SANTA BARBARA Greg Thomas Medical Oncologists must understand the outward symptoms of a patient and the cellular and molecular level of each individual’s cancer. This comprehensive approach provides the most effective chemotherapy regimens to patients and results in personal and individualized care for each patient who walks in the door. In 2014, the Medical Oncology department instituted a number of advancements. To enhance the creation, verification and documentation of treatment plans, a new software system called the Beacon Oncology Information System, was integrated into Sansum Clinic’s electronic health record system. Medical Oncology expanded its existing services in Solvang, and created a new Patient Resource Guide that describes treatments, side effects, management techniques and resources available through our Wellness Programs. The nine physicians that comprise the Cancer Center’s Medical Oncology & Hematology team collaborate with many of the primary and specialty care physicians of our patients. SANTA BARBARA Yvonne Coffey Nuclear Medicine plays a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer by capturing images that deliver critical information about tumors, cells and major organs. In January 2014, the Nuclear Medicine department began to see the benefits of superior imaging supplied by a new Philips BrightView SPECT/CT diagnostic camera obtained through the generosity of donors and the Cancer Foundation. Also in 2014, Nuclear Medicine began using a new drug that more accurately identifies the sentinel lymph node in breast cancer and melanoma patients and illuminates which lymph nodes are cancerous. A new radioactive treatment was also initiated in 2014 called Xofigo,® an injected treatment for patients whose prostate cancer is inoperable. The Cancer Center is the only facility providing this treatment between San Francisco and Los Angeles and we are among the top three facilities in the nation providing this care, based on volume. Sixty-three treatments were performed in 2014 at the Cancer Center. Nuclear Medicine

[ 12] CANCER FOUNDATION OF SANTA BARBARA The Cancer Center’s Clinical Research Program advances the fight against cancer through involvement with clinical trials and basic science research. In partnership with industry leaders such as Amgen, UCLA and Genentech, the Clinical Research Program keeps us on par with many major academic medical facilities around the country. In 2014, our Research Program saw an increase in study openings and enrolled patients as a result of our association with US Oncology Network. Fifty-nine patients were newly enrolled in Clinical Trials in 2014, an increase of 51% over 2013, and eight new oncology treatment trials opened between the months of May and December. Our clinic was sought by many patients outside the Sansum Clinic network for the clinical trials we offer, in particular the Lung Cancer trial of a PD-L1 inhibitor. Through collaborative efforts with all community oncologists, we currently offer more than twenty-five clinical trials for numerous types of cancer allowing patients access to local, cutting-edge treatments. [ 20] CANCER FOUNDATION OF SANTA BARBARA The Hereditary Cancer Risk Counseling Program helps patients and families with a history of cancer better understand and manage their risk for developing the disease through genetic testing and analysis. Referred patients in our community have a unique opportunity to meet with a full-time cancer genetic specialist to discuss their concerns and determine their hereditary cancer risk. Results of genetic testing often directly affect the course of treatment and our genetic counselor’s involvement with our community’s oncologists and patient navigators fosters the timely inclusion of genetic information into a patient’s care plan.

Seymour and Shirley Lehrer Twisted steel, rebar, pie tins and rusted hand tools are but a few of the materials welded, bent and shaped into abstract sculptures that live amongst the native plants surrounding Shirley and Seymour Lehrer’s adobe-style home. At the request of their daughters, the couple left behind their native Los Angeles and the business they built there for Santa Barbara in 1991. “Outside of a few short vacations, we didn’t know anything about Santa Barbara,” explains Seymour Lehrer. “We didn’t know anyone, didn’t know any of the institutions… it was a blind move. Turned out to be the best thing we ever did. And funny thing… our daughters ended up following us here.” “I was treated for cancer 30 years ago, and I’m still here to tell the tale,” confides Shirley Lehrer. “Cancer research is a very important thing to me. It would be very helpful to find a cure for it someday, and I believe through research we will. It’s one of the reasons we support it.” Originally a tool and die maker, Seymour went on to found a metal goods manufacturing company with his wife. Today his workshop, chock full of scrap metal, arc welders and works-of-art in process, is testa- ment that metalwork remains deep in Mr. Lehrer’s blood. Over decades of hard work, their metal business blossomed and the Lehrer’s diversified by investing in industrial buildings — something they knew intimately as business owners who used them. “Santa Barbara is our home now. We’ve been here 24 years, and our children are here,” continues Seymour Lehrer. “Through our family’s foundation, we enjoy supporting the arts and many local institutions. If you live in Santa Barbara, not to support our local institutions is crazy. For years we supported a number of medical institutions in the Los Angeles area. Big ones. We decided to take those annual gifts and make a bigger difference here at the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara. And when we updated our estate plans in 2014, we included the Cancer Foundation.” “ What we have here is precious. People come from all over — from Visalia, the Santa Ynez Valley and beyond. Supporting our local institutions, upon which we depend, just makes good sense.”

[ 44] CANCER CENTER OF SANTA BARBARA WITH SANSUM CLINIC “ As a registered nurse and an eight year cancer survivor myself, I know firsthand the importance of our heart centered Healing Touch community here at the Cancer Center.” Volunteer Spotlight — PATRICIA BRENNAN, HEALING TOUCH VOLUNTEER HEALING TOUCH VOLUNTEERS: Nina Zimmer, Jean Mangus and Patricia Brennan Each year, dozens of Cancer Center volunteers give valuable support to our staff and providers behind the scenes while providing warmth, understanding and kindness to our patients. Cancer Center volunteers have provided Healing Touch to both patients and caregivers for almost eight years. Healing Touch is an evidenced-based, noninvasive treatment that helps restore and balance the innate energy within the human body that has been depleted due to stress, illness, grief or medical treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation, and is offered through our Oncology Wellness programs. Jean Mangus, Nina Zimmer and Patricia Brennan, RN have all been trained in the art of Healing Touch and during their years of volunteering have provided more than 1,200 treatments to 400 patients and caregivers. In addition to their skillful abilities, their warmth and compassion have enhanced the well- being of hundreds touched by cancer. “I find it a privilege to accompany these clients for a small part of their healing journey,” explains Healing Touch volunteer Nina Zimmer. “Their courage and strength inspire me in my own life. I hear so much gratitude from them about all the resources pro- vided here and all the wonderful people who staff the Cancer Center.” In 2014, more than 20 regular volunteers like Jean, Nina and Patricia contributed more than 2,000 hours of service for the benefit of our patients by serving coffee, distributing parking permits, walking patients to appointments, and providing clerical and event support. We are grateful to each of them for sharing their time and talents with us.
