Ukiran gorga merupakan salah satu bentuk kesenian ukiran khas kebudayaan adat batak. Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui berbagai bentuk dari ukiran gorga pada rumah adat batak. Bentuk ukiran gorga bermacam-macam, sehingga pada setiap bentuk ukiran gorga memiliki makna yang berbeda-beda. Oleh karena itu, tulisan ini juga bertujuan untuk memahami makna yang ada pada ukiran gorga. Dalam pemaknaan ukiran gorga menggunakan pendekatan semiotika. Semiotika ialah pendekatan ilmu yang mempelajari tentang tanda. Pada ukiran gorga rumah adat batak memiliki makna kehidupan, yang mana hal ini tergambar melalui bentuk-bentuk pada setiap ukiran.     Deconstructing Bataknese Gorga Computationally Hokky Situngkir [[email protected]] Dept. Computational Sociology Bandung Fe Institute Abstract The carved and painted decorations in traditional Batak houses and buildings, gorga, are the source of their exoticism. There are no identical patterns of the ornaments within Batak houses and the drawings are closely related to the way ancient Batak capture the dynamicity of the growing “tree of life”, one of central things within their cosmology and mythology. The survey of ornaments of Batak houses and buildings in Northern Sumatera Indonesia has made us possible to observe the complex pattern. The fractal dimensions of the geometrical shapes in gorga are calculated and they are conjectured into 1.5-1.6, between the dimensional of a line and a plane. The way gorga is drawn is captured by using some modification to the turtle geometry of L-System model, a popular model to model the dynamics of growing plants. The result is a proposal to see Bataknese gorga as one of traditionalheritage that may enrich the studies to the generative art. Introduction The Indonesian Bataknese decorates their traditional houses and buildings with carved or painted ornaments known as “gorga”. The touch of the traditional knowledge with modernity has even yielded many modern buildings in Northern Sumatera, Indonesia, decorated with the traditional gorga, for example hotels, churches, governmental offices, community buildings, et cetera, expressing the identity of Batak people throughout the country. However, while the traditions have been slowly declined, we are still lack of studies due to the geometry of the ornamentation within gorga.

Through a semiotics WAY, the gate is an architectural masterpiece describing the cultural characteristics of a human group. Javanese people are culturally cultured people who still maintain their tradition to date. The shape of the building or house is not just a form or artwork, but for the Javanese people, the building is associated with tradition and belief. Therefore, the pattern and shape of the gate structure are influenced by the tradition of Javanese Cosmology. The diversity of physical formations in the island of Java until today is still evident in its existence. The Javanese society is adaptive to the advancement of the times but still maintains tradition.

    BAB 3 KEPURBAKALAAN PADANG LAWAS: TINJAUAN GAYA SENI BANGUN, SENI ARCA DAN LATAR KEAAGAMAAN Tinjauan seni bangun (arsitektur) kepurbakalaan di Padang Lawas dilakukan terhadap biaro yang masih berdiri dan sudah dipugar, yaitu Biaro Si Pamutung, Biaro Bahal 1, Biaro Bahal 2, dan Biaro Bahal 3. Sedangkan rekonstruksi bentuk dilakukan terhadap unsur-unsur bangunan biaro-biaro di Padang Lawas yang sudah tidak berada dalam konteksnya lagi, atau masih insitu dan berada dengan konteksnya tetapi dalam keadaan fragmentaris. Rekonstruksi tersebut dilakukan berdasarkan tulisan dan foto (gambar) para peneliti yang sudah melakukan penelitian di situs tersebut pada masa lalu. Tinjauan terhadap gaya seni arca dilakukan terhadap arca-arca logam untuk mengetahui bagaimana gaya seni arca tinggalan di Padang Lawas, apakah mempunyai kesamaan dengan gaya seni arca dari tempat lain baik di Indonesia maupun luar Indonesia. Gaya seni arca juga dapat memberikan gambaran periodisasinya secara relatif. Adapun periodisasi situs secara mutlak didapatkan berdasarkan temuan prasasti-prasasti yang menuliskan pertanggalan. Prasasti- prasasti yang ditemukan di Padang Lawas sebagian besar berisi tentang mantra- mantra dalam melakukan suatu upacara keagamaan, oleh karena itu latar keagamaan situs dapat diketahui berdasarkan isi prasasti. Traditional jewelry has its own unique dimension in terms of design process, production techniques, and aesthetic aspects that combine several elements of material. Along with the development of industrialization and market segmentation becomes broader, jewelry becomes an appealing commodity. Time flies and jewelry has shifted from a meaning of self-philosophy of the user into a universal meaning as a consumptive identity in cultural society. Filigree itself is one of the oldest techniques that have been abandoned for a long period of time because some reasons, especially about the process and other considerations.     KING SANJAYA AND HIS SUCCESSORS W. J. van der Meulen S.J.* In an earlier article* 1 I ventured to identify the Yava country of Sanjaya's charter, with the Jawa-Holing of the Chinese reports, and to locate it in the en­ virons of the Dieng plateau. This charter opens with the preliminary statement that in 732 the king erected his lingga on a mountain known as ’’the permanent portion,” and then proceeds to give praise to 3iva, Brahma and Visnu and to de­ pict the marvelous and felicitous^country of Yava. Owned by the spirits and inti­ mately connected with a famous Sivaite yoga precinct that was covered with sacred tfHha, Yava was located in the Elephant-Enclosure-Country. All the elements of this description are fully applicable to the Dieng and to no other (less famous) center of the Siva cult. Moreover, no other such center is known to have its roots in the eighth century. Such an identification is also supported by the men­ tion of the name ”Lang-pi-ya” in the Chinese reports ( i .e ., the Lampyar or Prahu peak), from which the king liked to gaze down over the sea, and in a more general way by the evident location of Jawa-Holing along the north coast of Java. 2 I further argued that Sanjaya* s charter testifies to the evolution of the coun­ try into a kind of local super-power during the eighth century, a conclusion which is in accordance with what can be deduced from the Chinese evidence. 3 The second part of the text makes this even more obvious.
