History of Bay Civil Engineering Projects Port of Baltimore The rise of Baltimore from a sleepy town trading in tobacco to a city rivaling Philadelphia, Boston, and New York began when Dr. John Stevenson, a prominent Baltimore physician and merchant, began shipping flour to Ireland. The success of this seemingly insignificant venture opened the eyes of many Baltimoreans to the City’s most extraordinary advantage– a port nestled alongside a vast wheat growing countryside, significantly closer to this rich farm land than Philadelphia. During the Revolutionary War, Baltimore contributed an essential ingredient for victory: naval superiority. By the 1770s, Baltimore had built the most maneuverable ships in the world. These ships penetrated British blockades and outran pirates, privateers, and the Royal British Navy. The agility and speed of these ships allowed Baltimore merchants to continue trading during the Revolutionary War, which in turn helped to win the war and to propel Baltimore’s growth from 564 houses in 1774 to 3,000 houses in the mid 1790s. This engraving of Baltimore was published in Paris and New York around 1834. Since 1752, Federal Hill has been the vantage point from which to view Baltimore. As Baltimore’s port grew, its trade routes were extended to the Ohio Valley. In 1806 the Federal Government authorized the building of the National Road from the Ohio River to Cumberland, Maryland. In turn, Baltimore businessmen built turnpike roads from Baltimore to Cumberland, effectively completing the Maryland portion of the National Road. The Road quickly became Baltimore’s economic lifeline to the fertile lands of the Ohio Valley. -

1997 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL The 1997 Sundance Film Festival continued to attract crowds, international attention and an appreciative group of alumni fi lmmakers. Many of the Premiere fi lmmakers were returning directors (Errol Morris, Tom DiCillo, Victor Nunez, Gregg Araki, Kevin Smith), whose earlier, sometimes unknown, work had received a warm reception at Sundance. The Piper-Heidsieck tribute to independent vision went to actor/director Tim Robbins, and a major retrospective of the works of German New-Wave giant Rainer Werner Fassbinder was staged, with many of his original actors fl own in for forums. It was a fi tting tribute to both Fassbinder and the Festival and the ways that American independent cinema was indeed becoming international. I PUBLIC REPORT SUMMARY During the last week of April, 1999 a team of archaeologists from Greenhorne and O'Mara, Inc. I conducted Phase I level archaeological excavations and an intensive search for burials at the proposed Fox Haven Development in the City of Alexandria, Virginia. The project area was a 2-acre lot located at 1820 North Howard Street within the City of Alexandria, Virginia. Oral informants had indicated that at I least three burials dating to the late 1920s to early 1930s were located within the project area. The goal of the project was the identification of archaeological resources that might be affected by the proposed development. -

More recently, new queer filmmakers have capitalized on increased (although by no means unproblematic) public acceptance to win critical recognition and commercial viability for their projects. The Hollywood Golden Era In the so-called Golden Era of Hollywood, there were a number of famous directors privately known for their alternative sexual preferences. These included George Cukor, Edmund Goulding, Mitchell Leisen, F.W. Murnau, Mauritz Stiller, James Whale, and Dorothy Arzner, who functioned with varying degrees of success in the industry. Cukor (1899-1983) is primarily famous as a prolific and assured director of women's films. His sexuality was a well known secret in Hollywood, and while it did not do substantial harm to his career, it is generally believed that his "fairy" reputation cost him the directorship of Gone With the Wind (1939), following objections from macho star Clark Gable. Although Cukor's work never overtly addresses gay issues, later critics and viewers have come to appreciate its many queer subtexts: Katharine Hepburn's cross dressing in Sylvia Scarlett (1935); the gloriously camp bitchiness in the dress and dialogue of the all women cast of The Women (1939); the effete figure of Kip in the classic Adam's Rib (1948). -

Robert C. Allen quoted an 1890s letter from the first burlesque star of the American stage, Lydia Thompson in Horrible Prettiness: Burlesque and American Culture (1991): “[B]urlesque as she knew it ‘has been retired for a time,’ its glories now ‘merely memories of the stage.’”1 In 1931, Bernard Sobel opined in Burleycue: An Underground History of Burlesque Days, “Alas! You will never get a chance to see one of the real burlesque shows again. They are gone forever…”2 In 1938, The Billboard published an editorial that began, “On every hand the cry is ‘Burlesque is dead.’”3 In fact, burlesque had been declared dead so often that editorials began popping up insisting it could be revived, as Joe Schoenfeld’s 1943 op-ed in Variety did: “[It] may be in a state of putrefaction, but it is a lusty and kicking decomposition.”4 It is this “lusty and kicking decomposition” which characterizes the published history of burlesque. Since its modern inception in the late nineteenth century, American burlesque has both been framed and framed itself within this narrative of degeneration. -
