Trisaetum Winery, Vineyards & Gallery James Frey Trisaetum Winery, Vineyards & Gallery 18401 Ribbon Ridge Road Newberg, OR 503-538-9898 www.trisaetum.com In 2003, Andrea and James Frey founded Trisaetum (tris-say-tum) in one of the few places where climate, soil, and entrepreneurial spirit combine to produce some of the world's best Pinot Noir & Riesling. Today, the family owned and operated winery in the heart of Oregon's Ribbon Ridge AVA produces small lots of acclaimed Pinot Noir and Riesling from its three estate vineyards in three different AVA’s. Trisaetum's first commercially available vintage was 2007. Trisaetum’s Coast range estate is a 22-acre vineyard within the foothills of the Coast Range mountains outside the town of McMinnville and is the site of our family home. The Coast Range vineyard marks the southwestern boundary of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. Trisaetum’s second estate is a 28-acre vineyard that surrounds the winery on Ribbon Ridge outside Newberg, Oregon. The third and smallest estate is an 8-acre old-vine vineyard in the Dundee Hills AVA named Wichmann Dundee. Each vintage, Trisaetum releases up to 10 different Pinot Noirs and 6-10 different Rieslings from winemaker/owner James Frey. In addition to his winemaking duties, James is also an accomplished artist with work sold and displayed throughout the world. His paintings and photography fill the 1,500-square-foot Trisaetum Gallery at the winery. James Frey Winemaker/Owner From his days growing up as a photographer in Santa Cruz to those running a large corporation, and now as a winemaker, general manager, and abstract expressionist artist, James Frey has always been a confusing mix of right- brain and left-brain. He has been creating art for more than two decades, and making wine for the past 13 years since first planting a vineyard in his backyard. He holds master degrees in both exercise physiology and business--- neither of which help much with painting or winemaking. Responsible for the day-to-day operations of Trisaetum, James is also in charge of crafting Trisaetum’s Pinot Noir and Riesling wines. Away from the winery, James creates the contemporary art that is showcased in the winery’s art gallery. Back to Geological Wine Tours page .

2018 coast range estate dry riesling trisaetum story In 2003, Andrea and James Frey founded Trisaetum in one of the few places where climate, soil, and entrepreneurial spirit combine to produce some of the world's best wines. Today, the family owned and operated winery in the heart of Oregon's Ribbon Ridge AVA produces small lots of acclaimed Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, and sparkling wine from its estate vineyards. winemaker’s notes This 2018 dry offering from our Coast Range Estate is textured with almost a chalky minerality with fresh, citrusy notes on the nose; the palate is strikingly concentrated and piquant, while the bright acidity is perfectly interwoven with the elegantly refined fruit, leading to a long, intense, very balanced finish. vintage & winemaking The 2018 vintage continues a streak of phenomenal vintages in the Willamette Valley. We harvested Riesling from our three estate vineyards over six different picking dates between September 28 to October 14, 2018. All Riesling was hand-picked, transported in small picking bins to the winery, chilled overnight, then hand-sorted before being gently pressed into its fermentation vessel. A mixture of oxidative and reductive pressings were employed. Fermentations lasted between 30-125 days in a temperature-controlled environment using a mixture of 70% neutral French oak casks, 20% French oak 12hL ovals, and 10% concrete eggs to produce over 76 individual fermentations. All ferments started with natural yeasts appellation: and spent 6 months in barrel on fine lees. Yamhill-Carlton AVA soil: estate vineyards Volcanic Jory Coast Range Estate (Yamhill-Carlton AVA) fermentation: This steep 53-acre site has 23 acres planted to vine and lies within the foothills of the Coast 76+ small lots were fermented in a mixture of Range Mountains marking the southwestern boundary of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA.

  • 2018 Estate Vineyard, Sauvignon Blanc Ribbon Ridge AVA
2018 Estate Vineyard, Sauvignon Blanc Ribbon Ridge AVA Location: Ribbon Ridge is a sub-appellation of the Willamette Valley AVA that sits 22 miles southwest of Portland, 4 miles northwest of Dundee and 40 miles east of the Pacific Ocean. Ribbon Ridge is contained within the larger Chehalem Mountains AVA - which is contained with the Willamette Valley AVA. The appellation became official in 2005. Climate: Protected by geographical features to the north, south and west, Ribbon Ridge's grape- growing hillsides are slightly warmer and drier when compared to the adjacent valley floors. Ribbon Ridge's moderate climate is well suited for early grape growth in the spring, consistent and even ripening over the summer and a long, full maturing season in the fall. Soils: The Ribbon Ridge region contains primarily sedimentary soils that are younger, finer and more uniform than the alluvial sedimentary and volcanic soils of neighboring regions. These moderately deep, well-drained silty-clay loam soils are part of the Willakenzie soil series and are of low fertility and ideal for growing high-quality wine grapes. Topography: Geographically, Ribbon Ridge is a 3.5-mile long by 1.75-mile wide ridge that extends from the Chehalem Mountains. The ridge rises 683 feet from the Chehalem Valley floor, giving it an island-like appearance. Site Characteristics: This is the only vineyard in Ribbon Ridge with plantings of Sauvignon Blanc. Granted, there are only around 30 vineyards in the AVA and there is little Sauvignon Blanc planted in the entire Willamette Valley, however the sandy marine soils and slightly cooler nature of this appellation are perfect growing conditions for Sauvignon Blanc.

