Figuring translations as gifts positions both source and target cultures as givers and recipients and supplements over-used translation metaphors of betrayal, plundering, submission, or fidelity. As Marcel Mauss articulates, the gift itself desires to be returned and reciprocated. My project maps out the Hemispheric Americas as an independent translation zone and highlights non-European translation norms. Portuguese and Spanish have been sidelined even from European translation studies: only in Mexico and Brazil do we see autochthonous translation theories in Spanish and Portuguese. Focusing on translation strategies that value ii taboo-breaking, I identify poet-translators in Mexico and Brazil who develop their own translation manuals. -

AN IMPERIAL HOUSEHOLD’S STRATEGY TO SAVE EMPEROR HIROHITO IN MACARTHUR’S JAPAN Kaoru Hoshino, M.A. University of Pittsburgh, 2010 This thesis examines the motives behind the Japanese imperial household’s decision to invite an American Christian woman, Elizabeth Gray Vining, to the court as tutor to Crown Prince Akihito about one year after the Allied Occupation of Japan began. In the past, the common narrative of scholars and the media has been that the new tutor, Vining, came to the imperial household at the invitation of Emperor Hirohito, who personally asked George Stoddard, head of the United States Education Mission to Japan, to find a tutor for the crown prince. While it may have been true that the emperor directly spoke to Stoddard regarding the need of a new tutor for the prince, the claim that the emperor came up with such a proposal entirely on his own is debatable given his lack of decision-making power, as well as the circumstances surrounding him and the imperial institution at the time of the Occupation. -

This show was notable for acquainting the New York School with the medium as its artists would go on to embrace collage, creating objects that ranged from small compositions of handmade paper to mural-sized works of torn and reassembled canvas. Despite the significance of this development, art historians consistently overlook collage during the era of Abstract Expressionism. This project examines four artists who based significant portions of their oeuvre on papier collé during this period (i.e. the late 1940s and early 1950s): Lee Krasner, Robert Motherwell, Anne Ryan, and Esteban Vicente. Working primarily with fine art materials in an abstract manner, these artists challenged many of the characteristics that supposedly typified collage: its appropriative tactics, disjointed aesthetics, and abandonment of ―high‖ culture. -

É composto por VIVA VAIA – Magnum Opus do poeta concreto Augusto de Campos, inspirado na vaia recebida por Caetano Veloso no III Festival Internacional da Canção, em 1968. Foram utilizadasprincipalmente as contribuições de CAMPOS (1993) e VELOSO (1997). Abstract: The focus of this essay is to comment on MONUMENTO À VAIA, written in 1972 to compose Navilouca, an almanac organized by TorquatoNeto and Waly Salomão. It consists of VIVA VAIA - Magnum Opus by the concrete poet Augusto de Campos, inspired by the boo received by Caetano Veloso at the III International Song Festival, in 1968. Vol. 15, Num. 3 (Spring 2018): 240-268 Dulcinéia Catadora: Cardboard Corporeality and Collective Art in Brazil Elizabeth Gray Brown University Eloísa Cartonera and Cardboard Networks From a long history of alternative publishing in Latin America, Eloísa Cartonera emerged in Argentina in 2003, and sparked a movement that has spread throughout South and Central America and on to Africa and Europe. The first cartonera emerged as a response to the debt crisis in Argentina in 2001 when the country defaulted causing the Argentine peso to plummet to a third of its value. Seemingly overnight, half of the country fell into living conditions below the poverty line, and many turned to informal work in order to survive. The cartoneros, people who make their living salvaging and reselling recyclable materials, became increasingly present in the streets of Buenos Aires. With the onset of neoliberal policies, people mistrusted and rejected everything tied to the government and economic powers and saw the need to build new societal, political, and cultural models. Two such people were the Argentine poet, Washington Cucurto, and artist Javier Barilaro. Distressed by the rising number of cartoneros and the impossible conditions of the publishing market, Cucurto and Barilaro founded Eloísa Cartonera. Thirteen years later, Eloísa is still printing poetry and prose on Xeroxed paper and binding it in cardboard bought from cartoneros at five times the rate of the recycling Gray 241 centers. The cardboard covers are hand-painted in tempera by community members, including cartoneros, and then sold on the streets for a minimal price, just enough to cover production costs. -

Abordando aquellas figuraciones que promueven la emergencia de un imaginario en torno al cuerpo, el texto se abre con un epígrafe de René Descartes sobre su clásica renuncia sensorial, para retornar, ya hacia las últimas páginas, desde el rol protagónico de Catatau (la novela de Paulo Leminski); si el primero enfatiza el intento por depurar la realidad del objeto y la pureza de la razón, el segundo marca la disyuntiva entre el lenguaje del trópico y el consecuente fracaso de clasificar lo real.
