I’ve had an amazing committee behind me: John Watkins and Katherine Scheil braved countless emails and conversations, in varying levels of panic, and offered such kind, thoughtful, and eye-opening commentary on my work that I often wonder what I ever did to deserve their time and attention. And Giancarlo Casale’s expertise in Ottoman history has proven to be equal parts inspiring and intimidating. Also, a big thank you to Julia Schleck, under whom I worked during my Masters degree, whose work was the inspiration for my entry into Anglo-Muslim studies. The bulk of my dissertation work would have been impossible (this is not an exaggeration) without access to one of the most astounding digital archives I’ve ever seen. The English Broadside Ballad Archive, maintained by the Early Modern Center in the English Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara, has changed markedly over the course of the eight or so years I’ve been using it, and the tireless work of its director Patricia Fumerton and the whole EBBA team has made it as comprehensive and intuitive a collection as any scholar could ask for. I am indebted to their herculean efforts. A humble thanks is also in order to Angela McShane, whom I suspect may be more robot than human if the depth and quality of her ballad scholarship is any indication. i To my family. My sisters Shaye and Jessie, whose happiness and well-being is paramount to me, and who have inspired me to try constantly to be the best big sister I can be. They are the only two people on earth whom it is vitally important I can make laugh. Gare Bear Nabity offers steaks, whiskey, hugs, more steaks, and a smartassery that nearly rivals my own. His stoic, selfless, and unconditional support for my family deserves infinite accolades. My dads - of both the nature and nurture variety - Rick and Eppie, thanks to whom I have a big wonderful family from Kents to Sisneroses. My Aunt Sue and cousin Curt had as much as hand in raising me as any parent, and I believe it is largely Curt’s fault I am who I am today. And my mom Janet, the hardest working human that I know, who is as proud of me as I am of her. She is the source of my drive, my sense of justice, and a strength of will so strong some are inclined to call it just plain bull- headedness. My brief but welcome proximity to Stephen McCullogh was fortuitous; he is among my dearest friends. Bomi Yoon may have taken his place in my house, but I happily made room for both of them in my heart. They’ve adopted me as their tallest, blondest child and have offered me such boundless love that I often forget we aren’t actually blood related. But that’s no matter. My adopted family has been integral in making Minnesota feel like home and I’d have to translate “thank you” into a thousand different languages before I felt I’d expressed it to them enough. I’ve saved my adviser, Nabil Matar, for last, but a paragraph at the end of an acknowledgements section feels woefully inadequate. I applied to the PhD program at the University of Minnesota in the hopes of working under his tutelage, but it turns out his was the most important friendship I’d find in Minneapolis. Other graduate students iii should be so lucky as to have an adviser like mine. The countless hours I’ve spent in his company over the better part of the last decade have inspired my scholarship beyond measure and he has truly made me feel not like a student, but a respected colleague. His work is the catalyst for all that I do. We are fatefully tied by the cosmos, our timelines crossing at May 29 1986, and I will spend the rest of my days working hard enough so as to never disappoint him (on the assumption he’ll eventually come to terms with my tattoo habit). They were called explorers, or adventurers, or geographical missionaries, and they were feted as heroes, dead or alive. When the illusive Saharan city was eventually discovered, they found the gates hanging off their hinges, sand piling up in the alleyways, the buildings crumbling to dust, and the promised gold long gone. That was the cruel irony of their quest. And yet it bore legends. Thankfully, our travels through West Africa were not burdened by the responsibilities weighing those explorers of old. We were not searching for the route of a mighty river, or trying to locate a ‘lost’ City of Gold.

