ISSN: 1949-9833 Sensory Piety as Social Intervention in a Mechelen Besloten Hofje Andrea Pearson Besloten hofjes compel sensory devotion, and sight provides the privileged point of entry into the works. Paradoxically, a female devotee from Mechelen, identified here as visually impaired, is represented in a wing hinged to one example. By prioritizing physical disability over spiritual interiority in the study of the hofje, this essay recalibrates sensory piety as socially persuasive. The investigation in turn complicates previous models for the production and reception of Besloten hofjes in general. Previously untapped archival and visual evidence reveals that the hofje was likely commissioned by the impaired woman’s parents, probably for the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwegasthuis (Hospital of Our Lady) in Mechelen, where she was professed. There, the hofje asserted a meritorious status in piety that claimed salvation for members of the familial triad, all three of whom were rendered spiritually suspect by the woman’s disability.

Villages and towns nearly always had gathering places for the community—the village green, town square, market street, pub, church—that served the needs for economic, social, and religious exchange. Sometimes, householders lived in clustered dwelling groups where their day-to-day needs were lightened by virtue of shared work and leisure: sharing the tasks of milling corn, making chapatis, washing clothes, tending children, as well as just sitting and talking, or gathering around the fire for stories. The commune of households made life easier and more enjoyable. The historic pocket neighborhood precedents highlighted in this section date back to the 1400s, and came about through early initiatives for social security, by happenstance, by romantic reference to the old world, or by result of a grand vision.

  • Funding and Founding Private Charities: Leiden Almshouses and Their Founders, 1450–1800
Continuity and Change 27 (2), 2012, 199–239. f Cambridge University Press 2012 doi:10.1017/S026841601200015X Funding and founding private charities: Leiden almshouses and their founders, 1450–1800 HENK LOOIJESTEIJN* ABSTRACT. This article presents a case study of the founders of almshouses for the elderly in the Dutch city of Leiden during the late middle ages and the early modern age. First, an overview of Leiden’s almshouses is given and an assessment made of their importance for the elderly. Next, a prosopography of Leiden’s alms- house founders is presented, and reasons for founding almshouses discussed, focusing on religion, status, and the support of one’s nearest and dearest. This is followed by an analysis of the social class of almshouse inhabitants. This article contends that via almshouse foundations the wealthy and privileged upper classes of Dutch society looked after (distant) family members, employees and other dependants in their patronage orbit, and that almshouses thus in practice served mostly as a respectable way out of open and disgraceful poverty for members of the lower middle class and the class of wage-dependants. 1. INTRODUCTION Dutch charity has been literally monumentalised in a great number of buildings with a charitable purpose, such as hospitals, orphanages and old people’s homes as well as almshouses. Frequently, these ‘many and various hospitals’ were the wonder of foreign visitors such as Sir William Temple, who wrote that these buildings ‘are in every man’s curiosity and talk that travels their Countrey’.1 Many of these institutions were founded and funded with private money.
