I argue that the structural and stylistic changes that define each drama’s distinct presentation of interfaith conversion may be understood as engaged in the still-evolving debates over the Church of England’s sacramental theology and ceremonial practices—the very ritual actions that could render the meaning of conversion legible for a community—in light of simultaneously-shifting English relations with the Ottoman Turks and the independent Islamic states of North Africa. In complicating traditional readings of both the trajectory of Anglican reform and patterns of English interaction with Islamic North Africa and the Levant, this dissertation challenges popular critical readings of these plays that maintain the absolute and irredeemable alterity of the “other.” Instead, these texts’ images of conversion reveal a far greater range of responses to interreligious encounter than a simple opposition of “us” and “them.” Ultimately, these texts serve less to vilify Muslims in moments of heightened international tension than to highlight the stakes inherent in changes to English theology and ecclesiology for responding to the conversion of English Christians. vii INTRODUCTION “To know what was generally believed in all ages, the way is to consult the liturgies.”1 — John Selden, Table Talk England at the turn of the seventeenth century was a nation obsessed with conversion: kinds of conversion, causes of conversion, processes of conversion, the effects of conversion, stories of conversion, the rhetoric of conversion. In light of the protracted, and often recursive, trajectory of the Protestant Reformation in England across the sixteenth and seventeenth centu- ries, though, it is perhaps unsurprising that early modern English writing demonstrates a recur- ring interest in the navigation of both ecclesiastical and spiritual change. On the one hand, con- version could possess a highly public dimension, especially when it referred to changes in reli- gious or confessional affiliation during this period. Within living memory, England had gone from a highly conservative Roman Catholicism to Catholicism under the supreme head of the king; to a tentative Protestantism when, at the direction of King Henry VIII, England officially turned from a Roman Catholic nation to a Protestant nation in 1534; to a more radical Protestant- ism under Edward VI beginning in 1547; to a renewed Roman Catholicism under Mary Tudor after Edward’s death in 1553; and then, with Elizabeth’s ascension in 1558, to Protestantism once again. In the space of some twenty-five years, then, England itself converted three times. But while conversion could center on the highly politicized, polemical divisions between Roman Catholics and Protestants, on the other hand, conversion could also refer to “the achievement— 1 John Selden, Table Talk (London: 1689) cited in Edward Muir, Ritual in Early Modern Europe (New York: Cam- bridge UP, 1997): 17. 1 2 or perhaps better, the reception—of salvation, [as] an experience that occurs without any specific or explicit change in denominational identity.”2 For the early modern English, such a spiritual conversion was defined by “its inward turn, its focus on consciousness, subjectivity, and interior- ity.”3 For some English Christians, though, religious conversion was more properly understood as comprising both an inward and outward alteration: inward renewal under the influence of grace required the outward setting aside of former outward standards of behavior (sometimes the adoption of different standards of religious belief and activity), but the outward could also com- pel a change in the inward. In either direction, an intimate interconnection was suggested be- tween the two.4 But while the early modern English were forced to navigate the shifting currents of the Protestant Reformation in terms of its impact upon internal English politics, ecclesiology, and spirituality, it was also necessary to contend with the effects of reform as they were further im- pacted by a changing international scene. One source of apprehension was the fear of Roman Catholic enemies abroad who would threaten to re-convert Protestant England by the sword. Most memorable, perhaps, was the Spanish Armada episode in 1588, but fears of a Roman Cath- olic re-conversion were no less felt, when, in

They were called explorers, or adventurers, or geographical missionaries, and they were feted as heroes, dead or alive. When the illusive Saharan city was eventually discovered, they found the gates hanging off their hinges, sand piling up in the alleyways, the buildings crumbling to dust, and the promised gold long gone. That was the cruel irony of their quest. And yet it bore legends. Thankfully, our travels through West Africa were not burdened by the responsibilities weighing those explorers of old. We were not searching for the route of a mighty river, or trying to locate a ‘lost’ City of Gold.

