  • SWE PIEDMONT Vs TUSCANY BACKGROUNDER
SWE PIEDMONT vs TUSCANY BACKGROUNDER ITALY Italy is a spirited, thriving, ancient enigma that unveils, yet hides, many faces. Invading Phoenicians, Greeks, Cathaginians, as well as native Etruscans and Romans left their imprints as did the Saracens, Visigoths, Normans, Austrian and Germans who succeeded them. As one of the world's top industrial nations, Italy offers a unique marriage of past and present, tradition blended with modern technology -- as exemplified by the Banfi winery and vineyard estate in Montalcino. Italy is 760 miles long and approximately 100 miles wide (150 at its widest point), an area of 116,303 square miles -- the combined area of Georgia and Florida. It is subdivided into 20 regions, and inhabited by more than 60 million people. Italy's climate is temperate, as it is surrounded on three sides by the sea, and protected from icy northern winds by the majestic sweep of alpine ranges. Winters are fairly mild, and summers are pleasant and enjoyable. NORTHWESTERN ITALY The northwest sector of Italy includes the greater part of the arc of the Alps and Apennines, from which the land slopes toward the Po River. The area is divided into five regions: Valle d'Aosta, Piedmont, Liguria, Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna. Like the topography, soil and climate, the types of wine produced in these areas vary considerably from one region to another. This part of Italy is extremely prosperous, since it includes the so-called industrial triangle, made up of the cities of Milan, Turin and Genoa, as well as the rich agricultural lands of the Po River and its tributaries.

  • Exploring the Chianti Region from Florence
13 DECEMBER 2013 CATERINA POMINI 6789 EXPLORING THE CHIANTI REGION FROM FLORENCE With its sweet rolling hills and terra-cotta-roofed villages, the Chianti Region remains one of the most stunning areas of Tuscany; although very much on the tourist trail, we assure you it hasn't lost its magic! Famous all over the world for the production of wine, the Chianti borders have never been clearly defined, but we could say that it extends from the southern provinces of Florence to Siena, covering the whole area between the two cities and stretching towards the east and west. The most visited Chianti towns are Castellina, Radda and Gaiole; however, this alternative one day itinerary will take you a little bit off the beaten track, giving you the opportunity to explore Badia a Passignano, Radda in Chianti, Volpaia and Montefioralle. Surrounded by vineyards and olive trees, the Badia a Passignano (Abbey of Passignano) dates back to the 11th century and dominates the village of the same name, which is no more than a cluster of houses and an osteria. However, with its walls and towers emerging from the middle of a cypress grove, it is definitely worth visiting – a photographer's delight. The Abbey's dining hall also houses a massive, 21-foot-wide Last Supper by Domenico and Davide Ghirlandaio, two great figures in the history of Florentine painting. The second stop on this tour is Radda in Chianti, located just 1 hour from Florence: the town has maintained its Medieval charm and is still surrounded by ancient city walls.

  • Chianti and Chianti Classico Docg
OUR SUB-REGIONS CHIANTI AND CHIANTI CLASSICO DOCG OVERVIEW In 1716, the grand duke of Tuscany made a proclamation defining the zone of production for the best wines in his domain. The primary wine region he described was Chianti, at that time made in four towns south of his home base in Florence. Chianti was a well-respected wine long before that, and it has remained one of Italy's most recognizable labels for more than three centuries. But that's not to say it hasn't undergone some changes. If Grand Duke Cosimo III were to return today, he would recognize his Chianti as what is now Chianti Classico DOCG, a denomination comprising parts of nine communes but based primarily on the four towns he had named. But he would be surprised to see how big Chianti has grown, with a large swath of territory all around Chianti Classico that makes up Chianti DOCG. Chances are, too, that Cosimo would be pleasantly surprised at how much better the wines are these days. Chianti and Chianti Classico are two separate but forever-linked denominations that make similar wines. The wines were traditionally a blend of several grape varieties, both red and white. Nowadays, almost all are still blends, but they lean more heavily on Sangiovese than they once did, and white grapes are not a significant ingredient (Chianti DOCG still allows up to 10% white varieties). Chianti Classico is the original zone and has some of the best terroir (which is why it was the original zone). The area is relatively large, 30 miles long between the southern suburbs of Florence and the northern reaches of Siena and 1012 miles wide.
