CO-WY AMP SPRING MEETING

Friday, April 12, 2019

University of Denver, CO

https://www.du.edu/ Welcome from DU

Dr. Nancy Sasaki Associate Dean of Natural Sciences and Mathematics http://cowyamp.colostate.edu Special Thanks!

University of Denver Anthea Johnson Rooen and Nancy Sasaki What is CO-WY AMP?

• The Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation was created in 1991 as a nationwide NSF initiative to address the critical need for a new generation of scientists and engineers.

• The Alliance for Minority Participation was officially sanctioned by NSF on November 1, 1996, and is currently in its 23rd year of operation.

• In October 2016, CO-AMP became CO-WY AMP with the addition of two Wyoming partners, the and Central Wyoming College.

• CO-WY AMP is comprised of 12 baccalaureate-degree granting institutions, 3 junior colleges, and 1 community college. University of Northern Colorado Joins CO-WY AMP

• University of Northern Colorado (UNC) joined CO-WY AMP as a partner institution in March 2019! Founded in 1889, UNC has more than 12,000 students enrolled from all 50 states and 49 countries. CO-WY AMP at UNC will reside under the new STEM Inclusive Excellence Collective (STEM IEC). • In the time span from 2009 to 2016, UNC has seen sizable increases in the percentage of female students (from 60% to 64%), minority students (15% to 30%), first generation students (31% to 37%), and transfer students (24% to 27%). In 2016, 11% of first-time freshmen declared a STEM major (244 of 2163 students); 45% of the first-time freshmen STEM cohort were first generation students and 38% were students of color. • UNC will bring a distinctly unique program to CO-WY AMP. Welcome, University of Northern Colorado! Representing Colorado and Wyoming

Travel distance from Riverton to Trinidad is approximately 550 miles. CO-WY AMP covers an area of approximately 60,000 square miles. Metro Denver STEM Alliance

• Three year, $1.5 million Louis Stokes B2B Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) grant.

• The Metro Denver STEM Alliance will work to increase the number of underrepresented minority students enrolling in science, technology, engineering and math programs at two-year schools. Community College of Aurora is the lead institution for the grant. Metro Denver STEM Alliance Staff
