In the following chapters, we display graphs of the data. The data is provided in tabular form for more science in the end of the document. The raw data and this report can be downloaded at https://rampantpanda.com/coffee-and-distro/ Summary of linux usage Distro usage 2/20 Distribution choice and preferred method of coffee making with a quick look at bean-grinding behavior among humans DE usage, total Excluding Windows, MacOS and all the ones I didn’t recognize. From the data (see the end of the document) we can conclude that Cinnamon users can’t really type and i3 users are really specific. 3/20 Distribution choice and preferred method of coffee making with a quick look at bean-grinding behavior among humans DE usage by distro Ubuntu Arch Some weird ones in there, BTW. 4/20 Distribution choice and preferred method of coffee making with a quick look at bean-grinding behavior among humans Manjaro Fedora 5/20 Distribution choice and preferred method of coffee making with a quick look at bean-grinding behavior among humans Debian Mint At this point it is unclear whether all Mint users or just the Cinnamon users can’t a) type or b) pick from a list or c) both. Further study is certainly needed. 6/20 Distribution choice and preferred method of coffee making with a quick look at bean-grinding behavior among humans Elementary 11% of elementary users just can’t help themselves. Pop! OS Or maybe it’s Plasma users. Further study needed. 7/20 Distribution choice and preferred method of coffee making with a quick look at bean-grinding behavior among humans Open SUSE Zorin 8/20 Distribution choice and preferred method of coffee making with a quick look at bean-grinding behavior among humans Solus Blue is for Budgie here. Endeavour It seems that Cinnamon users have no typing problems on Endeavour. 9/20 Distribution choice and preferred method of coffee making with a quick look at bean-grinding behavior among humans Coffee making methods Summary From the results, we can conclude that about 3.15% of people have a tendency to give long explanations where a quick click of the mouse on a pre-defined answer would suffice. Further study needed to find out why. 10/20 Distribution choice and preferred method of coffee making with a quick look at bean-grinding behavior among humans Bean-grinding preferences For more in-depth analysis, see chapter “Bean handling and distro usage”. 11/20 Distribution choice and preferred method of coffee making with a quick look at bean-grinding behavior among humans Bean handling and distro usage Do you grind your beans? Yes, and I roast Bias for pre-ground beans What is your distro of choice? them as well Yes No (stetson-sleeve method) Arcolinux B 1 1.00 Bunsen labs 1 1.00 Deepin 1 1.00 Endeavor 2 1.00 Mx linux 1 1.00 Neon 1 1.00 Opensuse 5 1.00 Slackware 1 1.00 Ubuntu or MacOS 1 1.00 Void 1 1.00 Windows and/or Ubuntu depending on project. 1 1.00 Elementary 1 8 0.78 Mint 1 8 0.78 Debian 2 9 0.64 Fedora 5 10 0.33 Windows (any) 2 4 0.33 Ubuntu (or flavors of) 1 16 31 0.32 Manjaro 6 11 0.29 Pop! OS 3 5 0.25 Arch (BTW) 11 16 0.19 Solus 1 1 0.00 Zorin, for now, on Dell 3185 1 0 MacOS 1 -1.00 Mobile only 1 -1.00 nixos 1 -1.00 Zorin 2 -1.00 The results here are highly interesting. By using the Stetson-Sleeve method we calculated the BPGB (bias for pre-ground beans) from -1 to +1 for each distribution. The higher the BPGB, the more likely a user of the distribution is buying his beans pre-ground. With lower values of BPGB, the distribution seems to cause bean-grinding. This can easily be validated when looking at the distributions at the bottom of the table above. It’s hardly surprising to find MacOS and mobile users there. 12/20 Distribution choice and preferred method of coffee making with a quick look at bean-grinding behavior among humans The average BPGB for the entire dataset is 0,39, so distributions with a BPGB below this are causing some levels of bean-grinding, and distributions with a higher score cause buying pre-ground. Also, we can conclude that Ubuntu is the only OS used by people who roast their own beans, which is of course fitting. Coffee making method by distribution choice We can easily conclude several things based on the graph above. - Aeropress and Moka pot users seem to favor Elementary, due to exquisite taste of these users - Pop! OS users seem to like French press, probably also because the preference towards good things. - Among instant coffee drinkers, Mint seems to be popular, for reasons. - Arch is a little over-presented in populations that do not drink coffee or drink really horrible coffee. The reasons for this are also pretty obvious, BTW. - Turkish coffee drinkers like Fedora 13/20 Distribution choice and preferred method of coffee making with a quick look at bean-grinding behavior among humans Distribution choice by coffee making method When we flip the previous graph around, we also find very interesting things that we’d like to study further with a generous grant of some kind. - Ubuntu and Arch seem to have pretty similar coffee making profiles among their users - Windows users prefer to either drink the wrong kind of coffee, or mess about with ridiculous coffee-making methods. - Some Elementary users like horrible coffee, this certainly requires further study. 14/20 Distribution choice and preferred method of coffee making with a quick look at bean-grinding behavior among humans Case study: Elementary COUNTA of What is your distro of What’s your choice? DE? How do you make your coffee? Pantheon Plasma Aeropress 11.11% Drip coffee machine 22.22% 11.11% Espresso machine 22.22% I don’t drink coffee 11.11% Moka pot 22.22% COUNTA of What is your distro of What’s your choice? DE? Do you grind your beans? Pantheon Plasma Grand Total No 88.89% 88.89% Yes 11.11% 11.11% From the data, we can see that 100% of Elementary users with a Plasma DE drink really bad, but regular coffee. This is highly surprising, as initial hypothesis would suggest something really obscure and painful rather than a nearly mundane choice, especially as all the Plasma users also grind their beans, probably in a highly configurable and fussy method. Conclusion We’d really like a big grant to buy computers, drink coffee and distro-hop like rabbits on speed. 15/20 Distribution choice and preferred method of coffee making with a quick look at bean-grinding behavior among humans End of the document COUNTA of What is your What is your distro of choice? distro of choice?
