4 Foreword

This directory provides a listing of Colorado state approved programs for the preparation of professional educational personnel. Our intent is that this publication will be a source of information regarding available educator preparation programs in Colorado institutions of higher learning as well as an aid to communication, guidance, and educational development.

The approved program approaCh to teacher education and certification has been in effect in Colorado since 1961 with the passage of the Teacher Certification Act of that year. From 1961 to 1968 the statu- tory State Board of Teacher Certification served in an advisory capacity to the State Board of Education in providing leadership for the improvement of teacher education and standards fro the certification of teachers. In 1968 the successor Colorado Commission of Teacher Education and Certification, repre- senting all levels of the profession, was established to serve in the advisory capacity to the State Board of Education and for the review and evaluation of programs for the preparation of educational personnel- in this state. The Educator Licensing Act of 1991 provided for the appointment of two professional standards boards: The Teacher and Special Services Professional Standards Board and the Principal and Administrator Professional Standards Board which advise the State Board of Education concerning educator licensing.

The standards for the approval of teacher education programs are included in the Rules for the Adminis- tration of the Education Licensing Act of 1991. As also prescribed in these Rules, the Office of Profes- sional Services of the Colorado Department of Education organizes evaluation teams, including selected representatives of all levels of the profession. On-site visits to Colorado institutions of higher education are conducted at least once every five years by these teams.

This directory contains a list of the programs for the preparation of educational personnel currently approved by the Colorado State Board of Education.
