  • The Contagion of Capital
The Jus Semper Global Alliance In Pursuit of the People and Planet Paradigm Sustainable Human Development March 2021 ESSAYS ON TRUE DEMOCRACY AND CAPITALISM The Contagion of Capital Financialised Capitalism, COVID-19, and the Great Divide John Bellamy Foster, R. Jamil Jonna and Brett Clark he U.S. economy and society at the start of T 2021 is more polarised than it has been at any point since the Civil War. The wealthy are awash in a flood of riches, marked by a booming stock market, while the underlying population exists in a state of relative, and in some cases even absolute, misery and decline. The result is two national economies as perceived, respectively, by the top and the bottom of society: one of prosperity, the other of precariousness. At the level of production, economic stagnation is diminishing the life expectations of the vast majority. At the same time, financialisation is accelerating the consolidation of wealth by a very few. Although the current crisis of production associated with the COVID-19 pandemic has sharpened these disparities, the overall problem is much longer and more deep-seated, a manifestation of the inner contradictions of monopoly-finance capital. Comprehending the basic parameters of today’s financialised capitalist system is the key to understanding the contemporary contagion of capital, a corrupting and corrosive cash nexus that is spreading to all corners of the U.S. economy, the globe, and every aspect of human existence. TJSGA/Essay/SD (E052) March 2021/Bellamy Foster, Jonna and Clark 1 Free Cash and the Financialisation of Capital “Capitalism,” as left economist Robert Heilbroner wrote in The Nature and Logic of Capitalism in 1985, is “a social formation in which the accumulation of capital becomes the organising basis for socioeconomic life.”1 Economic crises in capitalism, whether short term or long term, are primarily crises of accumulation, that is, of the savings-and- investment (or surplus-and-investment) dynamics.

  • A Business Lawyer's Bibliography: Books Every Dealmaker Should Read
585 A Business Lawyer’s Bibliography: Books Every Dealmaker Should Read Robert C. Illig Introduction There exists today in America’s libraries and bookstores a superb if underappreciated resource for those interested in teaching or learning about business law. Academic historians and contemporary financial journalists have amassed a huge and varied collection of books that tell the story of how, why and for whom our modern business world operates. For those not currently on the front line of legal practice, these books offer a quick and meaningful way in. They help the reader obtain something not included in the typical three-year tour of the law school classroom—a sense of the context of our practice. Although the typical law school curriculum places an appropriately heavy emphasis on theory and doctrine, the importance of a solid grounding in context should not be underestimated. The best business lawyers provide not only legal analysis and deal execution. We offer wisdom and counsel. When we cast ourselves in the role of technocrats, as Ronald Gilson would have us do, we allow our advice to be defined downward and ultimately commoditized.1 Yet the best of us strive to be much more than legal engineers, and our advice much more than a mere commodity. When we master context, we rise to the level of counselors—purveyors of judgment, caution and insight. The question, then, for young attorneys or those who lack experience in a particular field is how best to attain the prudence and judgment that are the promise of our profession. For some, insight is gained through youthful immersion in a family business or other enterprise or experience.

  • Economists As Worldly Philosophers
December, 2010 Economists as Worldly Philosophers By ROBERT J. SHILLER AND VIRGINIA M. SHILLER1 In his influential 1953 book The Worldly Philosophers: The Lives, Times And Ideas Of The Great Economic Thinkers, Robert Heilbroner gave an inspirational account of what economists do, an account that was assigned as supplemental reading to countless beginning economics students over decades. Heilbroner wrote that he chose the term “worldly philosophers” because of the breadth and moral depth of economists’ inquiry. The appellation stuck, and for many years it was common to refer to economists as worldly philosophers. The inspiration of that book has contributed to the desire for many to go on to become economists, and to productive lives as researchers. But, while the volume of research turned out by economists is most impressive, there are questions whether “worldly” and “philosophical” are represented as much as they should be in economic research. Has economics as a profession substantially lost sight of the idealism that existed in earlier decades? Has the strong impulse to pursue narrow specialization in order to propel research to the frontier led to some loss of moral perspective? The financial crisis that started in 2007 and that continues today is widely taken in the popular press as evidence of a lapse, moral or otherwise, in the wisdom and judgment of the economics profession. Why was it that the profession as a whole failed to anticipate and raise any warning about the biggest financial crisis in the better part of a century? Countless critics *Cowles Foundation for Research in Economics, Yale University, Box 208281 Yale Station, New Haven CT 06520 and NBER, Child Study Center, Yale University, 230 South Frontage Road New Haven, CT 06510 1 from outside the profession think the models that economists relied upon were too rarified or specialized to allow most economists to see the big picture and to sound the alarm about problems that were developing.

