ACCADEMIA INTERNAZIONALE MELITENSE Introduzione Storica / Historical Introduction CARLO MARULLO DI CONDOJANNI siciliano, controllò l’Isola, gli arabi spadroneggiarono nell’arcipelago maltese, e, ciò che è certo, nel 973 vi costruirono un castello che rimase come loro fortificazione, finché Ruggero di Normandia non li allontanò nel 1090 dalle Isole Maltesi. Il Castello, secondo alcuni storici, aveva base rotonda ed era in prossimità del distrutto Tempio di Giunone. Impadronitosi dell’Isola, Ruggero il Normanno fortificò a sua volta il manufatto ed assicurò numerosa presenza di soldati a protezione del porto. Bisogna arrivare al dominio degli Angioini tra il 1266 e il 1284 per avere notizia dell’esistenza della Chiesa di Sant’Angelo, Chiesa che sorgeva sul “Castello al mare”, qualche volta citato come “Rocca dell’Isola di Malta” (Castello del Porto, Castello della Marina) . Denominazioni Il manufatto costituito dalla fortificazione arabo-normanna e dalla Chiesa di Sant’Anna deve attendere la metà del secolo XIV per assumere definitivamente il nome di Castel Sant’Angelo. Sull’argomento qualcuno lo deriva dal nome del Conte Angelo De Malfi, Governatore dell’Isola nel 1552; altri si rapportano invece alla concessione del feudo costituito dalle isole maltesi ad Angelo Cazzolis, personaggio del Regno di Napoli. Forse la denominazione di Castel Sant’Angelo è da mettere in correlazione con lo stesso Castel Sant’Angelo di Roma. E’ certo che al tempo della presenza sul promontorio della famiglia de Nava, il “Castello sul Mare” prende il nome di Sant’Angelo. Sempre dal punto di vista storico, a parte le ipotesi esposte in precedenza, il nome di Sant’Angelo appare solo nel luglio 1540, quando in un documento esistente viene usato questo nome a proposito di un Cavalier Claudius Humbliéres che fu ristretto nel carcere di Sant’Angelo. Castel Sant’Angelo, o Castello a Mare, o Castello della Roccia, sono termini diversi con cui veniva chiamata l’Isola fortificata dai Cavalieri. Un altro dato certo è che Bosio lo cita come “Castel Sant’Angelo” al tempo della cessione fatta da Carlo V all’Ordine, e successivamente, parlando del territorio, riferisce con il nome di “Castello di Malta”. Al tempo dei Cavalieri, il Castello di Malta divenne Castello Melitense o, più semplicemente, Castello, e bisogna di nuovo attendere il 1540 per trovare una citazione che riprende il nome di Sant’Angelo, o meglio Santi Angeli. Dal punto di vista storico, sembra che vi siano tracce da ritrovarsi negli anni tra il 1090 e 1271, periodo nel quale furono certamente realizzate fortificazioni. 8 It is certain that in 973 the Arabs built a castle there which remained as their fortification until Roger of Normandy forced them to abandon the Maltese islands in 1090. According to some historians, the castle had a round base and was close to the destroyed temple of Juno. The Norman Roger also fortified the building and installed a large garrison there to protect the port. We have to wait until the rule of the Angevins between 1266 and 1284 to obtain informaton on the church of St. Angelo. This church was built on the "castle on the sea", sometimes called the "fortress of the island of Malta" (Castle of the Port, Castle of the Marina). Names The buildings comprising the Norman-Arab fortification and the church of St. Anna did not take their final name of Castle of St. Angelo until the middle of the 15th century. Some say they were named after Count Angelo De Malfi, governor of the island in 1552; others say it refers to the concession of the fief comprising the Maltese islands to Angelo Cazzolis under the Kingdom of Naples. Perhaps the name of Castle St. Angelo has also to do with the fact that there is a Castle St. Angelo in Rome. What is certain is that the "castle on the sea" took the name of St. Angelo when the Nava family lived on the promontory. From a historical angle, apart from the foregoing, the name of St. Angelo appeared only in