Introduction1 Among the indigenous languages of the Andean region of Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, northern Chile and northern Argentina, Quechuan and Aymaran have traditionally occupied a dominant position. Both Quechuan and Aymaran are language families of several million speakers each. Quechuan consists of a conglomerate of geo- graphically defined varieties, traditionally referred to as Quechua “dialects”, not- withstanding the fact that mutual intelligibility is often lacking. Present-day Ayma- ran consists of two distinct languages that are not normally referred to as “dialects”. The absence of a demonstrable genetic relationship between the Quechuan and Aymaran language families, accompanied by a lack of recognizable external gen- etic connections, suggests a long period of independent development, which may hark back to a period of incipient subsistence agriculture roughly dated between 8000 and 5000 BP (Torero 2002: 123–124), long before the Andean civilization at- tained its highest stages of complexity.     Tehuelche language Tehuelche (Aoniken, Inaquen, Gunua-Kena, Gununa-Kena) is one of the Chonan Tehuelche languages of Patagonia. Its speakers were nomadic hunters who occupied territory in present-day Chile, north of Tierra del Fuego and south of the Mapuche people. It is Patagón also known as Aonikenk or Aonek'o 'ajen.     Alain Fabre 2005- Diccionario etnolingüístico y guía bibliográfica de los pueblos indígenas sudamericanos. 1 CHON [Última modificación: 20/10/2020] CHON (¿Y TRONCO GÜNÜNA-KÜNA-CHON?) La familia chon está conformada por tres lenguas, selknam, tehuelche, teushen dos de las cuales (selknam y teushen) se extinguieron entre los años 60 y 80 del siglo XX. Según Viegas Barros (1988, 1991c, 1994a, 2003b y 2005d) las lenguas chon podrían estar lejanamente emparentadas con el gününa-këna, si bien este investigador invoca también una relación areal posterior más estrecha entre esta lengua y el teushen. El posible parentesco entre el gününa-këna y la familia chon, hipótesis todavía no comprobada, que Viegas Barros (2005d) considera como una cuestión todavía pendiente, involucraría un tronco superordinado con una profundidad temporal mucho mayor a la de la familia chon. El lector debe tener presente que la inclusión del gününa-këna en este capítulo se debe a razones de presentación práctica de las lenguas de la Patagonia, y la existencia de un tronco superordinado gününa-këna/ chon debe ser considerada como hipótesis todavía abierta. Todas estas lenguas se hablaban en la Patagonia y Tierra del Fuego, abarcando en sus confines septentrionales a las actuales provincias de Buenos Aires y La Pampa. Los grupos tehuelche y gününa-kena se fueron aculturando a los mapuche antes de fundirse en la población campesina actual. El grado de divergencia interna del tronco chon fue calculado por Swadesh (1959) como correspondiendo a una fecha de 24 siglos mínimos. El cómputo hecho por Suárez (1970) proponía unos 28 siglos. Viegas Barros (1992), quien manejaba materiales más adecuados, obtiene como resultado 2,3 milenios de divergencia para la familia chon.

VEZUB* RESUMEN Durante 1869 y 1870 el oficial de la marina británica George Ch. Musters recorrió 2.750 km desde el estrecho de Magallanes hasta el río Negro, integrando una caravana que encabezaba el cacique Casimiro cuando la Patagonia era todavía un territorio autónomo. Mediante la sistematización de datos de la crónica de Musters, provisto de herramientas informáticas para la elaboración de grafos, este artículo se dedica al análisis de las redes sociales que los actores tejieron durante el viaje. A partir de esta metodología se ensaya una discusión crítica de la etnología culturalista y su refutación parcial por los autores que consideraron la identidad étnica “tehuelche” como el fruto de la imposición y la imaginación coloniales. La hipótesis a confrontar es que la caravana de Casimiro puede comprenderse como un itinerario geográfico, político, parental, comercial y guerrero que delimita los sentidos históricos que asumió la identificación tehuelche en el contexto de los procesos expansivos del colonialismo y los estados nacionales argentino y chileno.
