UvA-DARE is a service provided by the library of the University of Amsterdam (https://dare.uva.nl) Download date:27 Sep 2021 Shared Stories and Creative Dissonances Dissonances Shared Stories and Creative Shared Stories and Creative Dissonances Transnational Literary Projects and European Identity In publications addressing literary refl ections on Europe, little attention has been paid to emerging cultural net- works, the role of EU subsidies, or literary organisations engaging writers in initiatives aimed at contemplating the challenges that the European Union faces. This dissertation aims to explain the role of these new initiatives by presenting four recent, transnational literary projects as case studies: the “Literatur Express Europa 2000”; “The European Constitution in Verse”; “Narrati- ves for Europe”; and “The Return of Europe”. The projects were analysed through an examination of three fundamental aspects: the expectations held by the cultural organisations regarding their initiatives; the cul- 230 mm (fi nal size) 230 mm (fi 240 mm (fi nal size) 240 mm (fi tural artefacts resulting from the projects; and the effects of the projects in the public sphere. By selecting literary projects about Europe as case studies, rather than indi- vidual authors or texts, this research allows for an inter- disciplinary approach that reveals the interaction between EU politics, civil society, cultural networks, and individual authors. Darrall Slater of Bayshots was on Courtesy of hand as apparently the sloop had "obvious issues with the jib.“ Members of the U.S. Coast Guard on scene as the sloop remains tied to Pilot. At some point, the engine stalled sending the sloop on a direct course towards the B-39 submarine. Glancing off of the sub, the sloop pinwheeled around into Surprise’s stern. Into her USCG Barque Eagle to second rotation, quick thinking crew were able to prevent her from striking Pilot. visit San Diego in May Announced last year, May marks the first of two visits by the United States Coast Guard Eagle (WIX-327). Shareholders, Managers, Governments, and the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits (1876-1939)1 Abstract The paper deals with some aspects of the development of the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits (CIWL) between the early 1890s and the 1930s. The paper critically highlights the traditional approaches to define the nationality of the firm (the place of incorporation of a company, the nationality of the shareholders or that one of the members of the board of directors). It proposes a new one, looking at the instrument used by the states – national interest – to influence the balance of power and the strategies of the company. This approach, largely used by social scientists of political science and international relations, can offer new tools also to business historians when approaching the issue of the nationality of the firm. While the former provide pattern, the latter give texture. Objects that directly link people to historical events allow us to touch the past. Some are very personal connections between indi- viduals and their ancestors. Others are the touch- stones of our collective memory. Buried in the sand of Lake Superior is the USS ESSEX, an artifact of the nation’s maritime past. A mid- nineteenth-century sloop of war designed by one of America’s foremost naval architects, Donald McKay, the ESSEX traveled around the world and ultimately came to rest on Duluth’s Minnesota Point, about as far from the ocean as a vessel can get. The timbers of the SCOTT F. ANFINSON Scott Anfinson is the archaeologist for the Minnesota Historical Society’s State Historic Preservation Office. He received a Master’s degree in anthropology from the University of Nebraska in 1977 and a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Minnesota in 1987. Besides directing the Minnesota Shipwreck Initiative, his research interests focus on the American Indian archaeology of southwestern Minnesota and the history of the Minneapolis riverfront.