It has thus been important to include often neglected, yet most important nations like The Polish-Lithuanian Com- monwealth and Hungary (following the lead of the excellent volume edited by Bodo Guthmüller and Wilhelm Kühlmann: Europa und die Türken in der Renaissance, Tübingen 2000). It has also been important to consider literature beyond well-known classics, thus including works that attracted more atten- tion in their own times than they do today. Finally, it should be underscored how the literary (and intellectual) field beyond the vernaculars included pub- lications in Latin. The introduction is an attempt to situate the subject matter of the individual contributions within a broader historical, intellectual and literary field, thus including further documentation and additional literary examples. ‘Turks’ was the current denomination of contemporary Muslims, whether North African or Spanish ‘Moors’, or inhabitants of the Ottoman Empire or its spheres of various sorts of influence. It should be stressed, though, that although the Ottomans in terms of power and political establishment were Turkish, the inhabitants of the Empire were multi-ethnic and multi-religious.

On 12th September 1683 there was a great battle of Vienna where John III magnificently defeated Turks. Polish mercenaries (Hussars) and artillery had the key role there.

    introduction Romance is a twilight zone in studies of late sixteenth-century literary genres in England. Half-way between the nostalgia of medieval chivalry and the enterprising spirit of early modern exploration, piracy and com- merce as preludes to a future empire, it is both very old-fashioned and innovatively modern. Appearing in narrative as well as in dramatic forms, romance lays simultaneous claims to history and imagination, which were not necessarily in opposition in the period, and caters for a readership of servants and citizens while equally fi nding its way into Spenserian epic, Sidneyan pastoral or even late Shakespearian tragicomedy and Miltonian poetry. The three plays grouped in this volume are early modern attempts at conquering that twilight zone in a context of expanding contacts with Muslim lands around the Mediterranean. romance and conquest in early modern england ‘The structural core of all fi ction’ for Northrop Frye, who sees it as a means to translate mythical archetypes into human experience, 1 romance is also ‘a notoriously slippery category’, as Barbara Fuchs warns. 2 The basic defi nition with which Helen Cooper starts her authoritative study of the genre is a primarily narrative fi ction in the vernacular which appears from the twelfth century onward, characterised by exotic settings, distant in time and/or place, concerned with love and/or chivalry, and involving high-ranking individuals engaged in some ideal quest. It may include such recurrent patterns as encounters with the supernatural, obscured identities or miraculous conversions. 3 Patricia Parker’s earlier deconstructionist approach complicates this defi nition by insisting on the proliferating digressions which form the structure of romance and defer its closure and collective coherence.

    Chapter Thirty-two Religion in Eastern Europe and the Middle East from 1648 through the Reign of Catherine the Great What in Polish and Lithuanian history is called “the Deluge” began in 1648, with the revolt of Ukraine from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Ukraine has been important in the history of religion, and especially of Judaism. The Hasidic movement began in Ukraine in the eighteenth century. A century earlier, Ukraine had been the scene of an especially dark chapter in Jewish history. In what is conventionally called “the Khmelnytsky Uprising” (1648-1654) Orthodox Christians killed many thousands of Judaeans, and those who survived were forced temporarily to flee for safety to other lands. In order to see the Khmelnytsky Uprising and the rise of Hasidism in perspective, a summary glance at earlier Ukrainian history is necessary. Early history of Ukraine: Judaism and Orthodox Christianity in Kievan Rus We have seen in Chapter 24 that from the eighth century to the 960s the steppe country above the Black Sea, the Caucasus range and the Caspian had been ruled by the khan or khagan of the Khazars. Prior to the arrival of the Khazars the steppe had been controlled consecutively by coalitions of mounted warriors named Sarmatians, Goths, Huns and Avars. Under these transient overlords the valleys of the great rivers - Bug, Dniester, Dnieper, Don, Volga - were plowed and planted by a subject population known to the historian Jordanes (ca. 550) as Antes and Sclaveni. From the latter designation comes the name, “Slavs,” and it can be assumed that the steppe villagers spoke a variety of Slavic dialects.

Hobbes was outed as an athe- ist and discredited almost as soon as the work appeared. Subsequent criticism was seen to be the idle pursuit of a discredited text, an exer- cise upon which young militant churchmen could cut their teeth, as William Warburton observed in the eighteenth century.2 We need to be aware, however, that this was a story that was largely the cre- ation of Hobbes’s intellectual opponents, writers with an interest in sidelining Leviathan from the mainstream of the history of ideas.
