GUTINDEX.AUS: The eBook listing for the eBooks posted at Project Gutenberg of Australia are in a separate file named GUTINDEX.AUS. Be sure to read the disclaimer and appendix included in that file. Please see the APPENDIX at the end of the eBook Listings for some general comments and clarification (this Appendix is a work-in- progress). -=] INTRODUCTION [=- This file, GUTINDEX.ALL, is a plain text listing of all the eBooks which have been posted to the Project Gutenberg collection. It is not a database. But it is useful for identifying eBooks so that they can be downloaded by means other than directly from the website, such as ftp or get/wget. It is also used to identify works already in the collection so that there is no duplication, and to determine what can be added to the collection. With the posting of eBook #10001 in November of 2003, a major change in eBook filenaming was instituted, which is explained below. The new-style system is gradually being applied to those ebooks with numbers 1 to 9999. (For additional information, and possibly further clarification, please see the Project Gutenberg FAQ at http://www.gutenberg.org/faq/gutfaq.htm, particularly the section "About Finding eBooks", Items R.1 thru R.6.) .:: HOW TO GET EBOOKS FROM PROJECT GUTENBERG ::. The easiest way to obtain our eBooks is via our search page at http://www.gutenberg.org/catalog/world/search which allows searching by title, author, eBook number, language and other bibliographic data. Or, you might prefer: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/ To download an eBook to your mobile device this page may prove helpful: http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Gutenberg:MobileReader_Devices_How-To Mirrors (copies) of the complete collection are available around the world, and you can select one nearer to your location from the link on the search results page. To see a listing of mirror sites, and locate the one nearest to you, visit: http://www.gutenberg.org/MIRRORS.ALL To use the informational listings in this file, the following information will be helpful: --FOR EBOOKS WITH NUMBERS GREATER THAN 10000 Beginning with #10001, the eBook number is now being used as the base filename. From very early in the history of Project Gutenberg, eBook numbers have been assigned to each of the works in the collection, and are a uniquely identifying feature of Project Gutenberg eBooks, so it was determined that this was the logical means of assigning filenames. For example, the plain text version of #10010 has the filename 10010.txt; the HTML version has the filename 10010-h.htm. Also, with new-style postings, each eBook is posted in a subdirectory based on the same number as the eBook number; all of the available formats of each eBook will be accessible in that subdirectory. Corrected EDITIONS of these eBooks replace the old file and are then given the original filename and etext number. The replaced older file is renamed and archived. New VERSIONS are based on different sources, and are treated as new eBooks, to which are assigned new filenames and etext numbers. File formats other than plain text will have a format-designator appended to the filename, as well as an appropriate file extension. The following list indicates the most common formats likely to be found at Project Gutenberg: Plain text 12345.txt 12345.zip 8-bit text 12345-8.txt 12345-8.zip (Includes: ISO-8859-1, CP-1252, MacRoman) Big-5 12345-5.txt 12345-5.zip Unicode 12345-0.txt 12345-0.zip HTML 12345-h.htm 12345-h.zip TeX 12345-t.tex 12345-t.zip XML 12345-x.xml 12345-x.zip MP3 12345-m-###.mp3 12345-m.zip RTF 12345-r.rtf 12345-r.zip PDF 12345-pdf.pdf 12345-pdf.zip LIT 12345-lit.lit 12345-lit.zip MS Word Doc 12345-doc.doc 12345-doc.zip PDB 12345-pdb.pdb 12345-pdb.zip To directly access the file directories: http://www.gutenberg.org/dirs/ - or - ftp://www.gutenberg.org/pub/docs/books/gutenberg/ . .then navigate down through the subdirectories until you get to the appropriate level, and then select the file you wish to download, using your normal download procedures. Example: eBook number 11 would be found in /1/11/11.txt 1100 in /1/1/0/1100/1100.txt etc. (Note that the subdirectory level number is one less than the full eBook number; i.e., 1100.txt is _not_ in /1/1/0/0/1100/.) --FOR EBOOKS NUMBERED 1 THROUGH 10000 EBooks numbered 1 to 10000 were originally posted in "release year" directories; i.e., if an eBook had a release date of Oct 2003, it was posted in the etext03 directory. Over time, that official "release year" advanced, so that by November 2003 the release year was 2006. Please note that it is still recommended to start at the main PG search facility: http://www.gutenberg.org/catalog/ Filenames for these files are to be found in the listing below. Consider Alice in Wonderland: Jan 1991 Alice in Wonderland, Lewis Carroll [Carroll #1] [alicexxx.xxx] 11 The line indicates the following: 1. The eBook was released in January, 1991 2. The eBook's name and author are "Alice in Wonderland" by "Lewis Carroll" 3. This is #1 in a series of books by the author 4. The base filename is "alice" 5.
