I have read all of the Ian Fleming books except the last one and I have Octopussy on my Kindle.Raymond makes several references to a few of the Bond movies and books by Fleming. A good nod to the origins/past adventures of Bond.A good villain and a few touch henchmen and women. Bond being Bond, meaning great action and of course good looking women both good and bad. A Conversation with Author Raymond Benson About The Black Stiletto TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF, HOW AND WHEN YOU STARTED WRITING. I “fell” into writing. I was a theatre major in college and spent a decade in New York City directing plays and composing music for musicals; but since there was no money in that, I became a writer. J This was the early 1980s. My first book was a non-fiction encyclopedic work about the history of James Bond, a bio of Ian Fleming, and analyses of all the 007 books and movies up to that point. THE JAMES BOND BEDSIDE COMPANION was published in 1984, was nominated for an Edgar, and established me as a “Bond expert.” Surprisingly, though, my career took a sharp left turn, for I got involved on the ground floor of computer games. Between 1985 and 1997 I was a computer game designer and writer, creating role-playing adventure style games, many of them award-winning. To use a movie analogy, I was the screenwriter and sometimes director. It was only when the Ian Fleming Estate came calling in late 1995 that I started writing books again. Since John Gardner was retiring from the gig as Bond author, they asked me if I’d like to give it a shot. While I wrote my first novel, ZERO MINUS TEN, I remained employed at Viacom New Media as a game designer. But after the book came out in 1997, I quit the day job and became a writer full time. Wieland Schwanebeck (Dresden) Licence to Replicate: Never Say Never Again (1983) as 007’s Lesson in Adaptation Studies Traditionally, the James Bond franchise existed outside the jurisdiction of adaptation studies, where the prestige of canonical literature frequently continues to overshadow the merits of film, especially popular blockbuster cinema. Though no-one working in adaptation studies would voice this attitude, the prevalent opinion still seems to be that cinema, as a ‘hot medium’ (Marshall McLuhan), “requires a less active response from the viewer” (Gjelsvik 256). Some go so far as to speak of a general “bias in favour of literature as both a privileged […] and an aesthetically sanctified field”, which may account for adaptation studies’s reputation as “fundamentally conservative” (Leitch 2008: 64f.) More recently, they have widened their focus and have gradually become more inclusive, investigating ‘lowbrow’ fiction and transmedial processes.1 Admittedly, this new inclusiveness entails certain dangers for the objects of their studies. Geetha, Lecturer in English, Periyar University, Salem-11, [email protected] Spy fiction or Spy story is a genre in literature concerning the forms of espionage, a sub-genre derived from the novel during the nineteenth century, which then evolved into a discrete genre before the First World War (1914–18), when governments established modern intelligence agencies in the early twentieth century. As a genre, spy fiction is thematically related to the novel of adventure ( The Prisoner of Zenda , 1894, The Scarlet Pimpernel , 1905), the thriller (such as the works of Edgar Wallace) and the politico–military thriller ( The Schirmer Inheritance , 1953, The Quiet American , 1955). In an outstanding study of the origins of British spy fiction, David Stafford attributes the rise of these novels to an underlying feeling of national insecurity in the face of changing international relations: ‘The world presented by these novels is a dangerous and treacherous one in which Britain is the target of the envy, hostility, of the other European powers, singly or collectively according to context’. In order to keep the distinction clear between them and us, spying was what other countries did, whereas the unsung national heroes of this new fiction were typically young, male, athletic, and gentlemen, usually only making amateur excursions into the field of espionage. Undoubtedly one of the main appeals of early spy fiction was that it promoted the reader access to processes taking place behind official history, to what Conan Doyle describes in one of his stories as “that secret history of a nation which is so much more intimate and interesting than its public chronicle”.

The task of making James Bond fun again after the John Gardner era must've been formidable indeed, but Benson succeeded admirably bringing Bond back with Walther PPK in hand and a cigarette in his rather cruel mouth. A similar comparison might be how many writers tried to revive Robert E. Howard's Conan and failed? At least a dozen took a hard fall face first into their typewriters to crash and burn; recreating Conan in Howard's image couldn't be done (not even by Robert Jordan).
