We had a great time on the trip. We had some representatives from the Vandenberg and Santa Barbara clubs along with us for the trip. The most notable thing on the trip up was a stop in La Canada Flintridge to refuel the bus and get a bite to eat. I pulled out my PST Coronado and did a little impromptu public Sun Gazing. The Sun was pretty active with a number of platform prominences as well as the ever-present flame types. A distinct sunspot group in a very disturbed area of the Sun with a bright spot had me wondering if there was a flare in progress (There wasn’t.) The patrons at the tables outside didn’t seem to object to seeing the Sun either. I had a little bit of a scare when we first got up to the gate as a couple of people who were going to meet us there were nowhere to be seen. Fortunately one of them was already on the grounds and the other showed up while we were in the Museum. Relief! As it turned out we all went on the tour of the grounds. Our tour guide Greg gave us a tour starting outside the 60” Dome. He talked about the various Solar Telescopes -the old Snow telescope which was always a non-performer because of the design of the building- too many air currents. He talked about the rivalry over the 60 and 150 ft tower solar instruments (looks like UCLA won this one over USC.) And we got a good look at the 150 ft tower. -

Here, we present an analysis of NGC 588, a GHIIR in M33, based on optical Integral Field Spectroscopy (IFS) data obtained with the PMAS instru- ment at the 3.5 m telescope of Calar Alto Observatory, CAHA, together with Spitzer in- frared images at 8 µm and 24 µm. The extinction distribution measured in the optical shows complex structure, with three maxima which correlate in position with those of the emis- sion at 24 µm and 8 µm. Furthermore, the Hα luminosity absorbed by the dust within the H II region reproduces the structure observed in the 24 µm image, supporting the use of the 24 µm band as a valid tracer of recent star formation. -

Feb 14 Garden Stars 7-8:30PM LOOKING UP! a message from the president Norfolk Botanical Gardens This month’s most talked about astronomy event has to be the total lunar Feb 16 Saturday Sun-day eclipse. The BBAA participated by supporting the Watch Party at the 10AM-1PM Chesapeake Planetarium. Anyone in attendance will tell you it was COLD, but Elizabeth River Park manageable if you wore layers, utilized the planetarium where Dr. Robert Hitt seemed to have the thermostat set to 100 degrees, and drank copious amounts Feb 23 Skywatch of the hot coffee that Kent Blackwell brewed in the back office. 6PM-10PM The event had a huge following on Facebook but with the cold Northwest River Park temperatures, we weren’t sure how many would come out. By Kent’s estimate there were between 100–200 people in attendance. Many club members set up telescopes, as well as a few members of the public too. -

50 TAILORED DETERRENCE - A FRENCH PERSPECTIVE Bruno TERTRAIS France is not at the forefront of the debate within NATO on the future of deterrence and retains a fairly conservative nuclear policy. However, the evolution of the French nuclear deterrent has been largely in tune with US and UK policies. Nuclear Deterrence With Smaller Arsenals Nuclear weapons will remain the ultimate guarantee of a nation’s survival for the foreseeable future. There is no alternative means of defense on the horizon which may threaten in a credible way the complete destruction of a State as a coherent entity, in just a few minutes. Conventional weapons could conveivably do the job, but only through repeated and multiple raids and with a lesser guarantee of success. Moreover, conventional weapons cannot instill in the adversary’s mind the very peculiar fear induced by nuclear weapons. Biological weapons are arguably as scary as nuclear ones - and perhaps even more so, in particu- lar for public opinion. But their use can be controlled only with difficulty. More importantly, they are not able to physically destroy government buildings, factories, command posts and arsenals. Unless perhaps deployed in space in very large numbers, strategic defenses will not be effective against a large number of missiles equipped with decoys and multiple warheads. Finally, threatening some particular hardened targets will continue to be possible only by nuclear means. But future deterrence will be ensured with smaller nuclear arse- nals. Extra-Nuclear Starbursts: Young Luminous Hinge Clumps in Interacting Galaxies Beverly J. Smith1, Roberto Soria2, Curtis Struck3, Mark L. Giroux1, Douglas A. Swartz4, and Mihoko Yukita5 ABSTRACT Hinge clumps are luminous knots of star formation near the base of tidal features in some interacting galaxies. We use archival Hubble Space Telescope UV/optical/IR images and Chandra X-ray maps along with GALEX UV, Spitzer IR, and ground-based optical/near-IR images to investigate the star forming properties in a sample of 12 hinge clumps in five interacting galaxies. 1 The most extreme of these hinge clumps have star formation rates of 1 9 M yr− , comparable to or larger than the ‘overlap’ region of intense star formation between− the⊙ two disks of the colliding galaxy system the Antennae. In the HST images, we have found remarkably large and luminous sources at the centers of these hinge clumps. These objects are much larger and more luminous than typical ‘super-star clusters’ in interacting galaxies, and are sometimes embedded in a linear ridge of fainter star clusters, consistent with star formation along a narrow caustic. These central sources have diameters of 70 pc, compared to 3 pc in ‘ordinary’ super-star clusters. ∼ ∼ Their absolute I magnitudes range from MI 12.2 to 16.5, thus if they are individual star clusters they would lie near the top of the ‘super∼ − star cluster’− luminosity function of star clusters. These sources may not be individual star clusters, but instead may be tightly packed groups of clusters that are blended together in the HST images. -

Swift satellite images a galaxy ablaze with starbirth 26 February 2008 are clearly resolved, even in the crowded nucleus of the galaxy. The image also includes Milky Way foreground stars and much more distant galaxies shining through M33. Young, hot stars are prodigious producers of ultraviolet light, which heat up the surrounding gas clouds to such high temperatures that they radiate brightly in ultraviolet light. The image shows the giant star-forming region NGC 604 as a bright spot to the lower left of the galaxy's nucleus.
