Marianne Breslauer was born on 20 November into a wealthy, art-interested family. Breslauer then moved to Paris, where Helen Hessel, fashion correspondent with the Frankfurter Zeitung and a friend of the family, arranged for her to meet Man Ray. Breslauer was hoping to be able to work with him, but instead, the famous Surrealist encouraged the young photographer to go her own way, without his help. She took his advice and, using her camera, explored the fascinating French capital. But she was also taken by Marianne Breslauer: Photographs artistic trends of the New Vision movement, which was attracting a lot of attention in the circle around the Deutsche Werkbund and the Bauhaus. Her photographs soon found their way into the print media. Her first position as a photographer was in the photo-studio of the publisher Ullstein, where she Marianne Breslauer: Photographs under Elsbeth Heddenhausen, who also trained at the Lette-Haus. While with Ullstein, Breslauer perfected her handling of technique, but she soon realised that the swift eye for a sensation Marianne Breslauer: Photographs the audacity required Marianne Breslauer: Photographs a photo-reporter were not really her style. Marianne Breslauer: Photographs personal gaze was focused more on people and details on the periphery of Marianne Breslauer: Photographs life. She never used Marianne Breslauer: Photographs camera as an instrument of invasion or superiority, preferring instead to inconspicuously observe events around her. Many of her photographs were reproduced in the newly-emerging illustrated newspaper supplements and magazines published by Ullstein, like Die Dame, Funk-Stunde and Der Querschnitt, but also in other German-language and occasionally even international publications. InBreslauer left the Ullstein studio and started working as an independent photographer. Until she remained active in the fields of fashion, portraiture, advertising, travel, urban life and staged illustrations for the print media. She repeatedly portrayed friends in Berlin, as well as colleagues and acquaintances from the international art world. Beginning in the early s, Marianne Breslauer travelled through many European countries and in the Near East, alone or Marianne Breslauer: Photographs friends, colleagues or her later husband, the art dealer Walter Feilchenfeldt. Inshe felt drawn to Palestine and was enthralled by the world of the Orient. As in Paris, there too she Marianne Breslauer: Photographs the local people in the streets and alleys of Jerusalem, or portrayed her beautiful friend Djemila, for whose wedding she had gone there specially. She concentrated instead on pictorially narrating the cultural peculiarities of the country, its architecture, its inhabitants and their characteristics. However she was unable to publish the fruits of that Spanish journey in Germany. The National Socialists had brought the German Press into line, and as a non-Arian, Marianne Breslauer was Marianne Breslauer: Photographs longer able to publish under her own name. Even afterBreslauer repeatedly returned to Berlin. In however, political developments forced her to leave her native city and move to Marianne Breslauer: Photographs. That same year she married Walter Feilchenfeldt and inafter the occupation of the Netherlands by the National Socialists, the couple emigrated to Switzerland, where they lived first Marianne Breslauer: Photographs St. Gallen, then in Ascona and finally in Zurich. There, until her death inBreslauer dedicated herself totally to her family and to art dealing.     Zum Erstdruck von Annemarie Schwarzenbachs Georg Trakl von Walter Fähnders (Osnabrück) und Andreas Tobler (Berlin/Bern) Am 9. April 1931 schreibt Annemarie Schwarzenbach an Erika Mann: Ich weiss nicht genau wie es mir geht, ich wohne in einem Haus in der Stadt, schlafe schlecht, sitze treu am Schreibtisch ganz versoffen in Papieren, Büchern, schwarzem Kaffee, Rauch, Fleiss u. Melancholie. So nämlich musste man still- heiter oder melancholisch werden. Meistens bin ich das Erstere. Das Alleinsein ist wunderlich.1 Es ist ein Donnerstag – der letzte von den insgesamt drei Tagen, die die noch nicht ganz 23jährige Doktorandin Annemarie Schwarzenbach zum Abfassen ihrer Prüfungsarbeit in ihrem Nebenfach ‚Deutsche Literatur seit Goethes Tod’ zur Verfügung hat. Als sie an ihrer Arbeit schreibt, wohnt sie bei ihrer Freundin Erna Mende (1908-2001) in der Dreikönigstrasse 37 unweit der Seepromenade in Zürich.2 Mein Thema heisst „Georg Trakl“ u. ist fesselnd u. hübsch. [...] Wenn ich eine Weile über Georg Trakl geschrieben habe, gehe ich mit [Thomas Manns 1922 erstmals erschienenem Aufsatzband] „Rede und Antwort“ in den Garten, einen richtigen Stadtgarten mit Kies u. Moosgeruch. Ich lese „Rede u. Antwort“. Dann gehe ich wieder zu Trakl u. dem schrecklich unordentlichen Schreibtisch, oder ans Fenster. In letzterem Fall sehe ich Autos, Fords, Victorys u. Radfahrer u. merke dass ich Kopfschmerzen habe.3 Aufgewachsen war Annemarie Schwarzenbach (1908-1942), die aus einer der vermögendsten und angesehensten Schweizer Industriellenfamilien entstammte4, auf dem am linken Zürichseeufer gelegenen Landgut Bocken. Nach privatem Schulunterricht bei den Eltern bis zu ihrem fünfzehnten Lebensjahr, dem Besuch der Zürcher Privatschule Dr. Götz-Azzolini und des Hochalpinen Töchterinstituts Fetan (Unterengadin) legte sie im Herbst 1927 ihre Matura ab.5 Zum Wintersemester 1927/28 immatrikulierte sie sich an der Universität Zürich im Hauptfach Geschichte6, das sie dort nach eigenen Angaben „mit der Unterbrechung eines kurzen Aufenthaltes in Nordamerika“7 zunächst zwei Semester studierte.

