When Ian Fleming wrote the first of the James Bond novels, Casino Royalehe had no idea the direction in which the stories would go, let alone how many he would eventually write. So when he introduced, Bond as using a Beretta in a flat chamois leather holster he probably didn't think too much about it. He had James Bond: Choice of Weapons: Three 007 Novels such a gun during the Second World War when he was in Naval Intelligence and felt it was an appropriate sidearm for a secret agent on an undercover mission. Boothroyd was a retired Army Major and gun collector. Boothroyd told Fleming that he really admired the Bond novels apart from the hero's choice of weapon. He felt that the Beretta was "a lady's gun" with no real stopping power. He also objected to the choice of holster. It had no external hammer, so it would not catch on Bond's clothes. Boothroyd also had bad words about the silencer Bond occasionally used, saying that they were rarely silent and reduced the power of a gun. Fleming replied, thanked the Major for his letter, and made a few points. He felt that Bond ought to have an automatic pistol; perhaps Boothroyd could recommend one? He agreed that the Beretta lacked power, but pointed out that Bond had used more powerful weapons when the need required, such as the Colt Army Special he uses in Moonraker. Fleming also said that he had seen a silenced Sten gun during the war and the weapon had hardly made a whisper. Boothroyd recommended the Walther PPK 7. He suggested, however, that ought to have a revolver for long-range work. Fleming asked Boothroyd if he could lend his illustrator Richard Chopping one of his guns to be painted for the cover of From Russia with Love. Boothroyd lent Chopping a. Fleming had Bond's Beretta caught in his holster at the end of From Russia with Lovean event that almost costs the secret agent his life. In the next novel, Dr. Noa certain Major Boothroyd recommends that Bond switch guns. Bond is issued a Walther PPK but is told to carry it in a Berns-Martin triple draw holster, which is designed only to carry revolvers. This is an odd mistake given that Fleming had bought such a holster and had it sent to Jamaica. It has been argued that Q-branch could have modified an excellent holster to accommodate automatics. The Walther PPK of the police officer protecting her jammed and was subsequently withdrawn from service. Gardner devoted two pages in his first James Bond novel Licence Renewed to the debate over whether to use a revolver or an automatic, and what make and model, before finally James Bond: Choice of Weapons: Three 007 Novels on an older FN M in 9mm Browning Long 9x20mmSR. James Bond: Choice of Weapons: Three 007 Novels Bond himself admits that it is an old gun. The original hardback cover illustration by Richard Chopping shows the FN pistol. After criticism from fans for choosing an old gun, Gardner replaced the gun three more times, eventually sticking to the ASP 9mm for the James Bond: Choice of Weapons: Three 007 Novels of the series. As he intended to downplay the gadgets in James Bond: Choice of Weapons: Three 007 Novels books, Gardner compensated by bringing to the series a colorful arsenal of weapons from around the world. The scene from the novel Dr. No is replayed more-or-less verbatim in the film, insuring the Walther PPK a place in cultural history. Bond shows a great deal more fidelity to his sidearm in the films than in the novels, even going so far as to take on an international arms dealer and hi-tech arms enthusiastic like Brad Whitaker armed only with an eight-shot, 7. As there is more gunplay in the recent film, Bond has changed to a more modern handgun, though it is still a Walther. There is also a greater use of assault rifles and submachineguns during the battle sequences. This wiki. This wiki All wikis. Sign In Don't have an account? Start a Wiki. Do you like this video? Review Benson captures the spirit and pluck of Fleming's in his high-flying spy thrillers. It is clear that Benson is the best of the successors to Bond creator Fleming. Raymond Benson imbues his Bond with enough James Bond: Choice of Weapons: Three 007 Novels, sexual prowess, and action-hero skills to please the purist and enthrall the novice. Plus Two Pointless Sort Stories. There is a companion volume containing the author's other original Bonds plus one short story. On the whole I liked Benson's additions to the Bond saga, though his tendency to go along with the original 'women as sex objects' strand seems astonishingly unpleasant. Nowhere is it more distasteful than in the second short story, in which attends a party given by the founder of 'Playboy' magazine.

A Good Nod to past Bond AdventuresBy CoachDAnother enjoyable James Bond thriller by Raymond Benson. My first Bond book by Benson was High Time to Kill, and I thought that was pretty darn good as well. • A Conversation with Author Raymond Benson About the Black Stiletto
A Conversation with Author Raymond Benson About The Black Stiletto TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF, HOW AND WHEN YOU STARTED WRITING. I “fell” into writing. I was a theatre major in college and spent a decade in New York City directing plays and composing music for musicals; but since there was no money in that, I became a writer. J This was the early 1980s. My first book was a non-fiction encyclopedic work about the history of James Bond, a bio of Ian Fleming, and analyses of all the 007 books and movies up to that point. THE JAMES BOND BEDSIDE COMPANION was published in 1984, was nominated for an Edgar, and established me as a “Bond expert.” Surprisingly, though, my career took a sharp left turn, for I got involved on the ground floor of computer games. Between 1985 and 1997 I was a computer game designer and writer, creating role-playing adventure style games, many of them award-winning. To use a movie analogy, I was the screenwriter and sometimes director. It was only when the Ian Fleming Estate came calling in late 1995 that I started writing books again. Since John Gardner was retiring from the gig as Bond author, they asked me if I’d like to give it a shot. While I wrote my first novel, ZERO MINUS TEN, I remained employed at Viacom New Media as a game designer. But after the book came out in 1997, I quit the day job and became a writer full time. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO WRITE YOUR NOVEL? Oops, I guess I answered that in the question above.

Accepted manuscript version of: Schwanebeck, Wieland. “License to Replicate: Never Say Never Again (1983) as 007’s Lesson in Adaptation Studies.” James Bond Uncovered, edited by Jeremy Strong, Palgrave Macmillan, 2018, pp. 163–84. Wieland Schwanebeck (Dresden) Licence to Replicate: Never Say Never Again (1983) as 007’s Lesson in Adaptation Studies Traditionally, the James Bond franchise existed outside the jurisdiction of adaptation studies, where the prestige of canonical literature frequently continues to overshadow the merits of film, especially popular blockbuster cinema. Though no-one working in adaptation studies would voice this attitude, the prevalent opinion still seems to be that cinema, as a ‘hot medium’ (Marshall McLuhan), “requires a less active response from the viewer” (Gjelsvik 256). Some go so far as to speak of a general “bias in favour of literature as both a privileged […] and an aesthetically sanctified field”, which may account for adaptation studies’s reputation as “fundamentally conservative” (Leitch 2008: 64f.) More recently, they have widened their focus and have gradually become more inclusive, investigating ‘lowbrow’ fiction and transmedial processes.1 Admittedly, this new inclusiveness entails certain dangers for the objects of their studies. Leaving popular franchises like James Bond out of adaptation studies certainly smacked of elitism and disdain, but it allowed them to retain a notable advantage which films that we more commonly perceive as literary adaptations don’t enjoy: they were treated as films in
