Popular Selection List 2017 Edition an ADDENDUM to the PIANO SYLLABUS 2015 EDITION Preface Popular Selection List 2017 Edition AN ADDENDUM TO THE PIANO SYLLABUS 2015 EDITION Preface The Popular Selection List, 2017 Edition, is an addendum to The Royal Conservatory Piano Syllabus, 2015 Edition, which embodies the official requirements for the piano examinations conducted by The Royal Conservatory Certificate Program. The Popular Selection List is a compilation of non-classical pieces, carefully selected to suit each level. Students in Levels 1 to 9 have the option of substituting a piece chosen from the Popular Selection List for one etude in their level. Students should consult the Piano Syllabus, 2015 Edition, for detailed information on substitution policies. Students do not need prior approval from the Certificate Program to use a piece from the Popular Selection List as a substitute for one of the etudes from the same level. Each piece has musical value, containing rhythmic or technical challenges pertinent to the level for which it has been selected. The required edition for each selection is clearly identified. These editions have been chosen to ensure that students prepare the appropriate arrangement at each level. Please consult the Bibliography on p. 27 for more information on the collections and sheet music referenced in the Popular Selection List. Da Capo, Dal Segno Signs, and Repeats • When performing repertoire in an examination, students should observe Da Capo and Dal Segno signs, unless stated otherwise in the Popular Selection List, 2017 Edition. • Repeat signs should generally be omitted. However, repeat signs should be observed only if indicated in the Popular Selection List, 2017 Edition. • A Bronx Tale
A Bronx Tale Synopsis A Bronx Tale, a new musical set in the early 1960s, is based on the autobiographical play written by Chazz Palminteri. It tells the coming-of-age story of Calogero Anello, a young boy from a working class family who finds himself caught between his loving father and a charismatic mob boss. In Act One, Calogero witnesses Sonny, the mob boss, murdering someone right in front of his house on Belmont Avenue; Calogero covers for Sonny when questioned by the NYPD. Calogero’s father, Lorenzo, who is an MTA bus driver, wants to instill a strong sense of right and wrong in his son, but Calogero goes against his father’s wishes. After Sonny is released by the police with no charges against him, he takes Calogero under his wing and helps him get involved with the “glamorous” world of organized crime. Sometime later, Calogero is all grown up and a full prodigy of Sonny, but his father has no idea he has continued to see Sonny. Calogero has also developed a group of Italian- American friends that Sonny thinks is a bad influence over him and encourages Calogero to stick to his schoolwork. Calogero meets an African-American girl, Jane, on Webster Avenue which is a very different side of the Bronx than where Calogero lives. He asks his father for advice on what he should do when he and Jane go on a date. Calogero’s father doesn’t exactly approve of him going out with Jane because he is concerned for his son’s safety, considering the high racial tensions on the time period, but Lorenzo still gives him advice.

Biography Mark Ronson is an internationally renowned DJ and five-time-Grammy-Award-winning and Golden Globe-winning artist and producer. Ronson spent the first eight years of his life growing up in London, England. Having played guitar and drums from an early age, it wasn't until moving to New York City following his parents’ divorce, that he discovered DJ culture. At age 16, and already a fan of artists like A Tribe Called Quest, Run DMC and the Beastie Boys, Ronson began listening to mixtapes released by various hip hop DJs. Inspired, Ronson confiscated his step-father's vinyl collection and tried his hand at mixing. It was the first step in a career highlighted by work on a multi Grammy-winning album by Amy Winehouse, as well as his own Grammy-winning, global smash hit with Bruno Mars, "Uptown Funk." In the late 1990s into the early 2000s, the New York club scene was percolating with booming hip-hop and glitzy R&B. Ronson quickly earned himself a reputation through stints on the decks in downtown clubs before becoming the DJ of choice for many noteworthy parties. Hip-hop mogul Sean "P. Diddy" Combs hired Ronson to DJ his fabled 29th birthday bash. These and other high-profile gigs boosted Ronson's profile and connected him with other artists, many of whom were interested in collaborating. His first production gig came from British soul singer Nikka Costa and he found that his experience of working a club crowd informed his production skills. Fusing his eclectic turntable skills with his knowledge of musical instruments and songwriting, Ronson soon embarked on his first solo record.
