This is the third species of the genus, following the type species P. dunckeri (from Malay peninsula) and P. lehi (from northwestern Borneo), and distinguished from them by having: seven serrae on the second ctenactinium in adult males (vs. five in P. dunckeri and eight in P. le h i); 25–26 caudal vertebrae (vs. 27 in P. dunckeri and 28 in P. le h i ); approx- imately 5–19 teeth on paradentary (vs. 15–20 and 28 or more in P. dunckeri and P. le h i, respectively). All six examined males are dextral (vs. one and two known males are sinistral and dextral respectively in P. dunckeri, and all four know males are sinistral in P. le h i ). Parenti Abstract. Extensive collections of freshwater and coastal fi shes from throughout northwestern Borneo reveal a distinct phallostethid biota. Seven of the 23 species in the phallostethid subfamily Phallostethinae, known commonly as priapiumfi shes, live in northwestern Borneo and of those, three are endemics, including the new species described herein. Neostethus geminus, new species, is most closely related to N. bicornis Regan, 1916 with which it shares two, elongate curved ctenactinia (vs. one elongate and one short ctenactinium as in other Neostethus) in mature males, a brown blotch on the pelvic-fi n rays of the proctal side of immature males, and a fl eshy, hoodlike fold in females that includes the anus and genital and urinary pores. Neostethus geminus differs from N. bicornis in being smaller (adults reach no more than 25.7 mm SL vs. 31 mm SL), and in having males with a relatively compact priapium with a foreshortened, broad aproctal axial bone that meets but does not overlap the pulvinular appendage (vs. a relatively elongate priapium with a long and narrow aproctal axial bone that overlaps the pulvinular appendage medially) and thin, nearly translucent, broad papillary bone expanded distally into a tab (vs. having a short papillary bone). The primers for long-range PCR were designed specifically in the mitogenomic regions with low interspecific variability. The whole mitogenome of most species was amplified as three fragments using the following primer sets: for the region between position 2 500 bp and 7 300 bp (of mitogenome starting with tRNA-Phe), we used forward primers ZM2500F (5'-ACG ACC TCG ATG TTG GAT CAG GAC ATC C-3'), L2508KAW (Kawaguchi et al. 2001) or S-LA-16SF (Miya & Nishida 2000) and reverse primer ZM7350R (5'-TTA AGG CGT GGT CGT GGA AGT GAA GAA G-3'). The region between 7 300 bp and 12 300 bp was amplified using primers ZM7300F (5'-GCA CAT CCC TCC CAA CTA GGW TTT CAA GAT GC-3') and ZM12300R (5'-TTG CAC CAA GAG TTT TTG GTT CCT AAG ACC-3').