    THE REFORMATION IN LEICESTER AND LEICESTERSHIRE, c.1480–1590 Eleanor Hall Since its arrival in England, never did Christianity undergo such a transformation as that of the Reformation. By the end of the sixteenth century the official presence of Catholicism had almost entirely disappeared in favour of Protestantism, the permanent establishment of which is still the institutional state religion. This transformation, instigated and imposed on the population by a political elite, had a massive impact on the lives of those who endured it. In fact, the progression of these religious developments depended on the compliance of the English people, which in some regions was often absent. Indeed, consideration must be given to the impact of the Reformation on these localities and social groups, in which conservatism and nostalgia for the traditional faith remained strong. In spite of this, the gradual acceptance of Protestantism by the majority over time allowed its imposition and the permanent establishment of the Church of England. Leicestershire is a county in which significant changes took place. This paper examines these changes and their impact on, and gradual acceptance by, the various religious orders, secular clergy, and the laity in the town and county. Important time and geographical comparisons will be drawn in consideration of the overall impact of the Reformation, and the extent to which both clergy and laity conformed to the religious changes imposed on them, and managed to retain their religious devotion in the process.     The Family and Descendants of Sir Thomas More Grandparents: William More and Johanna Joye: William was a Citizen and Baker of London. He died in 1469. Johanna (d.1470) was the daughter of John Joye, a Citizen and Brewer of London and his wife Johanna, daughter of John Leycester, a Chancery Clerk. Due to the seizure of family documents by Henry VIII following Thomas More‟s execution his ancestry cannot be traced back further than this. He referred to himself as “a Londoner born, of no noble family, but of honest stock”. [Note: It has sometimes been claimed that Sir John More, Thomas More‟s father, said that his ancestors came from Ireland. However, what he actually said was that his ancestors “either came out of the Mores of Ireland, or they came out of us”. No records of any Irish links have been discovered.] Parents: Sir John More (c.1451-1530) and Agnes Graunger (d.1499): John and Agnes were married in the church of St Giles without Cripplegate, London, on 24th April 1474. Agnes was the daughter of Thomas Graunger, an Alderman of London and a Merchant of the Staple of Calais. Agnes was John More‟s first wife, and the mother of all his children. Agnes died in 1499 and was buried in the Church of St. Michael Bassishaw, London. After her death John More married again three times. His second wife was Joan Marshall (the widow of John Marshall) who died in 1505. His third wife was Joan Bowes (the widow of Thomas Bowes) who died in 1520.

    Season of 1705-1706 anbrugh’s company began the autumn back at Lincoln’s Inn Fields V while they awaited completion of the theatre they had opened with a conspicuous lack of success the previous April. When the Queen’s Theatre in the Haymarket reopened on 30 October with the première of Vanbrugh’s own The Confederacy (a solid success), competition on something like an equal basis was restored to the London theatre for the first time since the union of 1682. Bitter as the theatrical competition of the late 1690s had been, it was always unequal: Rich had enjoyed two good theatre buildings but had to make do with mostly young and second-rate actors; the cooperative at Lin- coln’s Inn Fields included practically every star actor in London, but suffered from a cramped and technically inadequate theatre. By the autumn of 1705 the senior actors had become decidedly long in the tooth, but finally had a theatre capable of staging the semi-operas in which Betterton had long spe- cialized. Against them Rich had a company that had grown up: among its members were such stars as Robert Wilks, Colley Cibber, and Anne Oldfield. The failed union negotiations of summer 1705 left both managements in an ill temper, and for the first time in some years both companies made a serious effort to mount important new shows. Competition was at its hottest in the realm of opera. Under the circum- stances, this was hardly surprising: Betterton had been hankering after the glory days of Henry Purcell’s semi-operas since he was forced out of Dorset Garden in 1695; Vanbrugh was strongly predisposed toward experimenting with the new, all-sung Italianate form of opera; and Christopher Rich, having evidently made fat profits off Arsinoe the previous season, was eager for an- other such coup.

The English Broadside Ballad Archive, maintained by the Early Modern Center in the English Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara, has changed markedly over the course of the eight or so years I’ve been using it, and the tireless work of its director Patricia Fumerton and the whole EBBA team has made it as comprehensive and intuitive a collection as any scholar could ask for.