July 1540, when the name is used in an existing document with reference to a Cavalier Claudius Humbliéres who was confined in the St. Angelo prison. Castle St. Angelo, or Castle on the Sea or Castle on the Rock, were all names for the island fortified by the Knights. Another certain fact is that Bosio cites it as “Castle St. Angelo” at the time when Charles V gave it to the Order and later, talking about the territory, refers to it as the “Castle of Malta”. At the time of the Knights, the Castle of Malta become Melitense Castle or, more simply, Castle and we have to wait until 1540 to find a reference to the name of St. Angelo, or rather Saint Angels. The set of commemorative stamps issued by the Order. 10 Nel periodo angioino, risulta infatti che furono effettuati numerosi lavori tra il Forte e quella che fu chiamata la Chiesa di Santa Maria. Il periodo normanno, per la verità, non ci lascia alcun nome del Governatore del Forte. Il primo di questi è infatti Ugone de Brusone, del periodo angioino, cui succedette Vertando de Real. Si ha traccia di grandi lavori nel Forte nel 1271. In questo anno Matteo de Podio è il Castellano dell’Isola di Malta. Nel 1273 comanda la fortezza Roberto Cafario, il quale accentra poteri civili e militari sull’Isola. Molti documenti esistono di questo periodo nei quali sono descritti gli armamenti della fortificazione. Non erano, naturalmente, tempi tranquilli e il dialogo tra la Fortezza e la città è assai animato e non mancano influenze della Francia e la presenza di mercenari nella struttura militare. Nel 1283, a seguito di una battaglia navale, gli Angioini perdettero la Fortezza. Nel 1315 è Castellano Arnaldo di Solimella; dopo di lui si ha memoria di Francesco Gatto e Guglielmo Murina, sotto il comando del quale il 12 novembre 1372 Re Federico III visitò l’Isola di Malta. Bisogna arrivare al 1420, anno in cui Alfonso V cedeva a mutuo le Isole Maltesi al Viceré Siciliano Don Antonio Cardona. Solo dopo un quinquennio la proprietà passa a Don Consalvo Monroi. La sua presenza durerà solo cinque anni, finché, incalzato dai Maltesi esasperati, egli si rifugiò con la moglie nel Castello di Sant’Angelo. Tempi difficili per i Maltesi in lotta con il Regno di Sicilia, che, chiusa la vicenda Monroi, incorporò in maniera definitiva le isole. Nel 1430 Gutierre de Nava Alcaide è Castellano del Castello di Malta, ne seguono Nico de Guevara e Giovanni de Nava nel 1469. We have to wait until 1420 to learn that Alphonse V “loaned” the Maltese islands to the Sicilian Viceroy Don Antonio Cardona. He remained there for five years until the property passed to Don Consalvo Monroi. He only lasted there another five years until, routed0 by the exasperated Maltese, he took refuge with his wife in the castle of St. Angelo. These were difficult times for the Maltese who were battling against the Kingdom of Sicily which, after the Monroi incident, finally took over the islands. In 1430 Gutierre de Nava Alcaide was the commander of the castle of Malta, followed by Nico de Guevara and Giovanni de Nava nel 1469 . The de 11 la presenza della famiglia de Nava nel Castello di Sant’Angelo, alla quale ripetutamente si richiama, per gli interventi architettonici, la relazione che segue del Prof. Vicari, che vede prima Pietro nel 1488 e quindi Alvaro nel 1509, cui è attribuita la costruzione anche di una torre sopra il Castello nel 1523. Quest’ultimo lo deterrà fino al 1530, anno nel quale il Castello viene preso dall’Ordine di San Giovanni di Gerusalemme. Nel 1524 i primi due Cavalieri di San Giovanni, arrivarono sull’Isola per esplorare i luoghi, manifestando le loro intenzioni. L’Università locale protestò con Carlo V, ma l’autorità di Papa Clemente VII predominò sull’imperatore, peraltro incoraggiato dal suo Gran Cancelliere Mercurino di Gattinara, nipote del Gran Priore di Messina. Il 24 marzo, con apposito statuto Carlo V concede all’Ordine di San Giovanni Malta, Gozo e la Città di Tripoli.
