Finnish Drama in Chinese Translation
FINNISH KULLERVO AND CHINESE KUNGFU Chapman Chen Project funded by Finnish Literature Information Center Hong Kong [email protected] Abstract Introduction: There are many important Finnish plays but, due to language barrier, Finnish drama is seldom exported, particularly to Hong Kong and China.. Objective: To find out differences in mentality between the Finnish and Chinese peoples by comparing the partially localized Chinese translation of Aleksis Kivi’s tragedy, Kullervo, with genuine Chinese martial arts literature. Methodology: 1. Chapman Chen has translated the Finnish classic, Kullervo, directly from Finnish into Chinese and published it in 2005. 2. In Chen’s Chinese translation, cultural markers are domesticated. On the other hand, values, characterization, plot, and rhythm remain unchanged. 3. According to Gideon Tory, the translator has to strike a golden mean between the norms of the source language and the target language. 4. Lau Tingci lists and explicates the essential components of martial arts drama. 5. According to Ehrnrooth’s “Mentality”, equality is the most important value in Finnish culture. Findings: i. Finland emphasizes independence while China emphasizes bilateral relationships. ii. The Finnish people loves freedom, but Gai Sizung argues that the Chinese people is slavish. iii. Finns are mature while many Chinese are, according to Sun Lung-kee (“The Deep Structure of Chinese Culture”; “The Deep Structure of Chinese Sexuality”), fixated at the oral and anal stages. iv. Finnish society highly values equality while Chinese interpersonal relationships are extremely complicated and hierachical. If Kullervo were a genuine Chinese kungfu story, the plot would be much more convoluted. Conclusion: The differences between Finnish and Chinese mentalities are so significant that partially localized or adapted Chinese translations of Finnish drama may still be able to introduce Finnish culture to the Chinese audience. -

Matthias Alexander Castrén Matthias Alexander Matt hias Alexander Castrén (1813–1852) was by far the most signifi cant Finn- ish linguist of the 19th century. In addition to being a linguist he was also a multidisciplinary scholar, equally versatile in the fi elds of ethnography, folklore, mythology, archaeology, history, and human geography. He left behind a huge corpus of fi eld data, collected by himself during prolonged expeditions to Kare- lia, Lapland, Arctic Russia, and Siberia between 1838 and 1849. In the short peri- ods of time Castrén spent in an academic environment, he had litt le opportunity to synthesize his collections, a situation aggravated by his rapidly progressing and ultimately fatal illness. Th erefore, a major part of his scholarly heritage re- mained unpublished when he died. Castrén was appointed Docent of Finnish and Ancient Nordic Languages and Tribes at the Imperial Alexander University in Helsinki in 1841, and ten years later he became the fi rst Professor of the Finnish Language. M.A. Castrén considered ethnology as a historical science and an instru- ment for describing the early periods of Finnish history. On his expeditions, he carried out ethnographic observations and took notes of the dwellings, cos- tumes, way of life, and customs of indigenous Siberian peoples. According to the programme draft ed by the Imperial Saint Petersburg Academy of Sciences, Collectiones museorum Castrén collected ethnological artifacts for the Ethnographic Museum in Saint Petersburg, and some items for the Ethnographic Museum of the University of Helsinki. Th e present work concentrates on the collections which describe Castrén’s merits in ethnological studies and museology. -

Nordic Journal of African Studies 1(2): 82–93 (1992) The Role of the Kalevala in Finnish Culture and Politics URPO VENTO Finnish Literature Society, Finland The question has frequently been asked: would Finland exist as a nation state without Lönnrot's Kalevala? There is no need to answer this, but perhaps we may assume that sooner or later someone would have written the books which would have formed the necessary building material for the national identity of the Finns. During the mid 1980s, when the 150th anniversary of the Kalevala was being celebrated in Finland, several international seminars were held and thousands of pages of research and articles were published. At that time some studies appeared in which the birth of the nation state was examined from a pan-European perspective. SMALL NATION STATES "The nation state - an independent political unit whose people share a common language and believe they have a common cultural heritage - is essentially a nineteenth-century invention, based on eighteenth-century philosophy, and which became a reality for the most part in either the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. The circumstances in which this process took place were for the most part marked by the decline of great empires whose centralised sources of power and antiquated methods of administrations prevented an effective response to economic and social change, and better education, with all the aspirations for freedom of thought and political action that accompany such changes." Thus said Professor Michael Branch (University of London) at a conference on the literatures of the Uralic peoples held in Finland in the summer of 1991. -

