences, using geographic relocation to construct quasi-natural experiments that measure short- and long-term effects. Analyzing comprehensive data on over 16 million users on Spotify, we show that relocation within the United States has only a small impact on individuals' tastes, which remain more similar to those of their past environments. We then show that the age gap between a person and the music they consume indicates that adolescence, and likely their environment during these years, shapes their lifelong musical tastes. Our results demonstrate the robustness of individuals' musical identity, and shed new light on the development of preferences. Music is the soundtrack of our lives. How can we understand the indie phenomenon in the history of juvenile music related to Argentine rock bands? What variables should we take into consideration to comprehend indie since its logic differs from the one established by the identitarian appropriation of music genres? In order to answer these questions, we describe indie music in Buenos Aires and show its evolution.

Reinterpreting the Global, Rearticulating the Local: Nueva Música Colombiana, Networks, Circulation, and Affect Simón Calle Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2012 © 2012 Simón Calle All rights reserved ABSTRACT Reinterpreting the Global, Rearticulating the Local: Nueva Música Colombiana, Networks, Circulation, and Affect Simón Calle This dissertation analyses identity formation through music among contemporary Colombian musicians. The work focuses on the emergence of musical fusions in Bogotá, which participant musicians and Colombian media have called “nueva música Colombiana” (new Colombian music). The term describes the work of bands that assimilate and transform North-American music genres such as jazz, rock, and hip-hop, and blend them with music historically associated with Afro-Colombian communities such as cumbia and currulao, to produce several popular and experimental musical styles. In the last decade, these new fusions have begun circulating outside Bogotá, becoming the distinctive sound of young Colombia domestically and internationally. The dissertation focuses on questions of musical circulation, affect, and taste as a means for articulating difference, working on the self, and generating attachments others and therefore social bonds and communities This dissertation considers musical fusion from an ontological perspective influenced by actor-network, non-representational, and assemblage theory. Such theories consider a fluid social world, which emerges from the web of associations between heterogeneous human and material entities. The dissertation traces the actions, interactions, and mediations between places, people, institutions, and recordings that enable the emergence of new Colombian music. In considering those associations, it places close attention to the affective relationships between people and music.

In spite of the fact that youth under the age of twenty-four make up approximately forty-five percent of Mexico’s population, young people and their engagement with and creation of popular culture have been severely understudied.