University of Western Ontario Department of History 2013-2014 Introduction to the History of Business History 1803E Instructor: Dr. Jeffery Vacante Lectures: Tues & Thurs. 12:30-1:30 Email: [email protected] in HSB35 Office hours: Tues. 1:30-3:30 and one tutorial hour in Lawson Hall 2218 The financial crisis of 2008 has spurred considerable popular interest in the often complex workings of the market. In the first few weeks of this course we will explore the details of this crisis. We will then use this crisis as a gateway to study the larger history of finance, credit, stock markets, corporations, and business. In short, this course is both a practical introduction to how the market functions today as well as a consideration of the history of capitalism. In this course students will, in addition to learning the broad outline of the history of business, sharpen their ability to read and think critically, develop their analytical skills, learn to organize and present their thoughts in the form of academic essays, and practice the art of expressing their ideas in tutorials in such a manner that demonstrates their respect for the opinions of others as well as their own critical engagement with the course readings and the world around them. • 1 Economics in the 21St Century: a Critical Perspective on the Work
Economics in the 21st Century: A Critical Perspective on the Work of the John Bates Clark Winners Robert Chernomas, University of Manitoba Ian Hudson, University of Manitoba Abstract Economics has the awkward distinction of being both the most influential and most reviled of the social sciences. The economic crisis that started in 2008 does not appear to have caused the discipline’s influence to wane, but it has expanded the number of its critics. Broadly speaking, the growing criticism from outside (and occasionally inside) economics centered on how the discipline lacked realism and used technique as an end in itself, instead of engaging with concrete economic realities and accepting a pluralism of approaches adapted to the complexity of economic problems. A fundamental component of the lack of realism is the lack of attention by the mainstream of the discipline to the economic influence of the most powerful people, institutions and corporations that dominate the decision making of the 21st century. This paper explores whether this criticism should be applied to the work of Daron Acemoglu, one of the new generation of economic superstars, who have won The John Bates Clark (JBC) medal, given to the American economist under forty “judged to have made the most significant contribution to economic thought and knowledge,” and is generally considered the second most prestigious in the profession (after the Nobel Prize, which it sometimes foreshadows). Acemoglu and 1 the other winners of the JBC are significant because they represent the future of economics as defined by the discipline itself. Introduction Economics has the awkward distinction of being both the most influential and most reviled of the social sciences.

This situation was true not only for the “rust belt” sections of the US economy, such as Pittsburgh’s steel industry or Detroit’s automobile industry, but coal and energy industries as well as industrial manufacturing in general were all in decline. This sense of economic malaise and political turmoil was not isolated to the United States. The United Kingdom was experiencing decades of economic decline, as well social disruption due to strikes and violence, and the world learned of economic, political and human rights crises throughout Latin America and Africa. India and China continued to languish in extreme poverty. The economies in East and Central Europe and the former Soviet Union were also stagnating and falling behind even the stalling economies of the mature western democracies of France and Germany. Economic malaise and political turmoil were a global phenomenon of the 1970s and early 1980s. Milton Friedman and Rose Friedman sought to explain the reasons for this sad economic reality with special reference to the public policy discussions in the US.

The first development, within folklore studies generally, is a growing interest in occupational folklife and the consequent demand for appropriate materials and courses to satisfy that interest. The second, at the Smithsonian Institution specifically, was the housing of the largest extant collection of sound tape recordings of occupational folklife. The need for some bridge between the two, a bridge that would describe this unique archive as well as suggest to folklorists new ways of looking at occu pational folklife, seemed obvious. The Archive of Occupational Folklife, housed at the Smithsonian Institution's Office of American and Folklife Studies, contains over six hundred hours of recordings of narrative performances by occu pational groups who participated in the Working Americans pro gram of the 1975 and 1976 Festivals of American Folklife.
