This momentous event gave the Philippines the distinction of being the first independent Republic in Asia. In addition, the declaration ushered in the constitution of the central government of the new Republic, officially marking the claim of Filipinos to sovereignty after more than three centuries of Spanish colonial rule. The inauguration of the First Philippine Republic has been regarded as of equal significance with the Declaration of Independence on June 12, 1898 at Kawit, Cavite, and all other historic events leading towards the freedom of all Filipinos from foreign subjugation. In recognition of the importance of this date in Philippine history, former President Benigno S. Aquino III issued Proclamation No. 533 on January 9, 2013, declaring January 23 of every year as “/1/Y/vy ng Republikang Filipino, 1899." The foregoing measure seeks to declare January 23 of every year as a special working holiday to increase public awareness on the significance of the declaration of the First Philippine Republic, ensure meaningful observance of the same, and encourage people’s participation in the activities and programs that are to be spearheaded by the National Historical Commission.

Aguilar Jr.* The most contentious issue in the Revolutionary Congress that crafted the 1899 Malolos Constitution pertained to the separation of church and state, which won by a mere one vote. Until now this episode in Philippine history has not received a satisfactory explanation, which this article seeks to offer. The debate in Malolos, as argued here, was profoundly divisive because the two sides were driven by dif- fering visions of national community. A crucial point was the Filipinization of the Catholic Church, which the proponents of church–state unity championed and which their opponents sidestepped. Even as the debate raged, however, Aguinaldo’s revolutionary government acted on the church–state issue out of political expedi- ency. In the end, the issue that Filipino elites could not resolve was settled by US colonialism, which imposed church–state separation without Filipinization.     THE AMERICAN COLONIAL AND CONTEMPORARY TRADITIONS The American tradition in Philippine architecture covers the period from 1898 to the present, and encompasses all architectural styles, such as the European styles, which came into the Philippines during the American colonial period. This tradition is represented by churches, schoolhouses, hospitals, government office buildings, commercial office buildings, department stores, hotels, movie houses, theaters, clubhouses, supermarkets, sports facilities, bridges, malls, and high-rise buildings. New forms of residential architecture emerged in the tsalet, the two-story house, and the Spanish-style house. History The turn of the century brought, in the Philippines, a turn in history. Over three centuries of Spanish rule came to an end, and five decades of American rule began. The independence won by the Philippine Revolution of 1896 was not recognized by Spain, nor by the United States, whose naval and military forces had taken Manila on the pretext of aiding the revolution. In 1898 Spain ceded the Philippines to the United States, and after three years of military rule the Americans established a civil government. With a new regime came a new culture. The English language was introduced and propagated through the newly established public school system.

    Learn Philippine history through coins and bills Posted at 12:09 pm June 18, 2010 By Anna Valmero MAKATI CITY, METRO MANILA – Aside from allowing us to buy our basic needs and sometimes, reward ourselves with our wants, money can be a good way to learn about Philippine history. Heroes and national symbols have figured prominently in peso coins, while most of the bills or banknotes we use today have images of the country’s past presidents. But did you know that the design of the Philippine money, as we know it today, was a product of a long history of design changes? Early accounts of pre-Hispanic trade relations between the Philippines and China listed gold, wax, cotton, small shells, dye-wood, carabao horns, and metal bells as accepted forms of money. The Yellow Money Cowry, a kind of shell, served as a medium of exchange among Filipinos in terms of trading goods. Then three centuries ago, Filipinos used piloncitos or gold beads as coins with stamps of Ma from the Filipino alphabet alibata. After 1521, the Filipinos used hilis kalamay, or the local popular term for macuquinas, irregularly shaped coins hammered in Mexico that bore the seals of Spanish rulers such as Charles II, Philip IV and Philip V. Later, the barilla – made from crude bronze or copper – also reached the country through the galleon trade. During the revolutionary period, the Philippine republic under Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, the Filipinos minted their own coins and printed their own paper currency in one- and five-peso denominations. The notes were printed as Republika Filipina Papel Moneda de Un Peso Y Cinco Pesos, which looked similar to ticket stubs we have today.
