First Inhabited by the Normans, That Occupied the Ancient Castle Near First inhabited by the Normans, that occupied the ancient castle near Sgarroni (Castrum Monticuli),it became, in the second half of 19th century, a strategic point for brigands after Italian unification. It was the shelter for some brigands as Carmine Crocco] and his subordinates Ninco Nanco (Giuseppe Summa), Giuseppe Caruso, Teodoro Gioseffi andGiovanni Fortunato. Nowadays it is a touristic place receptive for its natural environment and for mineral waters, due to the presence of some extinct volcanoes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monticchio IRCCS CROB Rionero in Vulture. The Sassi of Matera are ancient cave dwellings in the Italian city of Matera,Basilicata. Situated in the old town, they are composed of the Sasso Caveosoand the later Sasso Barisano. The Sassi originate from a prehistoric troglodyte settlement and are suspected to be among the first human settlements in Italy. There is evidence that people were living here as early as the year 7000 BC.The Sassi are houses dug into the calcarenitic rock itself, which is characteristic of Basilicata and Apulia, locally called "tufo" although it is not volcanic tuff or tufa. The Sassi of Matera were entered in the list of World Heritage by UNESCO in 1993 .https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matera Venusia was supposedly one of many cities said to be founded by the Greek hero Diomedes after the Trojan War. He dedicated Venusia to the goddess Aphrodite, also known as Venus, to appease her after the Trojans were defeated. The Aragonese castle, built in 1470 by Pirro del Balzo Orsini. It has a square plan with four cylindrical towers. It was turned into a residence by Carlo and Emanuele Gesualdo, who added also an internal loggia, the north-western wing and bastions used as prisons. From 1612 it was the seat of the Accademia dei Rinascenti. It is now home to the National Museum of Venosa, inaugurated in 1991, with ancient Roman and other findings up to the 9th century. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venosa The Lagopesole Castle is a medieval castle located on a mound ( 820 m above sea level) located between two rivers: Ofanto and Bradano. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castel_Lagopesole The Castle of Melfi in Basilicata is one of the most important medieval castles in Southern Italy. Its construction, at least the components still visible, dates back to the Norman conquest and has undergone significant changes over time, especially under the House of Anjou and the Crown of Aragon. • Northern Puglia & the Gargano Promontory
© Lonely Planet Publications 84 www.lonelyplanet.com 85 Northern Puglia & the Gargano Promontory Crowning Italy’s boot, the northern province of Foggia (the capitanata) is an attractive NORTHERN PUGLIA & THE NORTHERN PUGLIA & THE land of contrasting geographical bands, from the mountainous rocky spur of the Gargano GARGANO PROMONTORY Promontory to the vast flat tablelands of the Tavoliere and the gentle rolling hills of the Daunia Pre-Apennines. The Tavoliere is the wheatbowl of southern Italy, covering half of the capitanata in a 3000-sq-km geometric chequerboard of golden fields. Tracks across the plains bear witness to the centuries-old transhumance routes, the ancient droving trails or tratturi along which sheep and cattle were moved from Abruzzo to Puglia. The wheatfields surrounding the provincial capital of Foggia gently give way to the wetlands and salt works of Margherita di Savoia on the southeast coast, a region famous for its prolific birdlife. To the west, the Tavoliere merges into the undulating foothills, shallow valleys and wooded slopes of the beautiful Daunia mountains. Here, castles and towers of the medieval hilltop towns watch over Foggia’s Pre-Apennine border. Puglia’s only mountainous zone is the stunning Gargano Promontory, a blunt spur of limestone cliffs and dense forest jutting into the blue Adriatic Sea. Its landscape, flora and fauna are a geographical anomaly in Puglia’s Mediterranean mezzogiorno, more Croatian than southern Italian. Millions of years ago the Gargano was separated from the mainland by a thin strip of ocean. Now its unique beauty and summer seaside resorts are a favourite with Italian and German tourists.

History knows nothing of spontaneous generation; the chain of cause and effect is unbroken, and how ever modest be the scale on which an historical work is cast, the reader has a right to ask that it should give him some idea, not only of what happened, but of why it happened. A catalogue of dates and names is as meaningless as the photo graph' of a crowd. In the following retrospect, I have attempted to trace the principal factors that worked towards Italian unity. The Liberation of Italy is a cycle waiting to be turned into an epic. iii IV Preface In other words, it presents the appearance of a series of detached episodes, but the parts have an intimate connection with the whole, which, as time wears on, will constantly emerge into plainer light. Every year brings with it the issue of documents, letters, memoirs, that help to unravel the tangled threads in which this subject has been enveloped, and which have made it less generally understood than the two other great struggles of the century, the American fight for the Union, and the unifica tion of Germany.

• Resistance to Institutions and Cultural Distance: Brigandage in Post
Resistance to Institutions and Cultural Distance Brigandage in Post-Unification Italy* Giampaolo Lecce Laura Ogliari Tommaso Orlando § This version: July 2018 Abstract We study how cultural distance affects the rejection of imposed institutions. To do so, we exploit the transplantation of Piedmontese institutions on Southern Italy that oc- curred during the Italian unification. We assemble a novel and unique dataset containing municipal-level information on episodes of brigandage, a form of violent uprising against the unitary government. We use the geographic distance from local settlements of Pied- montese descent as a proxy for the cultural distance between each municipality and the new rulers. We find that cultural distance from the origins of the transplanted institutions is significantly associated with more intense resistance to these institutions. We provide evidence that our results are partially explained by a clash between the content of the Piedmontese institutions and local social norms. Our findings further suggest that the re- jection of transplanted institutions may have a long-lasting effect on political participation. Keywords: Institutions, Institutional Transplantations, Culture, Social Unrest, Electoral Turnout JEL classification: N43, D74, P16, Z10 *The authors are indebted to Maristella Botticini, Nicola Gennaioli and Guido Tabellini for many fruitful conversations and for their continuing support.
