Forvandling Transformation Forvandling | Transformation Forvandling Kirker er rom der to verdener møtes: den ufullkomne jordiske og den fullendte himmelske. I middelalderen var kirken et rom mettet av en særlig intensitet. Malerier, skulpturer og tak var smykket i sterke farger. Strimer av dagslys og blafrende talglys ble reflektert i forgylte overflater og utsøkte tekstiler, mens røkelse spredte skarpe og hellige dufter. Her kunne møter mellom Gud og mennesker skje. Denne boken viser gjenstander fra utstillingen Forvandling – tro og hellige gjenstander i middelalderen som kan ses i Historisk museum i Oslo fra 2019. Disse gjenstandene sto sentralt i forvandlingen mellom den menneskelige og den guddommelige verden. Churches are spaces where two worlds meet: the imperfect earthly world and the perfect heavenly realm. Medieval church interiors were saturated with a special intensity. Paintings, sculptures and ceilings were embellished with strong colours. Rays of daylight and flickering candlelight reflected off gilded surfaces and exquisite textiles, while burning incense infused the air with a holy fragrance. It was here that encounters between God and mankind could take place. Urnes Stave Church in the Sognefjord is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A stave church is a medieval wooden Christian church building. The name is derived from the buildings’ structure of post and lintel construction which is a type of timber framing, where the load-bearing posts are called stafr in Old Norse and stav in Norwegian. Two related church building types are also named for their structural elements, the post church and palisade church, but are often also called stave churches. Lom Stave Church is one of the biggest and most beautiful stave churches in Norway. It dates back to the 12th century and is still in use. The church is closed during church services. The church in Vågå is also worth a visit. The church is exceptionally well preserved and is one of the most distinctive stave churches in Norway.

    The remaining Stave Churches and different categories Simple Stave Churches: Eidsborg In Eidsborg the characteristic shingles are immediately apparent; the roof, the posts (staves) and pentice are completely clad with shingles. The church has a single, rectangular nave. Originally there was a narrower chancel which has been widened on two separate occasions. Garmo After a new parish church was built in Lom in 1879, Garmo Stave Church was pulled down and later re-constructed at Maihaugen Museum in Lillehammer. From the outside, Garmo Stave Church looks much like it did before it was demolished, but all the fittings and artwork come from other churches. Haltdalen Haltdalen Stave Church stands today at a museum in Trondheim. Parts of the church originate from Ålen Stave Church, while other parts are from Haltdalen. The shape of the building is similar to many Medieval stone churches. The interior is spartan with a simple altar and benches along the sides. It has stylistically been dated to around 1170. Hedalen Hedalen Stave Church probably dates to around 1165. The church was rebuilt in 1699 and became cruciform, the earlier chancel and apse were removed. The church has much of its Medieval decor preserved. The carved Madonna in the church is one of the finest and best- preserved saint figures in the country. Rollag Rollag Stave Church is mentioned in documents from 1425 but there has been a church on the same site long before this. The church got its current appearance in 1760. Rollag was originally a simple post Stave Church but has since been changed in many phases, both in length and height.

The word “stav” in Norwegian refers to the load bearing posts, hence the term stave church. Similar but an older type of construction is called the post church. Logs were split in two halves, rammed into the ground and given a roof. This was a simple form of construction but very strong. If set in gravel, the wall could last for decades, even centuries. Remains of buildings of this type are found over much of Europe. Stave churches were once common in Northern Europe. In Norway alone, it is believed between 1000 and 2000 were built. There is one remaining stave church in Sweden built around the year 1500 but all the other surviving ones are in Norway. Of the 28 or so surviving stave churches in Norway today, the Urnes Stave Church in Luster, beside the Sognefjord, is the only one in the world to be included on UNESO’s World Heri- tage List.

The performance, of which some verses have been passed down in writing, was an act of referential intermedia, insofar as the art form of skaldic poetry presented with woven words the content of a wood-carved medium that has long since rotted away. Hence, the composition of the poem combined with the carvings created a link that opens up a union between extant literary sources and material culture which contributes to expanding cultural insight. This study draws from a range of sources in order to answer central research questions regarding the appearance and qualities of the missing woodcarvings. Intermedia becomes interdisciplinary in the quest, as archaeological finds of Viking Age and early medieval woodcarvings and iconography help fill the void of otherwise missing artifacts. Old Norse literature provides clues to the mythic cultural values imbued in the wooden iconography.     ICWCT 2014 The International Course on Wood Conservation Technology Project report and evaluation The Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage (Riksantikvaren) is responsible for the practical implementation of the Norwegian Cultural Heritage Act and the objectives down by the Norwegian Parliament and the Ministry of Climate and Environment. 1 The 16th International Course on Wood Conservation Technology was held in Norway 21st May – 27th June 2014. The course is a collaboration between ICCROM and Riksantikvaren - the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage with NTNU (The Norwegian University of Science and Technology) responsible for the academic accreditation. The course was financed by Riksantikvaren though seven participants received scholarships this year which were contributed by the Norwegian Ministry of Environment. ICCROM also generously granted two scholarships. We would like to thank all the contributors for their support. The ICWCT 2014 consisted of 21 participants from 20 different countries: Europe 6, Americas 3, Africa 3 and Asia 8. There were 12 male and 9 female participants. During the 38 days of the course, a full program of tuition was prepared for 29 days with approximately 260 hours of tuition. The schedule was divided between lectures, practical exercises, workshops, field studies and museum visits. As part of the programme, each participant made a 20-minute presentation about his or her own work. The course spent 5 days at Norsk Folkemuseum working on case studies with the museum craftsmen and building a structure using traditional tools. The group also spent three busy days at the Furniture Workshop (Møbelverkstedet) with lectures and practical exercises. Four days were spent on an excursion to the western and inland parts of southern Norway.
