TALKING ABOUT THE AESTHETIC OF THE HUMANE: EXPLORING COMMUNICATION IN THE CONTENT AND STRUCTURE OF HEINRICH BÖLL’S EARLY NOVELS A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School Of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts By David Sebastian Low January 2009 © 2009 David Sebastian Low ABSTRACT In his Frankfurter Vorlesungen Heinrich Böll attempts to formulate an aesthetic program that explains how the moral content of writing might be inscribed in its structure. This “aesthetic of the humane” would involve the subject-matter and orientation of a work’s content toward the representation of the historically real and the truth content of that reality. The “real” as it is in the historical world and that “reality” that contains the truth content of the experienced world are to be unified in the aesthetic of the humane, and it is the author who is burdened with the task of mediating the two for her reader. In many of his essays Böll privileges communication as an inherently moral act, and emphasizes the responsibility of the author to use his vocation humanely. In order to understand how Böll realized the concept of the aesthetic of the humane in his own writing we may look to how he uses communication within his texts to demonstrate moral action. Communication between characters at the level of plot corresponds to the author’s obligation to depict the “real” historical component, and communicative structures in the matrix of his novels relate to the “reality” of mediated experience provided as commentary by the author to the reader. -

humanities Article Narrating a Valley in Max Frisch’s Der Mensch erscheint im Holozän: Material Agency, Rain, and the Geologic Past Kiley M. Kost Department of German and Russian, Carleton College, Northfield, IL 55057, USA; [email protected] Abstract: The complex narrative composition of image and text in Max Frisch’s Der Mensch erscheint im Holozän discloses entanglements between humans and nonhuman entities that impact the narrative and that demand careful consideration. The story depicts the aging protagonist’s struggle with memory loss and his careful examination of the valley’s mountain formations in fear of a landslide. In this analysis, I show that both of these threats can be read as entangled with nonhuman agents. By focusing on the material dimension of the text, two central and related shifts occur: the background element of rain becomes foregrounded in the narrative, and the natural formations of the valley that are assumed to be static are revealed to be dynamic. These shifts lead to an interpretation of Frisch’s text focused on the impacts of rain and the temporal scale of the text’s geologic dimension. Approaching the text through the lens of material ecocriticism unveils the multiple agencies at play, decenters the human, and illustrates the embodied experience of climate change. Abstract The story atmosphere includes the setting, scene components, and all the descriptions the author uses to further advance the plot, events, and introduction of characters. In a good story, none of the words and parts of the story are futile and are used in the direction of the author's purpose for the artistic treatment of events and characters of the story. In the novel "The Silent Angel" by Heinrich Boll, the author uses tools such as dark and negative color like yellow and black, describes the scenes and people with negative words and uses several statues to create a cool and sober atmosphere of war also confusion and discouragement of people and inconvenient events and shows them more tangible and powerful to the reader of the story. Heinrich Boll, using the power of symbols in colors and words, brings the reader fully into the story atmosphere and creates all the emotions in the reader that can be seen and received from the warrior city and its people. It asks how far they established principles of ‘intellectual exile’ that have gained currency in the writings of Edward Said and Vilém Flusser. It compares Schiller’s Ästhetische Briefe with Adorno’s reception of them; it examines concepts of exile in Goethe’s ‘Erste Epistel’ and Unterhaltungen deutscher Ausgewanderten. Finally, it asks how elegy fits into a poetics of exile. The article suggests a fresh perspective on Weimar Classicism, and widened scope for Exilforschung. -

Es enthalt einige handschriftliche Notizen von der Hand Jacob Grimms. Auf dem Vorsatz steht: >>Dem Stil nach vom Vf. des sonst schlechteren Buchs: Schwarze Rettiche Leipzig 179. Zum Neuen Jahr 1812- im October 1811 -<<. Dieser Hinweis bezieht sich auf [Johann Gottlieb Munch:] Schwarze Rettiche, gebaut von meinem Haus-Satyr. Leipzig 1798. (Standort: Bayer. Staatsbibliothek Miinchen). Die Satiren richten sich z. B. auf Humanitatsapostel mit guten Absichten und schlechten Erfolgen; auf Zeitungsschreiber, die nur Wind machen; auf einen Kantianer, bei dessen Tatigkeit nichts Brauch bares herauskommt; auf eingebildete Schulmeister und ahnliches der Art. Große Erwartungen und bittere Enttäuschung: Grimm, Kolbenheyer und Stapel in ihrem Verhältnis zur NSDAP 5.1 Frühe Unterstützung und erste Fühlungnahme 1923–1930/31 Ich würde es nicht begrüßen, wenn der Radika- lismus in unveränderter Form Oberhand auf lange Dauer erhielte, aber wenn der National- sozialismus nicht gekommen wäre, man hätte ihn erfinden müssen.1 Schon sehr früh nach dem Zusammenbruch des „Dritten Reichs“ hat Veit Valen- tin hellsichtig hervorgehoben, wie weitgehend die Geschichte des Nationalsozia- lismus und seines Aufstiegs als eine „Geschichte seiner Unterschätzung“2 verstan- den werden kann. Speziell zur Erklärung der illusorischen Zähmungskonzeptio- nen3 seitens der Eliten des politischen Konservatismus ist das Interpretament der „Unterschätzung“ fraglos von zentraler Bedeutung. Im Falle von Grimm, Kolben- heyer und Stapel würde hinsichtlich ihres Verhältnisses zur NSDAP vor 1933 ein allein auf „Unterschätzung“ abzielender analytischer Zugriff indes deutlich zu kurz greifen. Gewiss: Auch sie perzipierten die NS-Bewegung mitunter leichtfer- tig als eine vermeintlich rein episodenhafte Erscheinung, die kurzfristig für eigene Zwecke instrumentalisiert werden könnte und sollte.4 Eine erschöpfende Erläute- rung ihrer Einstellungen ist damit jedoch keineswegs gewonnen. Ihre Wahrneh- mung der NS-Bewegung war weder konstant, noch blieb sie ohne Ambivalenzen, wie ein Blick in die Quellen rasch lehrt. Die Annahme, Grimm, Kolbenheyer und Stapel wären sich in dem hier interessierenden Zeitfenster stets sicher gewesen, wie sie sich zum Nationalsozialismus stellen sollten und wie dieser als politische und soziale Bewegung einzuschätzen sei, wäre irrig und ginge an der empirischen Realität vorbei.
