It is regarded as a centre of Javanese culture. The architecture of the palace represents the complexity of Indonesian culture, where local tradition and external social, cultural and religious influences are manifested in the form and structure. Surakarta Kasunanan palace as a whole is considered a sacred place, gives a religious impression and reflects the characteristics of the kingdom. -

THE MAYAS A TRANSPLANTED INDIAN CIVILIZATION by Alain Verdier In several speeches given between 1979 and 1988, indian philosopher and historian P.R. Sarkar made startling revelaons concerning the Mayan civilizaBon. According to him, the Mayan civilizaBon was a « transplanted Indian civilizaBon. It went From South India to Central America during the Chola, Pandya and Pallava dynasBes oF the Indian Middle Ages. » He specifically indicated that it first migrated to Central America during the rule oF the Pallavas. This period corresponds to the Classic Period oF the Mayan civilizaBon (4th to 10th century) which also sees a peak in large-scale construcBons and urbanism. Due to the contacts between India and America, many centuries beFore the discovery oF that conBnent by Christopher Colombus, the Indian and the transplanted Mayan civilizaBon existed side by side. Sarkar actually explained that ‘Mayadviipa’ (Mayan island), the Sanskrit name For America, came From the name oF the Mayan civilizaBon. However, while the Indians had invented the wheel several millenia beFore, the Mayas lagged behind due to the Fact that they never knew its use. Sarkar once pointed out that a true civilizaBon must have Four signs oF progress : agriculture, wheel, dress and script. According to him, many old civilizaBons disapeared From the annals oF history because they simply could not invent the wheel and could not make carts and chariots. It was For that very reason that the Mayan civilizaBon had its downFall and was Forced in subsequent Bmes to concede deFeat at the hands oF other civilizaBons. Country and Project Name: Indonesia – East Java & Bali Power Distribution Strengthening Project 2. Project Development Objective: The expansion of the distribution network comprises erection of new poles, cable stringing, and installation of distribution transformers. 3. Expected Project Benefits: Construction of about 17,000 km distribution lines and installation of distribution transformers in East Java and Bali 4. Identified Project Environmental and Social Risks: Social Risks. It is envisaged that this project will require (i) use of no more than 0.2 m2 of land for installation of concrete poles and approximately 4m2 for installation of transformers (either in cabinet of between two concrete poles or on one pole); limited directional drilling (approx. 200-300m) to run cables under major roads and limited trenching (usually less than 500m) in urban environments, and (iii) possible removal of non-land assets (primarily trimming or felling of trees) for stringing of conductors. While restrictions on land use within the existing right of way apply, the land requirements for the distribution network (lines and transformers) are considered manageable with normal mitigation measures. Project activities will not (i) require land acquisition, (ii) cause physical or economic displacement; and/or (ii) result in adverse impacts to Indigenous Peoples groups and/or members of ethnic minorities. Environmental risks are principally induced by the establishment of the network across natural habitats and potential impact on fauna (in particular avifauna and terrestrial fauna susceptible to access the distribution lines or transformers such as monkeys or other tree dwelling scavenging animals that frequent semi urban environments), and the management of waste (e.g. -

Tujuannya adalah untuk mengetahui bagaimana proses dan bentuk strategi akulturasi masyarakat Batak di Pontianak. Ciri khas yang dimiliki Kalimantan Barat yaitu mengidentikkan etnis dengan agama tertentu, membuat etnis Batak selalu diidentikkan dengan agama Kristiani, agama yang sama dengan salah satu etnis yang pernah berkonflik. Masyarakat Batak di Pontianak dalam catatan sejarah, tidak pernah terlibat dalam konflik yang telah sering terjadi di Kalimantan Barat. Hal ini menjadi ketertarikan tersendiri untuk mengetahui bagaimana pola akulturasi masyarakat Batak di Pontianak. Metode yang digunakan adalah kualitatif deskriptif dengan teknik pengumpulan data yaitu wawancara dan observasi. -

By using descriptive, qualitative study methods, the confidential information of cross-border agreements (borders of the Transboundary Agreement) between Indonesia and the Philippines, especially on the island of Miangas, is an example of a dispute that can be clarified through the legal certainty of international Albitration. Abstrak Perhatian terhadap pulau-pulau terkecil dan terluar Indonesia harus lebih di tingkatkan lagi mengingat kasus sipadan dan ligitan yang berhasil di klaim Malaysia pada tahun 2002 hal yang serupa tidak ingin terjadi untuk pulau kecil lainnya seperti pulau miangas yang terletak di Sulawesi Utara Indonesia dan berbatasan langsung dengan Filipina. Melalui metode deskriptiv kualitatif kajian ini bermaksud menggambarkan implementasi dari perjanjian lintas batas perbatasan (Border Crossing Agreement) antara Indonesia dan Filipina khususnya terhadap pulau miangas, sehingga kasusnya yang masih menjadi sengketa perbatasan dapat di perjelas melalui kepastian hukum Albitrasi Internasional.