Schwarzenbach saw herself primarily as a writer. Yet she was also a pioneer of photojournalism in Switzerland. Around 300 of her texts appeared in Swiss magazines and newspapers during her lifetime. From 1933, they were increasingly accompanied by her own pho- tographs. However, since the majority of these images remained unpublished, the quality and scope of her work as a photographer has been relatively unknown until recently. Most of Schwarzenbach’s photographs were taken during her travels, which between 1933 and 1942 took her across Europe, to the Near East and Central Asia, to the United States and Central and North Africa. Her work as a journalist, but also her upper class background and her status as the wife of a diplomat granted her an extraordinary freedom of travel for the period. Her images and writings are closely intertwined and document the upheavals, tensions, and conflicts of the period leading up to World War II: the consequences of the Great Depression, the hope for social progress, the threat of National Socialism, the effects of modernization and industrialization, or the European fascination with the “orient”.

Schwarzenbach se considérait avant tout comme une écrivaine. Mais dans son pays, elle était aussi une pionnière de la photographie de reportage. Quelque 300 textes d’elle sont parus, de son vivant, dans des revues et des journaux suisses. À partir de 1933, ces textes sont de plus en plus souvent accompagnés de ses propres photos. Mais comme la plupart de ses photographies est restée inédite, la qualité et l’étendue de son travail de photographe sont encore peu connues. La grande majorité de ces photographies ont été prises lors de voyages qui ont conduit Schwarzenbach au Proche-Orient et en Asie centrale, aux USA, en Europe, en Afrique centrale et en Afrique du Nord, entre 1933 et 1942. Ayant une activité de journaliste, et étant par ailleurs issue de la haute bourgeoisie et femme de diplomate, elle a bénéficié d’une liberté, exceptionnelle pour l’époque, dans ses déplacements jusqu’au début de la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

Making their selection they were inspired by the question if these persons are missed nowadays and wished to be among us again. Marlene was selected due to her sense of decency and to her outlook in general as well as to her political outlook by author Katja © Tangram Film Nicodemus. We met Chritian Bauer for the first time in 1992 when we invited him to make the documentary “Das zweite Leben der Marlene Dietrich”. Well, we heard of him before as he won a price for his doc on the moving of the Munich airport. If he's good in describing that move he must be even better in showing the shipment of the Marlene Dietrich archive from New York to Berlin.

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com A widely-traveled writer and photojournalist, Annemarie Schwarzenbach documented social conditions from Afghanistan to Alabama and was one of the pioneering women of the profession. Her fiction reflected the tormented attachments and recurring loneliness that plagued her brief life. Schwarzenbach was born into privilege on May 23, 1908 in Bocken, near Zurich, Switzerland. Her father, Alfred, was a wealthy textile industrialist; her mother, Renée, a prominent hostess, was a granddaughter of Otto von Bismarck, first Chancellor of Germany. While Schwarzenbach was growing up, her mother conducted a long-term affair with opera singer Emmy Krüger, which may have catalyzed Annemarie's awareness of her own attractions to women. The family indulged Annemarie's inclinations to dress and act like a boy; school photos show her adopting the boyish demeanor that would make her the object of others' infatuations throughout her life. Schwarzenbach entered Zurich University in 1927 to pursue studies in history and literature. At this time, she also began writing fiction. Three years later she met Erika and Klaus Mann, the prodigy children of novelist Thomas Mann, and began a relationship with Erika. She traveled throughout Europe with the siblings and frequented Berlin's artistic circles and homosexual bars with them. She also began using morphine, which led to a lifelong addiction and periodic detoxifications in private clinics. In 1933 Schwarzenbach traveled to Spain with photographer Marianne Breslauer, one of many journeys that would provide material for her career.

Around 200 works will offer a fascinating collective presentation and juxtaposition of historic photographs from the 19th and early 20th centuries with contemporary photographic works. In new and often surprising contexts, well-known “classics” of photography will be presented alongside examples which are less-known but no less important. The 1930s photo of a bisected onion by German Bauhaus photographer Elsa Thiemann hangs next to the image of a sliced artichoke captured in 1930 by the American Edward Weston.
