Scott illustration numbers have been used in all but a few Instances as less likely to be changed than the individual stamp numbers, so that even the beginner can readily determine from the catalog which stamp carries the illustration and how many there are of any particular issue. Countries are arranged in alphabetical order, in preference to that by possession, for easier reference, as only the advanced historian can readily recall in many cases which country belongs to which in this changing world. Illustration numbers for colonies have been omitted where the illustration is essentially the same as for the mother country or the illustration varies only due to over- print, surcharge or country title. Churches and similar institutions that were formerly Catholic have been designated with an asterisk. Some few listed in former editions, particularly of the Balkan area, have been omitted as being too remote in interest for the average collector. The list under Biographical should undoubtedly be much larger, particylarly for the South and Central American Countries, but the available encyclopedias give but meager details at best, and rarely any mention of the individuals, religious affiliations or his devotion thereto. Crosses and Crucifix designs have been listed in so far as they seem to appear with a religious connotation, rather than merely because they are part of an emblem, coat of arms, etc. The collector is, of course, free to add or delete, as the list is intended as a suggestive aid to those interested in items of Catholic significance. Space does not permit the naming of, or the rendering of adequate thanks to collectors, both clerical and lay, organizations and publications, for the many previous suggestions and historical references to designs that otherwise would have been overlooked. May they find satisfaction for their efforts in the spread of the hobby and the increased religious interest of other collectors to whom the list has been of benefit. la. • From a Far-Away Country of the Polish II Corps Heroes
Special edition Warsaw-Monte Cassino May 18, 2019 GLORY TO THE HEROES! ETERNAL BATTLEFIELD GLORY Dear Readers, n the glorious history of the Polish army, there were many battles where Iour soldiers showed exceptional heroism and sacrifice. The seizure of the Monte Cassino abbey has its special place in the hearts and memory of Poles. General Władysław Anders wrote in his order: “Long have we waited for this moment of retaliation and revenge on our eternal enemy. […] for this ruffianly attack of Germany on Poland, for partitioning Poland jointly with the Bolsheviks, […] for the misery and tragedy of our Fatherland, for our sufferings and exile.” The soldiers of the Polish II Corps did not waste this opportunity and seized the reinforced position in the abbey’s ruins, which had earlier been resisting the gunfire, bombing and attacks of the Allied forces. Polish determination and heroism broke the fierce defense line of the German forces. This victory was however paid very dearly for. On the hillside of Monte Cassino over 900 soldiers were killed, and almost 3,000 wounded. Still, the Monte Cassino success, although paid for with blood, paved the way to independent Poland. Saint John Paul II, when talking about the Battle of Monte Cassino, said about a live symbol of will to live, of sovereignty. These words perfectly define the attitude ...from a far-away country of the Polish II Corps heroes. They proved to be determined, patriotic, and The title might not be original, but it perfectly reflects the Polish-Italian full of will to fight. They were respected relations.

  • Philip Melanchthon in the Writings of His Polish Contemporaries
ODRODZENIE I REFORMACJA W POLSCE ■ SI 2017 ■ PL ISSN 0029-8514 Janusz Tazbir Philip Melanchthon in the Writings of his Polish Contemporaries Over thirty years ago Oskar Bartel, a distinguished scholar of the history of the Polish Reformation, bemoaned how little was known about the relations between preceptor Germaniae and the movement. In an article about the familiarity with Melanchthon, both as person and his oeuvre, in Poland, Bartel wrote: “wir besitzen einige Werke, meist Broschüren über Luther, Calvin, sogar Hus und Zwingli, aber ich habe keine über Melanchton gefunden”.1 Bartel’s article provided a recapitulation, if somewhat incomplete, of the state of research at the time, and essentially stopped at the death of the Reformer. There- fore, in this study I would like to point to the results of the last thirty years of research, on the one hand, and highlight the post-mortem impact of Melanchthon’s writings and the reflection of his person in the memories of the next generations, on the other. The new information about the contacts Melanchthon had with Poland that has come to light since the 1960s is scattered across a number of articles or monographs; there is to date no separate study devoted to the German Reformer. Only a handful of contributions have been published. No wonder therefore that twenty years after the publication of Bartel’s article, Roman Nir begins his study of corre- spondence between Melanchthon and Krzycki thus: “Relatively little 1 O. • Myanmar 500 Years Jubilee - Jesuit Footsteps Through History
Myanmar 500 years Jubilee - Jesuit Footsteps through History A sacred fever grips the streets of Yangon as thousands descend from yonder lands of Myanmar for the historic 500 years Jubilee of Christian presence. Kachins from the northern most dioceses have come in thousands. One group led by Our Joseph Aik Maung. They have occupied all empty spaces in and around the churches, halls, hindu temples . In a commendable show of Christian fellowship, the Yangon Catholics are feeding these thousands. The church proudly show cases its colourful mosaic of seven ethnic groups. Neither the war nor displacement deterred the Kachins from undertaking this long journey – crossing rivers and mountains and a journey that took nearly two full days. There is a riot of colors in the streets of Yangon. Christianity in its full unity and diversity proclaims its presence in thousands today. Traces of Christianity were found even before tenth century. Surprising these were from China, long suspected to be one of the early Christian settlement. Stable presence occurred with the arrival of Portuguese in the 16th Century. Dominicans, the Jesuits and the Augustinians selflessly devoted themselves to promoting Christianity. In later eras were to be filled by other Institutes: the Barnabites, the Oblates of the Virgin Mary, the Foreign Mission Society of Paris, PIME, the St. Columban Missionaries and the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette. The Catholic Church has written glorious pages in Burma, in the field of educational and social-promotional work, if we think only of the first Burmese alphabet prepared by the Barnabite, Mons. G.M.

No. Introduced by Senator Aquilino uKoko” Pimentel HI AN ACT DECLARING THE TWENTY THIRD DAY OF JANUARY OF EVERY YEAR AS A SPECIAL \\ ORKING HOLIDAY IN THE ENTIRE PHILIPPINES, TO COMMEMORATE THE DECLARATION OF THE FIRST PHILIPPINE REPUBLIC ON JANUARY 23, 1899 AT THE BARASOAIN CHURCH, MALOLOS, BULACAN, APPROPRIATING FUNDS THEREFOR, AND FOR OTHER PU RPOSES EXPLANATORY NOTE On January 23, 1899, the First Philippine Republic (also known as the ""Malolos Republic") was inaugurated at Barasoain Church, Malolos, Bulacan. This momentous event gave the Philippines the distinction of being the first independent Republic in Asia. In addition, the declaration ushered in the constitution of the central government of the new Republic, officially marking the claim of Filipinos to sovereignty after more than three centuries of Spanish colonial rule. The inauguration of the First Philippine Republic has been regarded as of equal significance with the Declaration of Independence on June 12, 1898 at Kawit, Cavite, and all other historic events leading towards the freedom of all Filipinos from foreign subjugation. In recognition of the importance of this date in Philippine history, former President Benigno S. Aquino III issued Proclamation No. 533 on January 9, 2013, declaring January 23 of every year as “/1/Y/vy ng Republikang Filipino, 1899." The foregoing measure seeks to declare January 23 of every year as a special working holiday to increase public awareness on the significance of the declaration of the First Philippine Republic, ensure meaningful observance of the same, and encourage people’s participation in the activities and programs that are to be spearheaded by the National Historical Commission.
