  • 2018 Estate Vineyard, Sauvignon Blanc Ribbon Ridge AVA
2018 Estate Vineyard, Sauvignon Blanc Ribbon Ridge AVA Location: Ribbon Ridge is a sub-appellation of the Willamette Valley AVA that sits 22 miles southwest of Portland, 4 miles northwest of Dundee and 40 miles east of the Pacific Ocean. Ribbon Ridge is contained within the larger Chehalem Mountains AVA - which is contained with the Willamette Valley AVA. The appellation became official in 2005. Climate: Protected by geographical features to the north, south and west, Ribbon Ridge's grape- growing hillsides are slightly warmer and drier when compared to the adjacent valley floors. Ribbon Ridge's moderate climate is well suited for early grape growth in the spring, consistent and even ripening over the summer and a long, full maturing season in the fall. Soils: The Ribbon Ridge region contains primarily sedimentary soils that are younger, finer and more uniform than the alluvial sedimentary and volcanic soils of neighboring regions. These moderately deep, well-drained silty-clay loam soils are part of the Willakenzie soil series and are of low fertility and ideal for growing high-quality wine grapes. Topography: Geographically, Ribbon Ridge is a 3.5-mile long by 1.75-mile wide ridge that extends from the Chehalem Mountains. The ridge rises 683 feet from the Chehalem Valley floor, giving it an island-like appearance. Site Characteristics: This is the only vineyard in Ribbon Ridge with plantings of Sauvignon Blanc. Granted, there are only around 30 vineyards in the AVA and there is little Sauvignon Blanc planted in the entire Willamette Valley, however the sandy marine soils and slightly cooler nature of this appellation are perfect growing conditions for Sauvignon Blanc.

2017 willamette valley chardonnay trisaetum story In 2003, Andrea and James Frey founded Trisaetum in one of the few places where climate, soil, and entrepreneurial spirit combine to produce some of the world's best wines. Today, the family owned and operated winery in the heart of Oregon's Ribbon Ridge AVA produces small lots of acclaimed Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling from its three estate vineyards. winemaker’s notes This Chardonnay is a blend of our Ribbon Ridge Estate and Coast Range Estate vineyards. The 2017 shows gorgeous aromatics of orange blossom, kumquat and fresh French baguette, with spicy notes of ginger and nutty toasted oak. Bright flavors of orchard fruits and citrus zest lead to toasted hazelnuts, sourdough bread, and vanilla cream. Firm acidity carries the fruit and mineral through on the lingering finish. vintage & winemaking 2017 proved to be another great vintage for Oregon. A later start to budbreak and bloom than in the previous year recalled more classic Oregon starts, while a long, dry growing season and warmer August allowed optimal fruit ripening. We harvested from our three estate vineyards over four different dates between September 13th on the Ribbon Ridge Estate; and concluded on October 16th when the last of our fruit from the Coast Range Estate made its way to the winery. All ferments started with natural yeasts and spent 11 appellation: months in barrel on fine lees. Willamette Valley AVA soil: estate vineyards Willakenzie, Bellpine, Sitton, Wellsdale, Dupee Coast Range Estate: 3 acres of Chardonnay are planted in a unique mix of volcanic and from marine sedimentary rock.

  • How Well Do American Viticultural Areas Correspond with the Soil Classes in Oregon's Northern Willamette Valley? a Question for the Wine Industry
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Douglas T. Wood for the degree of Master of Science in Geography presented on March 17, 2014. Title: How Well Do American Viticultural Areas Correspond with the Soil Classes in Oregon's Northern Willamette Valley? A Question for the Wine Industry Abstract approved: _____________________________________________ Laurence C. Becker The specific geography of individual wine growing regions has long been understood to be a significant factor in predicting both a region’s success in producing high quality grapes, and the resulting demand for wines produced from that region’s fruit. In the American wine industry, American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) are increasingly being used to designate a uniqueness and specificity of place. This process is often predicated on the argument that these areas represent a certain degree of physiographic uniformity or homogeneity. This is particularly the case with regard to the phenomenon of sub-AVAs, wherein smaller areas within large, spatially heterogeneous AVAs seek to differentiate themselves based on the physiographic features that are purportedly unique to those smaller subregions. In many cases, there is a strong correlation between soil classes and AVA boundaries, whereas in other cases the correlation is not as strong. This suggests that there are factors other than physiographic homogeneity contributing to the designation of these sub-AVAs. This study employs GIS and spatial analysis to examine and potentially correlate the soil classes of Oregon’s northern Willamette Valley with the sub-AVAs in that area. In doing so, this study presents maps and statistical results in order to provide a quantitative summary of the geographic context of vineyards in this region with respect to both the soil classes present and the federally designated AVA boundaries in which they are located.

AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF WINE ECONOMISTS AAWE WORKING PAPER No. 151 Economics Classification and Re-Classification: Oregon’s Willamette Valley AVA and its New Sub-AVAs Omer Gokcekus and Clare M. Finnegan Feb 2014 www.wine-economics.org ISSN 2166-9112 Classification and re-classification: Oregon’s Willamette Valley AVA and its new sub-AVAs * Omer Gokcekus a and Clare M. Finnegan a Abstract: The creation of new, sub-AVAs within Oregon’s Willamette Valley AVA may indicate a desire on the part of well-established wineries to “split” or separate their social grouping from those with lesser qualifications. Once their social cluster has been differentiated, we theorize that these wineries would be able to capitalize on their newly developed distinctiveness and collect a larger regional reputation premium. Based on 2,221 Wine Spectator rated pinot noir wines between 1984 and 2008, regression analyses demonstrate that indeed regional reputation premiums have significantly increased with the creation of sub-AVAs; and that the price-quality ratio gap between sub-AVAs and the rest of Willamette has widened. (JEL Classification: C20, Q12, Q13, L66) Key Words: Wine, classification, terroir, AVA, regional reputation premium. * We would like to thank Karl Storchmann for providing the Wine Spectator data; and Huseyin Cakal, Neal Hulkower, Edward Tower and the participants of the Session 3: Regulating the Industry of the 7th Annual AAWE Conference in Stellenbosch, South Africa for their helpful comments and suggestions. a School of Diplomacy and International Relations, Seton Hall University, South Orange, 07079, USA. • WILLAMETTE VALLEY WINE American Viticultural Areas & Soils
Media Contact: Emily Petterson [email protected] 503-550-8161 WILLAMETTE VALLEY WINE American Viticultural Areas & Soils No grape variety is as reflective of climatic and site differences as Pinot noir. That is why it demands a cool climate to thrive and why small distance differences in the valley often yield wines of distinc- tively different character. General attributes that make the Willamette Valley suitable for cool climate grape growing include the protection afforded by the Cascade Mountains to the east, Coast Range mountains to the west and a series of lower hill chains to the extreme north of the valley. Almost all grape growing is done on lower hillsides, avoiding deeply fertile alluvial soils and cooler hilltop meso- climates. It is on these hillsides that Pinot noir uniqueness is found and where apparent families of wines urge distinctive American Viticultural Area identification. In 2002, a collaborative action of vineyards and wineries delineated and submitted to the TTB petitions to divide much of the northern part of the large Willamette Valley AVA into six more specific AVAs: Chehalem Mountains, Dundee Hills, Eo- la-Amity Hills, McMinnville, Ribbon Ridge, and Yamhill-Carlton. Chehalem Mountains AVA, established 2006 The Chehalem Mountains AVA is a single uplifted landmass southwest of Portland in the northern Willamette Valley, extending 20 miles in length and 5 miles in breadth, stretching from southeast to northwest. It includes several discrete spurs, mountains and ridges, such as Ribbon Ridge and Par- rett Mountain. The highest point within the Willamette Valley is the Chehalem Mountains’ Bald Peak (at 1,633 feet) which affects weather for the AVA and for adjoining grape growing hillsides.

DRY FARMED SOIL: WILAKENZIE (Sedimentary marine) AVERAGE VINE AGE: 18 YEARS Whistling Ridge Vineyard is located in the heart of Oregon’s Willamette Valley wine country, in the small Ribbon Ridge AVA. The vineyard was planted in 1990 to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris. As of 2016, there are 15 planted acres at Whistling Ridge. Soils are 100% marine sedimentary, very shallow, and have a low moisture holding capacity. The vineyard is named after the persistent evening breeze that arrives every afternoon. Influence of the wind, shallow soils, and aspect of the vineyard (the hilltop) combine to provide perfect conditions for producing Chardonnay. Aromatically powerful, offering an array of golden orchard fruit, floral scents, lemon curd, and mirabelle. The palate is plush, dense, and powerful, but possesses substantial juiciness and good structure to give length to the wine. Acids are mouthwatering, but well integrated. This wine has great range with food; all of the classic white fish, chicken, pork, & game such as rabbit or pheasant, and is a lovely match for rich cheeses. Drink between 2016-2022. Goodfellow Family Cellars is a small family winery focused on world-class wines from Oregon’s North- ern Willamette Valley. Sustainably farmed, non-irrigated, old vines provide us the opportunity to produce intense, site specific wines with an old world intensity and character. Fruit is farmed to accentuate the singular nature of our vineyard sites.