Elias Lönnrot, Otto Manninen ja tekstin tuottamisen prosessit Niina Hämäläinen ja Hanna Karhu Miten suullista perinnettä muokattiin kirjalliseen muotoon osana suurta kansallisromanttista projektia, jonka ansiosta kalevalamittainen runous kanonisoitui Kalevalan ja Kantelettaren muodossa? Entä miten 1800 luvun lopun taiderunous hyödynsi rekilauluperinnettä aikana, jolloin monet merkittävät runoilijat Otto Mannisesta Eino Leinoon aloittelivat uraansa? Minkälaisia yhteisiä piirteitä näillä prosesseilla oli? Tässä artikkelissa käsitellään suullisen perinteen ja kirjallisen ilmai sun suhdetta 1800luvulla. Aineistona ovat tietyt Elias Lönnrotin (1802− 1884) toimittamat kansanrunot Mehiläisessä (1836, 1837) ja Kantelettaressa (1840) sekä Otto Mannisen (1872−1950) rekilaulujen uudelleenkirjoituk set Mannisen arkiston luonnoksissa ja vuonna 1897 julkaistussa runos sa ”Kosken ruusu”. Artikkelissa esitellään myös Suomalaisen Kirjalli suuden Seuran (SKS) arkiston rekilauluaineistoja. Lönnrotin suhteen artikkelissa tarkastellaan kalevalamittaisia runoja, joista osa suunnattiin koulutetulle sivistyneistöyleisölle, osa maaseudun rahvaalle, ja pohdi taan näiden pohjalta, miten tekstin tuottamisen tavat erosivat tai mah dollisesti olivat yhteneväisiä erilaisissa julkaisuissa. The three autobiographies studied here, by renowned Finnish editors-publishers Jalmari Jäntti (1965), Jarl Hellemann (1996), and Erkki Reenpää (2003) indicate that the translation process is much more complex than one could expect by simply concentrating on translators. Keywords: voice, editor, translation process, autobiography Cet article étudie la voix de l’éditeur dans la traduction en examinant un matériau jusqu’ici peu utilisé par les traductologues : les autobiographies de réviseurs. Les trois autobiographies analysées ici, écrites par les réviseurs-éditeurs finlandais renommés Jalmari Jäntti (1965), Jarl Hellemann (1996) et Erkki Reenpää (2003), montrent que le processus de la traduction est bien plus complexe que l’on pourrait penser en se penchant seulement sur le rôle des traducteurs. It nowadays publishes literature in the fields of ethnology and folkloristics, linguistics, literary research and cultural history. The first volume of the Studia Fennica series appeared in 1933. Since 1992, the series has been divided into three thematic subseries: Ethnologica, Folkloristica and Linguistica. Two additional subseries were formed in 2002, Historica and Litteraria. The subseries Anthropologica was formed in 2007. In addition to its publishing activities, the Finnish Literature Society maintains research activities and infrastructures, an archive containing folklore and literary collections, a research library and promotes Finnish literature abroad. Further, I analyse how the men’s peacetime identity was transformed into a wartime military one due to their battle experiences and encounters with the other (the enemy, the Balkans and its civilian population) and how public memory both shaped this process and was reinterpreted during it. Methodologically I combine Victor Turner’s study of rituals as processes with Maurice Halbwachs’s sociologial insights about what he termed mémoire collective and what I have called public memory, and Eric Dardel’s geographical view about the meaning of space in remembering. My sources are the written recollections of the Finnish guardsmen, both volunteers and professionals. I have broken each recollection (nine together) down into themes (military ideals, views of the enemy, battle, the civilians or Bulgarians, etc.) and analysed them separately, letting every author tell his story about each thema.