2017 willamette valley chardonnay trisaetum story In 2003, Andrea and James Frey founded Trisaetum in one of the few places where climate, soil, and entrepreneurial spirit combine to produce some of the world's best wines. Today, the family owned and operated winery in the heart of Oregon's Ribbon Ridge AVA produces small lots of acclaimed Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling from its three estate vineyards. winemaker’s notes This Chardonnay is a blend of our Ribbon Ridge Estate and Coast Range Estate vineyards. The 2017 shows gorgeous aromatics of orange blossom, kumquat and fresh French baguette, with spicy notes of ginger and nutty toasted oak. Bright flavors of orchard fruits and citrus zest lead to toasted hazelnuts, sourdough bread, and vanilla cream. Firm acidity carries the fruit and mineral through on the lingering finish. vintage & winemaking 2017 proved to be another great vintage for Oregon. A later start to budbreak and bloom than in the previous year recalled more classic Oregon starts, while a long, dry growing season and warmer August allowed optimal fruit ripening. We harvested from our three estate vineyards over four different dates between September 13th on the Ribbon Ridge Estate; and concluded on October 16th when the last of our fruit from the Coast Range Estate made its way to the winery. All ferments started with natural yeasts and spent 11 appellation: months in barrel on fine lees. Willamette Valley AVA soil: estate vineyards Willakenzie, Bellpine, Sitton, Wellsdale, Dupee Coast Range Estate: 3 acres of Chardonnay are planted in a unique mix of volcanic and from marine sedimentary rock.

  • Judson Hale Winery Grows Pinot Noir
If you drink no Noir, you Pinot Noir Volume 9, Issue 29 September 5, 2013 Ten Year Vertical of Freeman Akiko’s Cuvée Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir The history of Freeman Vineyard & Winery had its origins in a happenstance meeting between Ken and Akiko. After college, Ken was a crew member aboard a yacht sailing to the Caribbean, but Hurricane Gloria forced the crew ashore in Larchmont, New York, close to Ken’s hometown. Ken decided to join a party in town thrown by a good friend where he met Akiko. She had only recently arrived from Japan, and as Japanese tradition would dictate, she was dressed formally in a Chanel dress, a striking contrast to the other revelers clothed in jeans and tee shirts. Ken was smitten and after introductory formalities, the two eagerly shared their passion for fine wine, especially Pinot Noir. She had grown up in Japan around wine as her father was a wine enthusiast who often shared special bottles with his family. The date of their meeting, September 28, 1985, is engraved on the keystone at the Freeman winery’s entrance. The Freemans launched their winery in 2001 after acquiring a small Russian River Valley winemaking facility and property in Sebastopol on a redwood-covered hillside. Beforehand, they had explored more than 300 vineyards looking to establish an estate program of their own and enlist grower partners. They preferred cool- climate wines, and in particular, wines crafted in an eloquent style that were quite approachable upon release, but had enough structure to allow extended development over the long term.

  • How Well Do American Viticultural Areas Correspond with the Soil Classes in Oregon's Northern Willamette Valley? a Question for the Wine Industry
AN ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS OF Douglas T. Wood for the degree of Master of Science in Geography presented on March 17, 2014. Title: How Well Do American Viticultural Areas Correspond with the Soil Classes in Oregon's Northern Willamette Valley? A Question for the Wine Industry Abstract approved: _____________________________________________ Laurence C. Becker The specific geography of individual wine growing regions has long been understood to be a significant factor in predicting both a region’s success in producing high quality grapes, and the resulting demand for wines produced from that region’s fruit. In the American wine industry, American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) are increasingly being used to designate a uniqueness and specificity of place. This process is often predicated on the argument that these areas represent a certain degree of physiographic uniformity or homogeneity. This is particularly the case with regard to the phenomenon of sub-AVAs, wherein smaller areas within large, spatially heterogeneous AVAs seek to differentiate themselves based on the physiographic features that are purportedly unique to those smaller subregions. In many cases, there is a strong correlation between soil classes and AVA boundaries, whereas in other cases the correlation is not as strong. This suggests that there are factors other than physiographic homogeneity contributing to the designation of these sub-AVAs. This study employs GIS and spatial analysis to examine and potentially correlate the soil classes of Oregon’s northern Willamette Valley with the sub-AVAs in that area. In doing so, this study presents maps and statistical results in order to provide a quantitative summary of the geographic context of vineyards in this region with respect to both the soil classes present and the federally designated AVA boundaries in which they are located.

  • AAWE Working Paper No. 151 – Economics
AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF WINE ECONOMISTS AAWE WORKING PAPER No. 151 Economics Classification and Re-Classification: Oregon’s Willamette Valley AVA and its New Sub-AVAs Omer Gokcekus and Clare M. Finnegan Feb 2014 www.wine-economics.org ISSN 2166-9112 Classification and re-classification: Oregon’s Willamette Valley AVA and its new sub-AVAs * Omer Gokcekus a and Clare M. Finnegan a Abstract: The creation of new, sub-AVAs within Oregon’s Willamette Valley AVA may indicate a desire on the part of well-established wineries to “split” or separate their social grouping from those with lesser qualifications. Once their social cluster has been differentiated, we theorize that these wineries would be able to capitalize on their newly developed distinctiveness and collect a larger regional reputation premium. Based on 2,221 Wine Spectator rated pinot noir wines between 1984 and 2008, regression analyses demonstrate that indeed regional reputation premiums have significantly increased with the creation of sub-AVAs; and that the price-quality ratio gap between sub-AVAs and the rest of Willamette has widened. (JEL Classification: C20, Q12, Q13, L66) Key Words: Wine, classification, terroir, AVA, regional reputation premium. * We would like to thank Karl Storchmann for providing the Wine Spectator data; and Huseyin Cakal, Neal Hulkower, Edward Tower and the participants of the Session 3: Regulating the Industry of the 7th Annual AAWE Conference in Stellenbosch, South Africa for their helpful comments and suggestions. a School of Diplomacy and International Relations, Seton Hall University, South Orange, 07079, USA.
